The Kiwi Travellers

Mel and Boyce

We are a couple from New Zealand itching to see the world, we love adventure and the outdoors. Having only ever ventured as far as Australia, the time has come to begin to explore the four corners of the earth.

We are interested in exploring one country or area at a time, as we really want to dedicate a significant amount of time to immerse ourselves in the culture and the 'way of life' of each region.

We are beginning our overseas travels with a month long adventure through Thailand in February/March 2013.

After breakfast at Pong Phen guesthouse we sadly left and headed to the bus station. Our journey to our next destination wasn't going to be straight forward. We caught the 9:30am rickety old bus out of Kanchanaburi, a 2 hour ride costing 50B each which took us half way to Suphanburi. We then had to get a connecting minivan at Suphanburi to take us the rest of the way, 80B each, which had air con and was more comfortable. We were pleased with the upgrade!! It was 2:30pm by the time we got to Ayutthaya. We found our accomodation "Tony's Place" easily, just a stones throw from where we got dropped off. It was late in the day once we booked in, so we knew we were pushed for time to go into the historical park. ... read more

Day One After breakfast we made our way to the bus station to leave the crazy capital behind. We knew our Lonely Planet bible would now be our go to, for all of our decision making from now on. We had a 2 hour bus trip to Kanchanaburi ahead of us and we were just taking it as it comes. On buying our bus tickets we got some accomodation and tourist pamphlets and Pong Phen Guesthouse kept popping up so we decided to check it out - and it had a pool!! Bonus!! We got the last room at the guesthouse, we were very pleased with our decision, we didn't know it yet but we were about to make some great friends here. We soon found we had a wee gecko friend in our room. I ... read more

Well the time had finally come to say farewell and begin our adventure of a life time in Thailand -"the land of smiles". I was excited, nervous and anxious about our trip abroad. I knew it was going to be a culture shock -and boy was I right. After what seemed an eternity we finally landed in Bangkok, it was a 14 hour flight from NZ with a short stopover in Sydney. Getting through immigration was a piece of cake, and I couldn't believe we were finally here. I imagined armed guards and sniffer dogs greeting us off the plane - but there were none in sight. It took 5 minutes to get our passport visa stamped, grabbed our luggage and headed through the exit. Couldn't believe there wasn't even a baggage check!! We met our ... read more
