This is going to be a short entry, because I'm quite a bit behind in my blog and there's just so many things I'm seeing here, so I'll let the pictures speak for the most part. After arriving on the South Island, I drove straight to Kaikoura. Quite a nice and small town. I wanted to do whale watching there, but I found out that the whales that ususally hang out there had left area to meet the females and mate far our in the open sea... So instead, I booked a tour to watch Albatross, the biggest birds on the planet, with a wingspan of up to 3.6 metres! Near Kaikoura are also a lot of furry seals relaxing on the rocks or playing in the water. I hope I can do the whale watching ... read more

Wellington is New Zealand's capital and lies on the southern tip of the Northern Island. It's quite a pretty and pleasant city and not too big with just less than 400,000 inhabitants. The weather was very nice on the day I explored the city and I took Wellington's signature cable car up the hill to the Kelburn suburb and the botanical gardens. From the top, you have excellent views of the city. The botanical gardens run all the way back down the hill into the city. A pleasant walk back amongst the gardens and a picturesque graveyard of the first settlers of Wellington overlooking the city. As I walked back into the city, I walked past New Zealand's Parliament building, the "Beehive", named after its shape. Via Wellington's main shopping street and the harbour, I ended ... read more

After the stunning Tongariro Crossing, I wanted to go to Mount Taranaki, another volcano. I drove there via a beautiful route through the North Island's countryside and coastline. Although we all know New Zealand by the high number of sheep, there are quite a lot of cows to be found here, too! After a few hours of driving, I arrived in New Plymouth, the biggest city of the region. From there, Mount Taranaki became visible. Still slightly covered in clouds, I could not make up its true shape yet. But I was driving along the south-west coast of the North Island, which runs around the mountain, so I was going to see it from pretty much every angle. As it got later in the day, I got to see more and more of the mountain, and ... read more

(above is a panorama photo with me in it, on the right, taken by Kevin Hutchens) Tongariro National Park is an amazing volcanic landscape in summer and a ski destination in winter. It has three major peaks, Tongariro (1967m), Ngauruhoe (2287m) and Ruapehu (2797). The area is featured as the land of "Mordor" in the Lord Of The Rings Movies where the Ngauruhoe peak stars as "Mount Doom". There are some incredible walks around this area, most notably the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a 19km track through volcanic craters with sidetracks to the peaks of Mount Doom (as everyone calls it these days) and Tongariro (an extra 3km). I was staying in a city north of the park, Taupo, where I met up with an American guy, Kevin, whom I met once earlier in Australia but hadn't ... read more

From Sydney, it's a 3-hour flight to Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, though not the capital, which is Wellington. New Zealand is approximately the other side of the world from the Netherlands; I can't get any further from home! New Zealand consists of two big islands, the North Island and the South Island. Auckland is in the North Island and I start and finish my trip there before flying to the Cook Islands. I have about 4 weeks in New Zealand. I didn't spend a lot of time in Auckland. Basically, it was a morning walk through the city and chilling out in a couple of parks, besides finding a car rental company to hire a car from. I'll come back to Auckland at the end of my trip and see some more of the city. ... read more

Before visiting yet another great country (New Zealand), I had a couple of more days to spend in Sydney. I planned it that way, because the weather was not so good when I was in Sydney the first time, so I thought that I'd save some of the sights until the end of my Australia trip, hoping for better weather. The weather was better, luckily! Last year, I met a Canadian girl via couchsurfing, who stayed at my place for a few days in The Hague on her trip in Europe. She was travelling again now, but this time in New Zealand and Australia, just like me. She's doing work as a nanny in Sydney now, so we met up for an afternoon in Manly and did a beautiful coastal walk of 3 hours. I had ... read more

Port Douglas is a picturesque little town with a beautiful "four-mile" beach. I was going to stay here 5 days to chill out a little bit and do some diving. The first day was all about doing nothing. Wonderful! The second day was good as well: I booked a 3-dive trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I went out with a boat called "Poseidon" and luckily, the weather was good this time. We went to the outer Great Barrier Reef and the coral was just amazing there! I also saw a green turtle and a grey reef shark. Pretty cool. Great Barrier Reef, another place off my "places to visit" checklist! :-) I also booked a one day tour with a four-wheel drive around Daintree National Park. The park is mostly covered by rain forest that ... read more

I received the sad news 2 days ago that Aghy, my Indonesian friend and brother of my former girfriend Nita, suddenly passed away. Shocking to hear. Just a few weeks ago, Aghy showed me around Jakarta. My thoughts are with Nita and her family who are going through the most difficult time now. Before all this happened, but after the adventure of sailing the Whitsundays, I was heading for Townsville. On the way to Townsville I passed the Inkerman hill. It's just a regular hill, but it has a lookout with amazing views of the surrounding Aussie land. On my way, I also encountered a strange looking chicken-like bird, who was trying to threaten me by flapping his wings a bit. It didn't work, so he left; smart choice :-) Much of the scenery along the ... read more

The Whitsundays where named by, who else, Captain James Cook, who came here in 1770 on -you guessed it- Whitsunday. The best way to explore this area is by booking a sailing trip for a couple of days. I booked myself for 3 days and 3 nights on the Whitsunday Magic, a beautiful schooner with three masts. It turned out to be 3 great days with fantastic food on board, wonderful weather and a cocktail or two. One day was reserved for diving, doing 2 dives on the Great Barrier Reef. I saw a big and locally famous "Napoleon Maori Wrasse" (picture here) whom the locals call "Elvis". This big fish is used to humans and is a curious one as well. He swims right up to you and loves to be petted. Amazing! If you ... read more

I left Brisbane behind and drove north via the "Steve Irwin Road", named after the famous wildlife expert who hosted the tv show "The Crocodile Hunter". Unfortunately, his love for animals also became his end, as he was fatally stung in the chest by a stingray, while filming on the Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas (where I am right now as I'm writing this). I drove on to Noosa, one of Australias hippest beach town, and a pretty one! I met up with a German friend whom I met in Laos in 2005 and again in Bangkok on that same trip. She had moved to Australia a few years ago, and visited me in The Hague for a day, because it was closer to an Australian Embassy for her than elsewhere. So now it was ... read more
