Something about spaghetti

Published: August 18th 2012Europe » Italy » Umbria » Castiglione del Lago

Although we are enjoying looking at all the sights as we travel, people are the most important thing. We loved spending the week in Rhodes with family and today we spent the day with friends. It is a little ridiculous that we had to come to Italy to meet them as they only live in New Zealand, but the coincidence of being so close on another continent couldn't be passed by. Regan and David had been in the youth group Fiona ran in Balclutha in the late 90's. She had attended their wedding shortly after we had moved to Australia and hadn't seen them since. Facebook had kept us in touch and we had realised we were all travelling for three months and our paths crossed this week. They were staying in Tuscany and a half ... read more

A smashing day

Harriet has been known to be a bit of a hypochondriac. In the past she has suffered from all sorts of illnesses, including a short bout of leukaemia. When she told Fiona and Toby that her foot was broken, they therefore assumed that she was stretching the truth a little bit and perhaps she was just sore from all the walking we have been doing. Eventually the moaning became too much and we investigated further, only to discover that her shoes were too small and she has bruised her toe. The designer outlets didn't really have anything that would be suitable but we had heard of another outlet place that had high street shops as well as Nike, Adidas etc. so that was where we headed this morning. The mall is supposed to be set out ... read more

Gruesome Saints and Scary cable cars

Published: August 18th 2012Europe » Italy » Umbria » Gubbio

There aren't many places in the world where you get to see a 900 year old body that hasn't decayed and if we had known that was what we would see today we may not have gone- it's a bit freaky. Gubbio is yet another amazingly pretty little medieval hill town in Umbria and the only reason it got on our radar for a visit was the funicular described as the nearest thing to a theme park ride in Umbria. After sleepy towns and a slow pace, we thought this would be a good contrast. We arrived at the best time of day- gelateria opening time. We were the first customers, but we didn't get anything special to mark the occasion, just the usual 3 Coppa piccola. We sat outside to eat them and contemplated the ... read more

Prada, Gucci, Armani, Dolce and Gabana

We had intended to go to Florence today, but we tried to buy tickets online for the museums and discovered that we can only get them for next week. We would rather have tickets than queue so we changed our plans. We still headed near to Florence but instead of art today we looked at clothes. Even top designers have goods that are slightly imperfect and in Italy the factory outlet stores are designer brands. We went to two malls today and had a very different experience that outlet shopping at DFS in Melbourne. The first place we visited was the Prada outlet. It was set out like a normal shop, was bright, clean and organised and the cheapest things still cost more than the most expensive in Moorabin. If you were going to buy Prada bags ... read more

Marvellous Montone

Published: August 17th 2012Europe » Italy » Umbria » Montone

Today was truly a holiday. We got up late and walked into Montone. We discovered the bakers where we bought fresh bread for lunch and then wandered on into and around the village. The village is very small, but is divided into 3 regions or quarters, each with their own church. There are several restaurants and of course the cafe on the piazza. We had a lunch time drink at the cafe and Harriet and Toby tested out the gelato. It may not have been the best quality but it gained points for location. We went into one of the churches and once more we were blown away by the art in every church. Above the altar was a hole in the ceiling which let light flood in over a dove symbolising the Holy Spirit. It ... read more

I see, I see , Assisi

When Toby and Fiona visited Umbria a couple of years ago, Toby decided that Assisi was his favourite place and so he was looking forward to going back again today. We detoured on the way through Santa Maria Degli Angeli which is where St Francis actually died. The spot is inside a church which is a beautiful building in its own right and which has a fantastic feeling of God's presence. We tried to enter the church, but just like yesterday we were stopped because our shoulders were bare- well Fiona's were and made to cover up with a scarf. At least they had scarves here for you to wear. Harriet is incensed and keeps letting everyone know this is a Christian church not muslim. Nevertheless, once we has finished looking we bought scarves from a local ... read more

What's the time Mr Wolf?

Published: August 13th 2012Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia

Toby returned from his morning run almost bursting over with the news he wanted to share. He had been chatting at the pool with James, the villa owners son, who had informed him that a wolf had been to visit last night. His mother had caught it eyeing up the ducks. A shout was enough to see it off. When asked how big it was, he told Toby that mum said it was big enough. A trip to Perugia seemed a good idea away from the forests where a wolf could hide. We programmed the GPS to take us to a car park that the guide book recommended, but it was a little scary getting there. The route was partly through the walled town and involved very small roads and tight turns as well as one ... read more

Life is Beautiful

Published: August 13th 2012Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Arezzo

After such along day yesterday due to the early start, late bed and an extra hour from crossing a time zone, we were up late. There was food for breakfast in our welcome pack, which was just as well because Italian shops don't open on Sundays. We had read in the local information that Arezzo had a Sunday antiques market and it seemed like a good a place as any to spend the day. Toby and Fiona didn't go there last time they were in Italy so it was fun to visit a new place. As with most Tuscan/ Umbrian towns, Arezzo has steep streets that lead to the main piazza which is surrounded by important civil buildings. Each of the streets was filled with market stalls and we spent time looking at them all. We ... read more

Go the Chiefs!

Published: August 12th 2012Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens

Why are all our flights at such stupid times? Once more we were up before dawn to get a flight, this time from Rhodes to Athens. We left too early to wake the rest of the family up and watched the sun rise as we drove up the east coast of Rhodes. When we checked in we realised that the plane was going on to Rome. We were booked on an afternoon flight to Rome and so we asked if we could fly straight through. It wasn't to be but they did take our luggage the whole way through and we didn't have to pick it up again in Athens. It did mean we still had a whole day in Athens. Harriet wasn't keen on going back because of the scare on the last night we ... read more

 A tale of two beaches

Published: August 12th 2012Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Rhodes

Today was our last day in Rhodes and so for the first time we all went out for the day together- including John. We headed down to the very southern most point of the island to a place called Prasonisi which has 2 beaches at the same place. The seas from each side of the island meet here with a sand spit in between. We chose the right hand beach to start with as it had waves and looked more fun to play in. Toby and Harriet were very happy with the choice but Jonathan was affected by the salt in the water and started to itch all over. He even came up in a rash. Volleyball on the beach was a better option for him. This was the first beach we had been to which ... read more
