Horse riding games rock! - From: Let's Go....Let's Show....Let's Rodeo
Nnice short and sharp post on rodeo. It sounds soo cool! That "Ouch" photo is awesome, and i think well sums up the whole deal. Ive never seen a rodeo before, but i can only imagine it being nuts. Ive just finished living in Kyrgyzstan for 6 months and i saw some pretty whack horse riding games there. The Kyrgyz are a nomadic ppl whose lives revolve around horses, much like your cowboys. I truly believe you and Kel will love it! http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/blog-445174.html

Sirop d'érable! - From: If Underwear Were Food, Then Long Underwear Would Be Manna From Heaven
I have to laugh at your Cabane à Sucre experience...I think I know which cabane he sent you to. Not the one I would've recommended because, yeah, well, cafeteria food. And I have to clarify that it is Quebecois, not Canadian, because I have yet to meet a westerner (from Alberta, BC, etc) who puts syrup on their eggs or in their pea soup. :) Glad you had fun in Québec!

Hook Turn!! - From: Ocean and City: The Trip to Melbourne
Love your comment about the "WILD" right turns in downtown Melbourne! My mum's family is mainly from the Melbourne area, so I've done my fair share of driving and performed a number of "hook turns", as they're referred to, in Melbourne.

Well Done, Indeed! - From: Taking a Leap in Queenstown
Again, apologies for my belated comments....Alas, well done on the jump. Although I jumped in town, we did have the opportunity to visit the Kuwara site.....watched a few jumpers there and then took one of those INSANE jet boat rides. They literally drive you within feet (possibly inches - I think I got a haircut from one particular boulder) of the cliffs. As with the bungy jump, glad I did it, but never again!

Ok, so I didn't take the time to read much of your travel blog during your trip. That being said, I'm making up for it tonight. Love the pic of luging!! That was a blast for me back in '02. Don't know if it's still there, but I bungy jumped from the observation deck/restaurant area at the top.

Hi Team Turner! I've just spent the past month reading your round-the-world-trip blog from start to finish, and I have to say that I'm so sad that it's over! You guys are great photographers as well as writers...I feel like I know you both (in a non-creepy, non-stalkerish way, that is!). I have a crazy passion for travel as well...and I'm getting ready to leave on a 10 day trip to Germany in a couple of weeks. However, 10 days seems like a flash in the pan compared to what you have done. I have to admit I'm just a bit envious!! Please keep documenting your trips so that I can live vicariously through you guys! Happy Travels! Kathy in GA

Incredible! - From: The Pictures Speak For Themselves
Hi Guys, I have a lot of friends travelling and keep updated with their Travels on this site, and every so often a story or photo will grab my attention as yours did...I live in South Africa and just wanted to say you took some spectacular shots of our wildlife, the pictures are INCREDIBLE... I myself have spent more than a few days in the bush and not seen so much activity or as many animals, and friends' trips definately do not yield as many spectacular pics...I was just hoping to give you & your friends a sense of how fortunate you were, and I'm glad you had such an amazing experience here in light of your hesitancy to come in the first place. And thanks for sharing these pics.

Enjoyed the reminder of the salt mine - From: Salt Mines in Berchtesgaden
I went to the salt mines 20 years ago as a young soldier stationed in Germany. It was fairly cheesy then too, but we also had to wear a supposidly traditional miners hat too. It looked like a black Fez, but without the tassle. It made the photos taken there that much more cheesy. I wonder when they stopped with the hats... maybe after a bad bout of head lice :-) Headed back to Germany this fall, will have to visit the salt mines and Salzburg again. Thanks for stirring up some fun old memories and heres to creating some new ones.

Massachusetts Visit - From: It Seems That Some Stereotypes Do Contain Truth
Enjoyed reading your blog about Cape Cod and Plymouth. I was just there in August and had a fantastic time. The history around Plymouth was astounding. I loved the Statue of the 4 Fathers. Did you see it up on the hill in Plymouth. I too walked on the boardwalk in Sandwich. I was surprised as to what people in Massachusetts considered a boardwalk. Ours in Seaside, Oregon is between the beach and the town with lots of shops or hotels on it. Both versions are very unique. Happy traveling and Merry Christmas! Kathy

To echo the earlier comments - pics are great. Glad that you guys had a surprise (for Mike at least - Kelley being far wiser already knew it would be a good time) highlight of the entire venture here toward the end. Curiosity question - how are you going to feel about your prior preferred activity of zoos following the safari? Either maxed out on animals just for a time or is natural habitat the pinnacle that can't be duplicated?

