Team2Build

From July 19-28, 2013,
a team of 16 energetic and enthusiastic volunteers from all over the United States will travel to Budapest, Hungary. As part of a Thrivent Builds Worldwide / Habitat for Humanity trip, we will help install window, wall and attic insulation to an existing family's home in Nagymaros to allow for proper heating in the cold winter months.

On our last work day, we decided to support the Summer Olympics and split our team across the two work sites to make as much progress as possible. Everyone seemed to have a little friendly competition either with others on their work team or with themselves. Adam drove the demolition team directly to the other location to continue to ripping out concrete work surfaces and removing tiles from walls and floors in several rooms. The primary team stopped at the grocery store along the route to pick up lunch supplies. We were a curiosity to the neighbors as we scoured the aisles and shelves for paper goods, meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, snacks and cookies. Several people approached us to ask about our team (our matching t-shirts draw attention to us!), but we unfortunately don't know enough ... read more

For the second day in a row, we focused our entire team on our primary work site. This allowed us to increase our productivity in all areas. We had the entire building to ourselves with Zygmunt giving us complete access to all rooms on all 3 main levels. While the rooms may look alike in photos, team members can easily identify which room they worked on and on which floor and on which side of the building. Some are similar, but they are unique in degree of completion. Standing outside, you can clearly hear Americans hard at work, laughing, and encouraging each other. It is easy to hear how we are witnessing to the neighborhood without realizing it. The surrounding area is all government-subsidized housing. The flats must be small, because locals frequently just stand at ... read more

Whopper Wednesday

We had a whopper of a Wednesday as we all found our niches and hit our stride today. Radiators continued to be scraped, painted, flipped and painted again. It takes 4 strong men to turn over one of the larger radiators -- they are big and heavy! We have a multitude of mixers helping to achieve just the right consistency for mortar and for plaster. Blocks are being sawed, bricks are chipped, mortar is added to put them in place, rubber mallets used to set and level, and finally plaster is troweled in layer upon layer. Zygmunt, our on-site supervisor, was so pleased with our speed and quality that he actually smiled when we asked him if he was satisfied. He made it clear to us that we are providing some of the best work he's ... read more

Day Two Tuesday!

Our team demonstrated flexibility by sending six members to work for a new charity whose partnership with HFH Gliwice began today. This included partial interior demolition of a 1960's building given to the charity by the state to be refurbished for use by single mothers over 25 years of age. The six members of our team worked hard, had fun, and helped establish this new working relationship for HFH Gliwice. The plan is for this sub-team to return on Friday to further the project in preparation for future teams. Our primary team focused on the efforts started yesterday, painting radiators, mixing mortar and plaster, repairing walls with block and brick, and teaching others new skills. It was a lot of hard work, tedious and frustrating at times, but we accomplished a lot and have surprised our ... read more

Our team was up bright and early to enjoy a delicious breakfast with eggs or sausage, followed by a team meeting and devotions. Everyone was excited to see the work site in Swietochlowice. It's about a 30-40 minute ride from Gliwice, but there is a lot to see along the way. Lydia passed around our team journal at breakfast -- here are today's team thoughts: "My expections for our building project are..." I wish I had my chainsaw and nail gun from New Zealand. But, on second thought, I know whatever we do will be fun and the greatest to do is to succeed. Sounds like work I might be able to handle. I expect that we will accomplish much and be a true help to advancing this project. My expectation is that I will find ... read more

Head 'em up and move 'em out! By 7am, everyone already had breakfast and checked out of our hostel/hotel to load up the bus for our journey from Krakow to Gliwice. It was a nice surprise for several on our team to see Michal and Miroslaw again. The streets of Krakow were quiet as we motored our way out of the city and into the countryside, and we saw people walking alongside the road on their way to church. About an hour later, we arrived at our first stop of the day in Oswiecim. More later in a separate blog. Question of the Day: One Thing I Learned Yesterday Was... The pulpits in all the cathedrals are raised and have little "roofs" over them. The reason for this is acoustics! The elevation and the top cover ... read more

Our Sunday worship was an interesting turn of events as we walked through the front gate "Arbeit Macht Frei" at Auschwitz Concentration Camp to the tune of Jewish students chanting softly in the background. Most somber. Our guide, Anna, who is local Oswiecim resident led us through the exhibits, explaining the horrific, demonic details of Auschwitz Concentration Camp and Birkenau Death Camp. The bright sunshine and puffy clouds helped offset the feeling of dread and lost hope. Some of our team discussed what role forgiveness plays in all of this. It is very important we never forget. In this, history should never be repeated.... read more

The great news is that Chris and Colin finally made it to Krakow, but Terri wasn't convinced until she personally saw both of them. Prior to the team heading out for an orientation tour by electric tram, we'd learned that C & C's flight had landed at the Krakow Balice Airport...and the plan was to have Chuck & Terri meet them at 24 Guesthouse around 12:30. Through a comedy of errors, there were several disconnects. This will give you an idea of the language barrier -- the message relayed as "Chris & Colin have arrived" was translated as "Chris & Colin are here but they must go back to the United States tonight." :) All is well, though, as neither had to return so soon, and they are here. Luggage arrival - date yet to be ... read more

Some team members landed in Krakow a day or two ago and have caught up with jet lag. Most of the rest of the team arrived today, sleepy, but safe and sound! Chris and Colin were stuck in Chicago for an extra night and are scheduled to arrive in Krakow at 10 AM on Saturday. After freshening up and a little rest, we had our first team meeting with new 'family' members at 24 Guesthouse, introducing ourselves and sharing logistics for the upcoming build week. Our team includes a blend of Thrivent members and nonmembers from all over: Alaska (Lydia), California (Keith & Gunnar), Colorado (Hanns & Julene), Illinois (Eunice, Mo & Ken), Minnesota (Marvin, Caleb & Mollie), South Carolina (Jodie), Wisconsin (Colin, Chris, Terry, Chuck & Terri), and Switzerland (Annika, Karin & Becky).
