Friday is the "final" work day: do as much of the third trench as possible, clean the dusty, muddy rooms and floors, leave clothes and cruddy shoes at the site--and the final farewell ceremonies. Thoughts of "why can't we stay longer" as well as "it will be good to sleep in my own bed" abound. It's amazing how close we got when working on a common goal. A good time was had by all! "I think we all would love to take the breakfast buffet home...but we have one more crack at it tomorrow morning." (Eunice) What will we remember? What will we miss? Some thoughts... "I will remember and miss the camaraderie of a group of strangers coming together--working, laughing and sharing stories and labor, and then leaving as friends." (Kathe, Colorado) "The laughter, the ... read more

"Hump day is past. Now work is more serious (in one way), because we want to accomplish as much as we can for Blue Cross. And ... now work is more fun (in another way) because we know each other better and find comfort and joy working side by side. Conversations at first were about the who, what, and where of our lives. Now they are more about deeper issues -- closer to core beliefs and values. Communication with our Polish friends is better as well. We have derived sign language, smiles and nods, and a few common words with those who don't speak English -- we are learning a Polish word here and there, and they are recognizing an English word periodically. And with those who speak English, they explain more and more their lives, ... read more

"We feel like the Seven Dwarfs heading out to work at the Blue Cross Foundation's Outpatient Clinic in Czechowice-Dziedzice -- all in a row -- except there are only 4 of us (Amy, Andrea, Christina and Sally). We're all female, and we follow Ted (Tadeusz)! After our family meeting yesterday, we enjoyed Ted's company with us at lunch. Sonia also joins us and interprets. We have come to enjoy Ted's "quirkiness" and the quiet drives in the van -- even having a clue where to go -- turn right before McDonald's, follow the road by the church and turn at the railroad tracks. John (Yahn) must be half saint to be working and painting with 4 women all day, but he just smiles and shakes his head. Suavik, the therapist whose office we have invaded as ... read more

Tuesday and Wednesday, our second and third build days, we started to get into the swing of things. It continued to be cloudy and rainy, and we adjusted our tasks to be done based on the weather of the moment. At the main job site, it is finally declared that it's time to dig the ditch! It is to be a grade from 65cm to 100cm from the string...well, from roughly ground level. Several of us worked in the ditch for the day, pacing ourselves, and slowly lowering the base to avoid cave-ins. I always wondered if digging a ditch would be fun. Now I know. Everybody busted butt though, and it wasn't too bad. Randy The garage loft where Kathe & Earle were staining fence slats now became a site for sawing block, and Kathe ... read more

After a hearty breakfast and devotions in the Qubus Hotel lobby, our team walked across the street in a drizzle to the Blue Cross Foundation office for safety training and a team photo indoors. We are assigned to three different project locations in Bielsko-Biala: an outpatient clinic, the readaptation center, and an administration building. Each are located approximately 20 minutes from our hotel, and we are transported by various means. Tasks include removing wallpaper, preparing walls for painting, scraping, taping, starting on a ceiling, sanding fence boards, doors and windows, painting and staining. Later this week, and hopefully after the drizzly rains stop, we can tackle a "tunnel", which is a 20-meter long trench for wastewater plumbing. We form mini-teams at each of our locations and are working well together. It is hard to "spokojmie" -- ... read more

Our team was up early this morning to grab breakfast, check out of our Krakow hotel and board the bus for Oświęcim where Auschwitz Concentration Camp and Birkenau Death Camp are located. There is an anticipated apprehension as we approach; we want to see this, and yet we don't. Our English-speaking guide, Ania, provided a factual and moving tour of a very difficult place. We were all very well aware of the immense evil here. In spite of this, we heard birds singing nearby as we walked through the barbed wire front gate under the sign "Arbeit Macht Frei" (work sets you free). It is appropriate that raindrops fall as we walk in silence among the ruins of over 300 barracks with only chimneys remaining in the Birkenau Camp. They appear like sentinels--witnesses of horrific events. ... read more

A hearty Polish breakfast refreshed our team on Saturday morning, and several of us ventured out for first experiences in withdrawing Polish Zloty from ATMs. One of us actually emptied an ATM! Today promised to be sunny and warm, and it is -- a wonderful day for a city orientation tour via electric tram. We boarded right outside our hotel entrance to explore the beautiful old city of Krakow, including the Kazimierz district. Our group also had a chance to visit the Oskar Schindler Factory Muzeum, viewing typical life for Krakow residents from pre-WWII era through the German occupation time period. The remainder of the day is free time for everyone to explore and enjoy Krakow on their own. Several took the opportunity to tour the Wieliczka Salt Mine (UNESCO site) with its 3-mile underground walk, ... read more

Our team arrived safely in Krakow today meeting up with everyone either at the Krakow Balice Airport or the 24 Guesthouse hostel. Some of us had a chance to grab a shower and rest a little bit, while others squeaked into our first in-country team meeting with only minutes to spare. It was apparent that several of the team members had met each other through previous builds. We went over the basics about the upcoming build week and introduced ourselves to each other. Our team includes Thrivent members from all over the United States, representing Colorado (Earle & Kathe), Illinois (Eunice & Mo), Indiana (Kevin & Erin), Iowa (Andrea, Christina & Sally), Michigan (Amy and Randy), Minnesota (Andrew, Laurie & Mike), South Carolina (Monte & Twyla), and Wisconsin (Bruce, Chuck, Kathy & Terri). Friday, our last work day, is a bittersweet day: we experienced highs and lows all day long. We sang ‘happy birthday’ to Sue on our bus ride to the worksite; we launched ourselves into getting as many walls plastered and finishing up as much drain tile and landscaping as possible; we enjoyed a Polish “second breakfast” with various delicious pastries; and we cleaned our tools and the surrounding work areas for the last time. We celebrated our incredible accomplishments this week and grilled generous portions of kielbasa to share our BBQ lunch with several Habitat families, and we each received thank-you certificates from Habitat for our efforts, enthusiasm, patience, smiles, laughter and display of construction and survival skills that helped us move the project further along. Building 8 will be dedicated in mid-September and, after more ... read more