Once in a Lifetime - From: Diversity Can Be Amazing And It Can Be Challenging
TeamTurner - awesome pics, we stayed down the road at Lions Sands, and the Safari was our #1 experience during our year around the world trip. The first safari experience is out of this world and you have captured it amazingly. South Africa as you have mentioned is an incredibly difficult place to digest as a foreigner - the memories of the townships will never be lost. They are 1,000x worse than any poverty I've seen anywhere in the world, which includes India, for no other reason that a bunch of people knowing put millions of people in that inhumane situation. Keep up the blogs. Your title for S.A. is great...a bit more tactful that ours!! Although I do believe that Apartheid will not be overcome for at least 5 generations, although if the world cup occurs down there the media will portray otherwise. Cheers,

By the way, you take brilliant photos! - From: Hanging in Mebourne and Aussie Rules Footy
Footy does have a bit of strategy. Each position has certain roles (e.g. ruck, rovers, taggers), team strategies include flooding and zones, team tactics can include short game passing (i.e. handballing heaps) or long game (preferring to kick to contests). AFL just seems unorganised because it doesnt use predetermined "team plays" like in NFL. Which is good as AFL is then fast paced and exciting, compared to NFL which has many stoppages and takes 3hrs to play 60min! But we cant really talk, with our 5 day cricket games :) Anyway, it's hard to understand AFL, but once you do it's then hard to stop loving it. I hope you liked Finland too, weird but wonderful country! :)

I know what you mean! - From: What To Do If You Find Yourself In Oia
I was in Santorini exactly a year ago this month. I still haven't gotten over it. It is one of my favorite places on this earth. I have been to many islands, but Santorini is so unique. Although I stayed in Fira, I agree that Oia is where you feel like you truly in the lost city of Atlantis. I never got bored. We hit the wine trails, went to the black and red sand beaches, and spent time shopping in both towns. We were in Santorini for 3 days, and for me that was not long enough. I can't wait to go back.

Laudromat? Whats that? - From: A Rich and Shattered Heritage
"Krakow has a drought of easily accessible laundromats" In Poland there is no such thingy like "laundromats". Nowhere! Semi-cultural issue. You should check this before arrival here. If you thin that they will be usable - maybe this is business opportunity fo you? :)

Thanks for your blog. I myself couldn't even go to visit, it would be too devastating for me, so I especially appreciate your photos and descriptions. Sorry you didn't make it inside Wawel Castle- it is an incredible space and one that fully emphasizes the artistic skills of the Polish people. I was there over 10 years ago and still recall being awed by the ceiling carved with face masks as well as by the intricate parquet floors. Be sure and find the restaurant that sells only roasted chicken ( by weight), great french fries and, FRESH squeezed orange juice. Carolyn ( Blogger name 'gunga')

erm....latvia holds onto the past - From: Nouveau Riche: The Latvian Way of Life
Hey. Im english. I am about to move to Latvia to start a business hopeully with my financee out there. I been there so many times over the past two years plus researched into its history and people. Believe me, Latvia dont want to hold onto the past. The older people may think the ussr way of life was great and should still have it. The younger people believe in the European Union. But the money which comes from the EU to the Latvian government should go on projects etc like new housing, new roads, new transport system and improve peoples way of life. Not always the case. The government keeps a lot of the money and improve their lifestyles, especially with their homes in Jurmala (21km west of Riga). Latvia wants to move on. Within the next ten-twenty years, when it has got rid of the older generations..it will completey. But believe me, Latvia hates Russia. Government always fighting, latvia claiming that Russia should pay them so many millions for treatment by them and germany in the second world war. Anyway,... enough history..glad your happy with Riga. Its a great little city. If you want to see my travel blogs and photos or Riga (and other euroland destnations.) please feel free to view on - www.myspace.com/danik_travels_the_world Cheers Danik

Trip to Pompeii - From: The Journey to Pompeii
Hi Michael and Kelley, Thanks for the honesty and great advice about the trip to Naples and Pompeii. My husband and I have been visiting the U.K. for two months and are conemplating a trip to Italy. Italian travel sounds chaotic. While living in Berlin for 12 years I experienced the overwhelming b.o. of people on public transportation. Man, I understand and sympathize. The British smell pretty good overall and are generally quite polite, so I definitely recommend travel in the U.K. Your comment about extensively traveling being a grind is one I definitely understand. I admire you and your wife for taking the plunge and doing it for a year! Thanks for the heads up about Prague. It makes me wish I had taken the opportunity to visit right after the Communist government failed. Best, Leisa

Oh to be a Hong Kong ex-pat's wife! - From: The Peak and Some Shopping
Of course, I HAVE to comment on the Hong Kong posts! Reading about your adventures makes me miss it SO much. As a student at Hong Kong University, I lived on the back side of the island and could hike up to the Peak from my dorm room or look down out my window and see the ships sailing out. Sounds like you guys definitely hit the highlights. Oh, and the concrete apartment complexes are sometimes dingier (is that a word?) inside and sometimes are filled with ingenious contraptions and beautiful glazed tiles that make living in a tiny box bearable. It's probably good that you didn't stay too much longer or your trip would be much shorter. After traveling in China or Southeast Asia, the prices in Hong Kong are a shock. I heard that once someone asked a wise man what he wanted to come back to earth as after he died. The wise man said, "That is easy. I would come back as a Hong Kong ex-pat's wife."

