In the course of this class I discovered that my sustainability ethic is closely related to my personal path of spirituality with the Bahá'í Faith. Sustainability is very much tied to the idea of anthropogenic global warming that is a scientific issue not a political issue. If as a Bahá'í I believe in the harmony of science and religion it is my duty to listen to the warnings of scientists and do my part to ensure the advancement of humanity. Humanity cannot advance if people are dying from natural disasters and other issues related to the environment. We also know that [View Full Entry]

Maryville College and rain. Can we make these work in conjunction to provide Maryville College with a cheaper, more sustainable means of watering our various athletic fields and small gardens cultivated by our incredible grounds crew. My group is investigating the feasibility of a gray water run off system serving as a means of watering the aforementioned areas. At this point, my research shows that for personal homes it can at times be unfeasible to install too big of a water tank to hold the saved water. However, in the case of Maryville College and the surface area that is irrigated [View Full Entry]

My group consisting of Daniel Rule, Rebecca Jones, and myself decided that we would work on rain-water cisterns to help supplement Maryville College's water needs. Rain-water cisterns basically function as large water reservoirs to hold the rain-water runoff from various buildings on campus. The first problem I've run into in my research is preliminary evidence that says Eastern Tennessee is really prone to droughts which could possibly cut into the cost efficiency of such a system. The next entry will delve into the initial costs of such a system. [View Full Entry]

Well, I've been in Argentina for three months and I'm starting to feel very comfortable in my new crib. This edition of the blog will deal with making "native" friends. (there has got to be a better term) Fortunately, before I arrived I already had an Ecuadorian friend who lives here in Córdoba. Through this friend i soon made many non-English speaking Córdoban friends. Luckily, it was through these friends that I originally discovered the Argentine tendency for males to also take part in the latin kissing of the cheeks. I've always been much more personal than the average more formal, [View Full Entry]

To quote a favorite rap song........"Well, this is a story that must be told." I must preface this story by saying you may find this hard to believe, but I really did not get too angry during this entire process. It is ridiculous and almost far-fetched, but this is what exactly what to happened to me last week. If anything I am going to censor parts of this story!!! Let me state a random fact now that will make sense towards the end of this entry. The magnetic strip on my bank card was damaged (somehow) so I don't have any [View Full Entry]
