Sadly, and yet with contentment and a sense of accomplishment, we're on the final stretch! Nevertheless, we thought we'd share our final musings of our journey through Belize and Mexico, and then homeward bound via Texas, London and Croatia. From Guatemala, we set off on a shorter yet adventure filled bus ride to the town of San Ignacio (known locally as Cayo) in Belize. On entering Belize, the immigration officer picked up our passports to stamp them, noted our home country on the cover, set them back down on the counter and turned up his little stereo system playing behind his desk. He said to us, "You know who this is?". By this stage we had wizened up, since we had heard this voice all over Central America wherever reggae was loved - "Lucky Dube!" we ... read more

We recently received some action shots of our white river rafting adventure on the Pascua section of the Reventazon river in Costa Rica (see our blog entry on the 18th of July). Seeing these photographs again reminded us just how much fun we had! ... read more

This one is a bit of fun for anyone who enjoys an ice cold beer. The following beer journal was compiled during our trip to Brazil, Central America and Mexico. All scores are rated from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest) and are, of course, purely subjective. Naturally, there is really no such thing as a 10 allowing the quest for the perfect beer to continue. Enjoy and salute! ... read more

Hi Chicos and welcome to another update by David - this time the focus will be on our time spent in Guatemala. Our first destination in Guatemala was the town of Livingston, a wonderful quaint port town situated on the mouth of the Rio Dulce River at the gulf of Honduras. Our journey commenced with a sense of urgency as soon as we disembarked from the ferry (from Roatan) at La Ceiba in Honduras - we had a long day ahead of us and the chances of making it to Livingston in one day were slim so we pretended we were contestants in "The Amazing Race" determined to beat all other gringos on our same route. Our starting move was to dive into the first clapped out 'collectivo' taxi (shared with strangers) we saw and get ... read more

Hola Everyone! David here. Time is really flying but our travels remain full of fun, challenges and many amazing experiences, and despite some growing home sickness and missing our families and friends, we're both in good shape. In this instalment of our travel blog I'll provide a taste of our adventures to, and on, both the Corn and the Bay Islands. I'll start with the Corn Islands ( Las Islas del Maíz) which are essentially two very small islands (Big Corn & Little Corn) 70km off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, originally used as a safe haven for pirates when they still plundered the Caribbean. The Corns as they are referred to have some what of a mystique amongst travellers and are certainly not as well known or travelled as most of the other Central American ... read more

Hola amigos. It's been a while. David and I are currently in Belize- it has been great for us to reflect back on the last five weeks of travel and for us to finally share that with you. Our last blog entry left off at the point of crossing the border from Costa Rica into Nicaragua. On entering this rough and ready country, bursting with beauty and potential after its fairly recent emergence from civil war, we immediately noticed the contrast with its much more polished neighbour to the south. One of the first striking features of 'Nica' are the taxi drivers! They are so game for business that they are willing to drive their clapped out 1984 Hyandai Accents wherever and whenever needed regardless of how much luggage you may have (and between four of ... read more

Hi everyone, it's Liesel here. Your comments and messages have been such fun to read - thank you!! We have definitely lulled into tropical time - the days all blurring into each other, helped along by the soft steady rhythm of the ocean. We spent three weeks in Costa Rica - a beautiful country known for its lush, green vegetation and cloud forests, eco-tourism, volcanoes and beaches. The local greeting "Pura Vida" literally translates as 'Pure Life'. We flew from Sao Paulo via Lima to San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica, on the 19th June. Despite some mild anxiety that the airline we were flying on had crashed a month previously in Honduras, everything went pretty smoothly. We did have a bit of a bag drama as we found out that my backpack had ... read more

Hi everyone, David here (actually writing from Hotel Brio in a tiny village called Gigante on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua). As expected, time is flying and we're having a lot of fun but as a result we're a little behind on our updates. It is currently raining outside (a blessing as the last couple of days have been seriously hot and humid) and Liesel and I are taking advantage to update our blog. As the title of this entry states, I'm going to share some of the more memorable action-type adventures we've undertaken on our journey so far. The 30th of June 2008 was a great day for two main reasons. Firstly, I had finally made a full recovery from a nasty bug I'd caught earlier somewhere between leaving Brazil and arriving in San Jose, ... read more

Our travel day to Rio was a rainy one (we've been so lucky with the weather!) and so donned in our ponchos we caught the ferry from Ilha Grande back to Angra dos Reis. We chose to travel via 'Fast Connection' to Rio - which was basically a mini-van jammed to the rafters with people and luggage not too dissimilar from our very own taxis back home. However, our taxi had the added luxury of an on-board TV screen. The driver slotted in his favourite DVD (of an overweight, sweaty guy singing in Portuguese who looked like he was about to drop dead from a heart attack any second), pumped up the volume, and we were off. After a couple of hours, we sidled into Rio at the mercy of our increasingly erratic driver, and were ... read more

It's Liesel here - David has left me with a rather tough act to follow. Here goes.... After Praia de Sono we couldn't imagine finding a more spectacular beach, but Brazil is full of wonderful surprises, and the next day we stumbled upon Trindade - a rustic collection of 4 different beaches - the 4th being the most unspoilt of all, and also only reachable via a jungle trail. For me, this beach was particularly special, because despite its natural beauty, I also found to my utter delight, a perfect pansy shell tucked into the sand. For any of you who have ever spent time with me on a beach, I just love collecting shells, and my dream since forever has been to find a pansy shell, so I was truly excited by this little discovery! ... read more
