Travel Camel...Ship of the Desert Delighted how your vision and courage to step out and embrace your passion of travel has borne fruit Shane...living the dream...once a hard slog...now cruising!!!
Wow! I'm full of admiration. The thought of standing up and speaking in front of so many people fills me with horror, don't know how you do it, but you obviously do it very well. Congratulations on your new career.
Power of the mind If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; If you can dream it, you can become it. William Arthur
The universe provides you opportunities and challenges. You've made choices that have allowed you to create, embrace and grow a new career. We are excited for you and eager to hear about all your present and future events. Evidentially storytelling is part of your soul. I can only imagine how many people who have stimulated, influenced and inspired to travel and blog. Wow. The Camel Travels.
The soul of a storyteller Thank you so much for your inspiring comment. I never thought storytelling was in my soul, but it is something that many others are noticing, so perhaps it has been laying dormant for years and is now awakening. I really look forward to seeing where my storytelling takes me in the near future.
love your blogs, mate congratulations on your success in Malaysia. I enjoy reading facts and you and I know how the media can distort those. I also wanted to say how brave you were in Somaliland. That must have been a scarey situation. cheers. Jan
Thanks for reading! Hello Jan, wonderful to hear from you! Malaysia was the first of three important speaking gigs - the next two were Germany and a Transatlantic cruise. I can assure you that they are far different experiences to those in Somaliland! All was fine in Somaliland, it was just one person who wanted to make life difficult for me.
Oh to be young again! Thanks for your posts, Shane. I'm so pleased that your love for travelling is turning into a career. At least I can enjoy vicariously.
How did the cruise go?
Making a career of travelling Thanks for the comment! Not sure I am really that young anymore, but this career change at my age is really satisfying. Not many people so dramatically change their profession at my stage in their working life. That transition is so close now and the next two blogs (one on my speech in Germany and the other on the series of speeches on the cruise ship) show how that transition is almost complete. As a teaser, the cruise went extremely well, and all the details will be in a blog appearing in the very near future.
That's what makes the difference... I met Shane many years ago here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when he was looking for SD cards for his camera. He gave me his card and website and I was able to see his photographs, but more important were is stories. So for years I had been reading his personal blogs and viewing his photos and now I finally realized what it was that made it so fascinating to read his stories. Because, that's what they are, stories, just like an old experienced master story teller, his blogs became real, drove me to read them (even at work!) and I couldn't stop.
To those who attended his talk on Flogging the Blog, trust me, every word is true and real as the blogs he writes.
What does the future hold - perhaps my business cards can predict? Hello Ronald, it is so lovely of you to leave a comment. The first time I entered Plaza Low Yat (it was in 2008 I suspect) we met, and since then I always come and say hi, even if I am not seeking to buy anything. When I saw you 2012 and earlier, I was a government investigator in Australia. Then when we met in 2013, I was an aimless traveller - and you were the first person to receive my new business card printed in Kuala Lumpur that said "Travel Blogger" even though I was only travelling, I needed some description on my card, so that title was chosen. It so happened that this was a predictor of what was to come; for when we met in early 2014 I had almost achieved that transition to a full time travel blogger. Now my business card says "Adventurer, Blogger, Speaker" and since having that card printed a few months ago, the speaking side of my career has strengthened considerably - thus again, the title on those business cards has been fully realised. Who knows what job description the next printing of my card will contain. Already I'm receiving strong indications that 2015 will be an incredible year with even more opportunities on offer. Ronald, thanks for being with me on this journey.
The Polly Diaries meets Ibn Battuta There I was thinking you had received your fame from my blog "Mischief on the Mekong Part 3...Kidnapped & Extorted...The Polly Diaries"...the Shane Dallas Story. Wonderful to think it has carried you in the footsteps of Ibn Battuta, “Travelling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller”. Really pleased you are living your dream Shane...someone's gotta do it...and really pleased it's YOU.
The Polly Diaries The kidnapping of Polly was a seminal moment, for it again demonstrated to me the importance of a great story. A blog is a story that carries the readers on a journey similar to the journey that the blogger has undertaken. That is what I seek to do in my presentations as well.
Shane, you make us proud! You've outgrown TB now that your rich and famous...well, famous at least. Congratulations, and best wishes as your career blossoms. We look forward to your report about the Germany conference.
A new career Definitely not rich and still not famous. Even if I make neither, it doesn't matter - the past nine months in particular have been incredible and I'm throughly enjoying this journey. I hope I never outgrow Travelblog, for without this site, none of my achievements would have occurred. .
The power of music It is amazing what 800 hours of practice can do for a group. At some pointed they became a team. Loved this story and hope to follow in your footsteps one day to see all of this.
An essential visit... ...for anyone remotely interested in The Beatles. Strongly recommend going on The Beatles Extravaganza Day Tour with Pool of Life Tours - well worth the extra money compared to the usual half day tour offered by most other providers.
Passionate about travelling and discovering the world, especially destinations that many consider to be dangerous. Based in Nairobi but travelling for lots of the year.
