So far I have found the people of Nicaragua to be extremely friendly and helpful. Everywhere I go they are helping me out-- and giving me rides. Whenever I find myself questioning my mode of transportation, a ride comes along. It was a really long ride getting to El Salvador from Gracias, and I think one of my favorites. I caught the first bus leaving Gracias at 5 in the morning and I spent all day riding along bumpy dirt roads through the countryside. It was spectacular as the sun was rising and the rays were shining through the trees and highlighting the tops of the mountains. I put up the pictures from my stay here first and now for some reason I´m not in the mood to write much. So I´ll see what I can do... I think the fotos tell more anyway. I had a great 3 nights in Gracias. It´s a charming little town up in the mountains and life there is very simple. Most people are living off the land and there is not much else for work, so this region was also very poor. After Utila I spent a few days in Copan. I met two other girls at the bus station who were going there as well so we all traveled together and then one of the girls met up with her boyfriend. I stayed with Renate, from Sweden, and we cooked together and hung out and she was good company for a few days. I realized it was the first time I had traveled with a girl (not that it really matters) but it was nice. We had a lot of interests in common and she told me a lot about Scandanavia. I rode my last chicken bus through Guatemala and it was a long and crazy one. Tons of people, mostly little kids, were trying to sell things, and in front of me on the bus was a woman with a chicken in a woven basket and another woman with a basket of sandwiches on her head. Next to me was an old man who kept asking me to take him to the US with me and he was giving me funny looks, and then there was another guy selling porn mags and talking to me really fast. Hey everyone, I have not used the internet much recently because right now I'm in Belize and it's really expensive so I have been avoiding the computer, but I decided I needed to try and catch up a little since my last blog left me in limbo. Colin and I spent the last week in Antigua, which is a very nice old city with cobblestone streets and ruins on about every corner. The one drawback is that there are a lot of tourists here and prices on food and lodging are a bit higher. The highlights though of our time here were in the last two days (pictures are on their way a little later)... On Friday afternoon we hiked up Volcan Pacaya, which is one of the few active volcanoes around here. You have to take a tour to do the hike because it is not safe [View Full Entry]