Mike and Kel, As a follow up to Leslie's blog, while at the Australian exhibit at the Roger Williams Zoo, we saw up close two laughing kookaburras. I figured they probably had a good sense of humor so I told them one of my favorite jokes. Immediately one of them flew off to another tree and the other one covered his head with his feathers. It may very well be the last time I share one of my humorous gems with a laughing kookaburra.

2 things - From: The Outlying Temples May Even Be Cooler Than The Big Ones
1) to Mr. Haines - "Brian" when typed using predictive text on a mobile is "Asian" so I think that speaks for itself 2) On the skin color - news update from APAC is that there have been a fair number of articles here about how the new trend among the young and/or wealthy in China has been to start using tanning salons. Apparently the pull of the western imagery of tanned movie stars and the like has won a group of converts and the strong disapproval of the older generations. Looking forward to seeing you in Singapore!

A diatribe on colour - From: The Outlying Temples May Even Be Cooler Than The Big Ones
Thanks for the answer to my question - it is as I suspected in the makeup of tourists. Regarding the "lighter is better" - I know that this seems particularly important to Japanese. Here in Jamaica it is also very important, but perhaps for a different reason. 90% of the population here is "black" but black here comes in a huge array of shades. Because of a complicated history of slavery followed by colonialism, lighter is better. When people here say you are "very brown" they don't mean dark brown, they mean very light brown. We have words for nearly every shade of person, and you are likely to be referred to on the street as your colour. For example, a "red" woman with negro facial features and a sort of carrot-coloured hair is called a cornmeal-coloured girl. On the street, someone who wants to call to her will likely say "hello! Cornmeal!" A very dark person will often have the nickname "Blackie." But these aren't considered offensive - just descriptive. The most beautiful dark-skinned woman will be considered ugly next to a horse-faced horrid looking brown woman. Mothers are notorious for always favouring their lightest skinned children, and most dark women would literally give up their right arm to be impregnated by a white or light-skinned man so that they can lighten the family tree. Ask any black person in Jamaica about their heritage and they will immediately start telling you about their Scottish great-grandfather, their English aunt, etc. etc. No matter how African they appear, they will always emphasize any real or imagined white forbearer and completely ignore the fact that they also have strong African heritage. Interestingly, they consider Asian people the ugliest people on Earth, despite their fair skin. Asian women are not coveted by men here, and they are only coveted by poor women if they have plenty money. There is a plethora of skin bleaching products here as well. We have a girl out where I live that people call "white girl" from that movie "White Girls" where the black men dressed as white sorority sisters at a college. The poor girl looks quite ridiculous, because she used to be fairly dark, and has bleached herself into an ash-gray colour from head to toe. Unfortunately, the poor people here don't understand that to avoid getting darker in the first place, they need to cover up and use sunscreen. Ahhhhh - the strange and complicated cultural differences around the world!

Hola - Glad the travels continue to go well. Your encounter with the chili oil is funny as I did the same things yesterday. The lady at the hawker center and I were not on the same page so when she gave me a choice between hot minced meat soup noodles and "chill" mince meat soup noodles I thought the latter was the good choice. Chill = chili (oil) so I spent the rest of the meal shaking as much of the oil off the noodles as I could. I don't know what "hot" would have entailed. I noted an appreciation for zoos in your earlier post. Count on hitting the Night Safari when you are here in Singapore then. One of their big tourist activities but a good time.

Mike and Kel, Looks like you guys had great fun with the wigs. Maybe you can start a new trend when you come back to Capital One. I was trying to come up with a sentence using the word ‘wig’. I love the wig pictures -- but how exactly are wigs tied to Catholic Christmas? While you both are quite striking in your do's, my personal fave is the older woman in the pink punk hair. BTW, you should both be able to hold your own at a chic art opening with all the great art you are seeing. Not too many people know Gris! I don't know if you knew this, but your TravelBlog autogenerates custom ads based on the title you give your entry. Today - it's all about the wig wholesalers. Target marketing at its finest. Shutter Drag!! - From: Entering Madrid
Mikey...your picture of the street band...excellent example of shutter drag. You had the principle subject of the band standing relatively still compared to the walker to the left of the frame. In daylight like that you need a shutter speed of around 1/100th to stop most normal motion. It looks like you were at about 1/30th here. So...you get the blurry walker which is a really cool effect. Another way to do this would be to actually follow the walker with your lens as they moved in front of the band. Then you're walker would have been relatively sharp and the band/background would be blurred. Your friendly neighborhood photographer and his unasked for tutorials ;)

this leg of your trip looks so wonderful! The towns are gorgeous with the white stacking of buildings...makes us all salivate back in the USA, with our suburbia and lack of design.... While you are there, try the raisins and let me know if they are amazing. When Bruce and I were just in France in October, I fell in love with the raisins. They were very moist and succulent, and tasted nothing like ours at home. It was as if they were just off the vine ( which they probably were, as they vine dry them there) and so fresh. Hope you can find some for a real treat. I imagine they would be similar there. love, Beth

