Team Free consists of Marcus (Dad), Melissa (Mum), Jackson (13), Harrison (11) and Hunter (7). Team Free flew from Australia to Europe and then spent 4 months 'Overlanding' back to Kuala Lumpur via the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Mongolia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia before flying home to Queensland, Australia. We departed on Sunday 17th June 2012 and returned to Australia on Wednesday October 10th 2012
What an amazing adventure. We loved every moment and are now planning our next adventure.
Have less, do more, be more.
We made it……………… After 116 days more than 42,000 km and over 22,000km of that being via ‘overlanding’ through 20 countries from London, England to Kuala Lumpur, we are now back home on the Gold Coast, Australia. It was a strange and surreal feeling when the alarm went off at 5:45am on Day 116 in our hotel in KL. We’re going home!!! Country number 21 – Australia. It’s interesting to see how the boys ‘chew up and spit out’ a 8 hour flight from KL to Coolangatta now as if it’s just another day on the road, a short day compared to what they have experienced since arriving in London back in mid-June. Arriving back in Australia always feels good. The smell of the coastal salt air as you walk across the tarmac at Coolangatta Airport

Team Free are coming home!!! 4 months ago, this moment seemed so far away. It’s currently 11:40pm here in KL, Malaysia on our final night of our epic ‘overlanding’ adventure from London to KL (Kuala Lumpur). We fly back to Australia on Air Asia’s D7207 to Coolangatta at 10:00am tomorrow. Arriving into Langkawi by ferry on day 107 saw us enter our last country. Country number 20. We joined together with 3 German backpackers, who were travelling with us from Krabi, to get a van to our hotel. This saved us a massive $4.00. Here we found our nice budget 3 star hotel/resort on the beach. We

Days 95 to 107 saw us push through the magic 100 day milestone of our trip. We also got the news that both the Storm and Swans won their respective Grand Finals while travelling through Thailand. Our 13 days in Thailand began by arriving into Bangkok after overlanding across the Cambodian/Thai border. Bangkok is a vibrant city with plenty of traffic, noise, colour, food and entertainment (not necessarily for kids). We only planned to spend a few days in Bangkok and get to the southern beaches as soon as possible. 3 nights gave us time to organise our transport south, check out a few sights and enjoy some Thai food in the capital. We

Cambodia – A contrasting 5 days from Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam to Phnom Phen to Siem Reap in Cambodia to Bangkok in Thailand. Days 91 to 95 saw us travel through Cambodia. For Europe 5 days is a long time in one country, but for more recent countries, 5 days is quite quick. You can pretty much drive across Cambodia in less than 12 hours from the Vietnamese border to the Thai border. Day 91 saw us leave Vietnam on the Mekong Express Bus as in our last blog posting. After some discussion with the Tuk Tuk driver to explain that we only wanted one Tuk Tuk, we were on our way to our hotel. We always try to travel together to prevent

Busy cities, crazy traffic, street hawkers, bumpy roads, chaotic markets, war history, cheap hotels, amazing landscapes, luxury resorts with impressive beaches and infinity pools. Vietnam has it all to offer. After a massive 36 hours of travelling from Hong Kong to Hanoi, we all slept amazingly well as expected. This is normally the case after travelling on overnight trains or buses and after breakfast we quickly got out of the hotel and stepped into the chaos that is Hanoi to explore another foreign city. Staying alive during this trip is of upmost importance to us. Weaving a path through millions of motorbikes as we cross the road ensured we had to keep our wits about

After 75 days on the road, we have all finally come down with a stomach bug with the plumbing working overtime. Melissa was hit the worst with 2 days in bed. We knew from the onset of this trip that this was always going to happen, but when and where was always the question. Now we know. We were extremely lucky that Melissa didn’t come down with this bug 24 hours earlier, as the bus from Yangshuo to Shenzhen was horrid. Sleeper buses are not designed for anyone over 5’10” and the roads are not built for cars or buses, but for monster trucks!!! As I finished my last blog with the

The last time I was in Beijing was back in 2008 to watch Dunc win a Gold Medal. The number of volunteers around who spoke English during the Olympics made it very easy to get around. Well, it’s not 2008 anymore and all the volunteers have all long gone home. We crossed the Mongolian/Chinese border late at night on the 17th August at the edge of the Gobi Desert. Once we arrived at the border, every train carriage is lifted up and a new set of undercarriage wheel sets are attached due to the different gauge of the Chinese tracks. This process takes

Day 57 to Day 62 takes us through Mongolia and the halfway point of our adventure. We left Irkutsk on the 10pm train to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The taxi ride from the hotel was an adventure alone. The trick must be to go as fast as you can weaving through the traffic. Well that’s how they drive in Russia. The biggest difference is the number of backpackers/travellers on this leg of the Trans-Mongolian. From Moscow to Irkutsk, apart from the 50 odd Germans, we were the only non-Russians on the train. Now, it feels like a Contiki Tour. Our carriage is full of travellers. Swedes, Norwegians, English,

These last 14 days have seen us cover 5 times zones across the largest country in the world to now only be 1 hour behind Australia (East Coast Time). We travelled 5,990kms (let’s call it 6,000km) from St Petersburg to Irkutsk via Moscow on our first leg of the Trans-Mongolian railway. Leg 2 is from Irkutsk, Russia to Ulaanbaatar, UB for short, in Mongolia and the final stage is from UB to Beijing, China. The Trans-Siberian remains in Russia the entire journey from St Petersburg all the way to Vladivostok on the Sea of Japan. The actual trains the ‘Trans-Mongolian’ and the ‘Trans-Siberian’ don’t actually exist unlike the ‘Orient Express’, the ‘Ghan’ and the ‘Indian Pacific’. They

Days 39 through 45 saw us arriving by ferry into Riga Latvia, driving through Latvia and Estonia and then catching another ferry to Helsinki Finland. Arriving in Riga, Latvia on Day 39 of the Team Free adventure was the first real step east and the first country where English isn’t freely used as much as other parts of Europe to date. The weather for this stage of the trip was absolutely amazing with the temperature ranging between 25 and 29 degrees each day. We even managed a few hours at the beach for a swim in Estonia. We were told if we were here one week earlier, it would have only been between 10-15 degrees. Riga saw us
