This is an area where I will share my smiles and tears of my travels over in South Korea. Life is very different here and I hope you are enlightened about another culture while reading my blog.

This weekend was much more relaxing then the past weekend. Saturday Jessica and I decided to hike up Mt Gubongsan. The mountain was out in a suburb area of Daejeon. This meant that we had to venture on to the bus for the first time ever. We were very unsure of what to do or how to pay but thankfully it was very easy. The bus driver also helped us with where we had to get off in order to get to the mountain. It is a gorgeous hike. You are right in the trees and it is not as commercialized as other mountains I have seen. There are different routes up so you have your choice of using the stairs to hike it up on the man-made trails and rocky sides. That is the way ... read more
Words cannot explain how excited I was for Busan and I was not surprised to find out how excited Jess was as well. The trip started with my alarm clock waking me up at 4:30am....that is so early. I had the hardest time getting up, but with the excitement of the upcoming trip I got up without pressing snooze. I did my last minute packing I had left and then started on my journey to the subway station. I had to sit and wait for the first subway to come while watching all the guys who were still drunk from the night before. I met Jess at the Daejeon Station and we picked up our tickets that we had previously bought on the interent. At 6:20am our train arrived and we boarded. The plan was to ... read more
BUSAN IN T-MINUS 2 DAYS!! I am so excited.....words cannot even describe it! I am not sure what I am more excited for, leaving the city for 3 days or just having a break from work? We are able to go because it is Cheusok here which is the equivalent to our Thanksgiving. That does make me a tad bit homesick but I was able to talk to my brother on skype last night and that made me very happy! As well my family is coming in Dec!! Work here is so exhausting because little kids are so tiresome. I adore each and every one of them but they tire me out! I am now a huge fan of afternoon naps : ) Today was another great day at work. The students wanted to know about ... read more
Now that I have hit my two month mark things seem to be going more smoothly. At the school I have established a routine with each of my classes and with them knowing what to expect and what I expect in turn really helps. I also have a handful of games and activities that I can recycle depending on the topic. I have also made it through evaluation month, now just to make it through open class month. I have been asked by numerous people what kind of glorious adventures have I been up to and the sad part is nothing comes to mind. My weekends are usually spent with two others and we may do some exploring followed by Hanguel class and maybe grocery shopping. Life is not as glamorous as some may think. I ... read more
Bomunsan Mountain What a breathtaking hike this was both literally and figuratively. It seemed like a good way to pass a Sunday with a couple of friends not expecting to find all the hidden treasures that we did. To start off the hike we were lucky enough to find a temple with a large variety of Buddha sculptures each with their own unique touches. You could feel the peace and serenity being in the area and it was a welcoming break from the city life where everything from eating to crossing the street is a race. After taking in all the temple had to offer we then made our way up the trail to the bottom of the mountain. As soon as you emerge into the trees you get the fresh smell of nature and the ... read more
''A journey a thousand miles starts with one step.'' This is a quote that I have always held close to my heart, however, I never thought that I would put it into practice. I have always had those thoughts of what else is really out there and here I am living in another country. This is just a stepping stone to a new beginning in my life. It has opened my eyes to many things and how different yet similar we all are. We are all people with morals, values, thoughts and believes. It is our language differences that create a barrier for us to fully communicate, but this is a hurdle that can be overcome. Speaking to someone in their mother tongue gains you a lot of respect as you are trying. I feel blessed ... read more
Traditional Market Recently I was lucky enough to venture through a traditional market here in Daejeon. It was actually by a mere mistake that my mate Jessica and I found this treasure within the city. We were on our way to the famous Zooland that we have heard so much about, however, as usual we got a tad bit lost. I think our inner campus has dimmed as we can never find where we want to go in an efficient way. If anything I feel this is a great gift because we are able to find places such as this. Off of the main street there were numerous people sitting on the sidewalk or with wagons selling their fresh goods. The fruit here is absolutely incredible. Everything is so fresh as if it was just ... read more
I haven’t written in awhile as I have been so busy, but I found some time to sit down and write a blog entry. I have been here for about 6 weeks now and am finally settling down. It is starting to feel more comfortable as I am developing a routine. For my own sanity I need to have a weekly routine over here in Daejeon. I have started getting back into running and a normal sleeping pattern. Work is exhausting however. Teaching English to kindergarten is not an easy task. There is so much prep work involved because you need to be well prepared for every class. If you have any time left over or you are unsure of what to do, the kids go wild since controlling children that only know limited English is ... read more
Hi all! Update time. I am doing just fine even though I did get very sick. I knew that I would get attacked by the foreign germs but I did not know how sick I would get. I had to go visit a clinic here in the neighbourhood and get some medication. I was also severely dehydrated. The doctor’s office here is very odd; you literally go into his office and sit at a chair by his desk. The way they check you out is much different as well and they are obsessed with checking your blood pressure. The doctor prescribed me 5 pills and 3 liquid medications that I had to take 3 times a day and you only get enough for 3 days. I thought that was a little excessive; however I am now ... read more
I figured that I would write another blog entry. I am trying to think of what has happened in this past week that was out of the ordinary and so different. Work was the same as per usual, except for the fact that I got sick. I should have known that would happen. There are germs here that are not in Canada and plus many of the kids are sick as well. I just coughed and had a stuffy nose with the rest of my students so it all worked out in the end. The kids are getting used to my teaching style now, however, they are also learning how to ‘annoy’ Chantelle teacher. Typical children! I still look forward to going to school and seeing them though. I did finally get my medical done at ... read more