Happy Thanksgiving - From: A Spontaneous End to a Plodding Sort of Day
Congrats on your safe arrival in Sevilla. I completely agree with your comment that a little planning and research go a long way to making a trip more enjoyable. I remember travelling with a friend and looking at each other ("What do you want to do?" "I dunno, how about you?") and getting trapped in a state of complete inertia. Arghhhh. We're very happy to be home this Thanksgiving. Last year we were sitting in a hotel room in China, admiring our new little daughter that we had just met. During her nap, we huddled up in the bathroom to call home and eat some weird Chinese food as our Thanksgiving feast (it was knuckle of something in a broth...far cry from turkey and cranberries). Enjoy your memorable Thanksgiving away from home - cheers to both of you on your big adventure!

Carriage Ride in Sevilla - From: Cathedral and Carriage Ride in Sevilla
Mike and Kel, It was fascinating to hear how much you guys enjoyed the carriage ride, especially Kel. I thought of three possibilities when you get back. 1. Spend your vacations with the Amish people. You could ride in their carriages all day long. 2. You guys have been looking for a business opportunity. Carriage rides around Richmond could be a big money maker. 3. You could go all out and do what bikers and runners and walkers sometimes do. Carriage ride from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It may be a first. No matter what, carriage riding would certainly give you plenty of time to ‘horse around’.

Kel and Mike, It appears like the situation you were in with the hostel owner was not desirable. I then began to think of ways you could avoid such uncomfortable situations in the future. 1. Ask the person if they would like to try on your backpack to see how comfortable it is. They’ll probably end the whole thing at that point. 2. Take the pack off your back and by mistake set it on the person’s foot. That should definitely speed things up. 3. Fall over backwards from the weight of the pack and knock over a lamp or some other piece of furniture. This should produce immediate results.

Glad you had a safe though uncomfortable flight. What were you thinking? Leg room? Better start looking at first class in the future. Keep the blogs coming, they are quite entertaining! Have fun

Make sure to have some vinho verde! - From: And it all begins....
I think that is how you spell it. It is green wine. Kind of a sparkling white. I remember really liking it when I was there. Granted, that was when I was 19 and thought the pink wine my mom drank from a jug was fancy. Love the blogs!!!! Keep them coming and know I'm reading every one! Also, remember, it is 3 kisses in Portugal!

Jet Lag Loopiness - From: And it all begins....
The jet lag must have really gotten to you b/c we all know you don't have pectoral muscles! Glad you both made it safely. Can't wait to keep up with your updates.

Negril - Sandals - From: Emotions Run Deep and Strong
Kelley, My husband and I were at that same resort in Negril last July with some friends as they got married and our thoughts about the resort were similar to yours. Great for partiers, not great for everyone! It did bring a lot of personal memories back for me, so just know that your travels are touching a lot of people, no matter how remotely, very deeply. Thanks for the updates, keep them coming! Wendy

Lewis Carroll - From: Work, Work Go Away, Come Again Another Day
The Lewis Carroll thing is genetic. I myself can recite "The Jabberwocky" entirely from memory..."'Twas brilling, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe...." Unexplainable, but genetic.

best wishes to you both - From: Nervousness Ensues as Time Dwindles
I am so excited for you guys. I can't wait to read more - you guys definitely need to put this in a book! Kelley, I know we talked about this, but you really need to do it - especially for all of those of us living vicariously through you for the next year! Wishing you both safe travels and lots of fun!

Baby Culture Shock - From: Over Time One Gets Tired of Planning
Mike and KT - I hope you have great trip! Enjoy your adventure :) As for all the friends having babies - we can relate as we were on the end of our friends joining parent-dom. It will change those backyard get-togethers some but we are starting to see how much fun the next stage can be. Plus you can still have the beers and hang on the deck after the kids are in bed (which is pretty early - so the night is still young)!! So the good times will still be here when you return.

WOW! - From: Nervousness Ensues as Time Dwindles
Will never cease to be astounded by your 'gumption' (as my grandmother called it!) to do something so fantastic in life. Although you will be greatly missed by your buddies at home, we are thinking of you and will visit your site often to see what you're up to. Safe travels and we love you! :) Alison & Creighton
