Taz Chris - Natasha Burrell

Natasha Burrell So finally after what seems like years and years of tightening the purse strings - only buying clothes at Primark, eating Tesco Value everything and never going out (okay so that's a bit of a lie!) we are off on our travels of South East Asia and are embarking on a long overdue Divermaster Internship in the rather seedy location of Pattaya, Thailand (Chris can't wait!!)! First stop though is Bangkok then it's wherever the mood, sun and diving (okay maybe the budget too) decide to takes us...its a hard life!

Please keep in touch with us via our online journal (how posh!) at http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Taz---Chris/ - we will update it as much as possible rather than send group emails - that way we don't clog your inbox with stuff we think is great, but well, you don't give a hoot about! Everyone's happy!

Hope to hear from ya soon! x

The Man of the Forest.....
The Man of the Forest.....
....or Orang-utan as it is in Malay!
So not the Falkland islands this time...just threw that one in so it would turn red on our world map of blogged countries, cheating we know... but hey! Well, its been a long time since we last blogged you as we have been extra busy.. more about that later! First things first:- in our last week in Borneo we left Semporna (hooray) and the beautiful islands (boooo) and headed kind of Northish to Sepilok, which is an area of rainforest just outside the town of Sandakhan and home to one of only four places in the world that rehabilitates orphaned [View Full Entry]

sorry about the angle, I was falling over at the time!
Are a small collection of Islands in the south Atlantic. In 1982 they were invaded by Argentina! We're not there..... we are in sunny Borneo! Okay, its sunny most of the time! So the main reason for us being here is of course the world class diving at Sipidan and the surrounding Islands. So, while we were in the Neighbourhood, we thought it would be rude not to take a look! We arrived in Borneo on the evening of the 28th April and took an internal flight down to Tawau near Semporna, which is a small Muslim fishing village and [View Full Entry]

...In hellish Hanoi!!!
Untitled Natasha Burrell Following the Ho Chi Minh Trail took us to Hanoi, the capital city in the North of Vietam! Oh joy, such a delightful hell hole! We really did try to like it, but once we had been duped into the grubbiest digs in the history of man (including Prehistoric caves!) we knew we were in for a rough ride! It seemed that all the North Vietnamese wanted to do was take our money, but who can blame them it is splendid, and just be generally unfriendly!! If there was a Tax to be added they would add [View Full Entry]

Well, obviously the title only works if you sing it to the tune of Follow the Yellow Brick Road! Oh and yes the title was thought up by Chris! (Robin Williams would be proud!) Just spent an amazing four days touring Vietnam, including parts of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, on a....wait for it....not a bus...not a train...not by foot (well sometimes)...but by Motorbike!!! (Sorry parents!) After deciding we wanted to do a tour with a difference we were pleasantly suprised when we were approached by a tout for a company called Easy Riders who specialised in motorbike tours of [View Full Entry]

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!!! (yay) (Again many apologies for Chris' title!!) Moving swiftly on...we are coming to the end of our stay in Nha Trang so thought we would grace your IT equipment with a blog...how very gracious of us!? We arrived here on the 12th after taking a sleeper (?) train from Saigon, except the sleeper tickets we paid for were actually "sit bolt up right for the night" tickets! So after the anglo-vietnamese negotiations seemed to fall flat on thier arse, the universal language of hard currency spoke volumes and after being relieved of a further bank busting 3 [View Full Entry]

The picture doesnt do it justice because its huge! Its the largest religious building in the world!
Untitled Natasha Burrell First things first:- Chris is to blame for the title, which he finds so very amusing, I (Taz) accept no responsibility for it and its stupidness! (because you don't get it Taz!) (No its just plain stupid Chris!) Secondly, here are some photos of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. We hope you appreciate them as we got up at 0400 to be there for 'sunset', but it just got light and the sun hid behind the clouds all day instead! Its a very beautiful and fascinating place and we would recommend going to everyone! The outer [View Full Entry]

Temple of Bayon
Wall engravings at Bayon
Temple of Bayon

We arrived in Sihanoukville yesterday lunchtime in the hope of taking in some nice beaches and catching some rays again, since Pattaya had been largely lacking in this department! Our little adventures began as soon as we got off the bus and found that the only way into town was by motor bike, after persuading Laura, who had the largest bag, that this was okay we loaded our backpacks on the front and clung on to the back as we sped on into town! After getting ourselves a nice place to crash we headed to the beach. Perhaps naively we [View Full Entry]

Who could resist buying a bracelet from this little girl...?
Sun Set
Cuuuuute!

So as we boarded the terminal transfer bus at Bangkok airport we got our first smell of Cambodia, from the sweaty armpits of our fellow passengers (and that was just Laura!!) and thought to ourselves why would we want to go somewhere that smelt worse than Pattaya... Well as luck would have it Phnom Penh is fantastic (and doesn't smell too bad either!!) The people are so friendly and the city has tonnes to offer - not just Go Go bars and cheap beer! Hooray! It retains its Asian identity really well in comparison to other cities such as Bangkok, [View Full Entry]

And instructors!
Well, well dear blog readers we would like to mark the ending of our time in Pattaya with a Super Blog!!! Fasten those seat belts and here we go.... We have finally entered the world of Professional Divers and were happily signed off as Dive Masters on the 24th March! God help the diving industry!!! We had two weeks of exams, skills and stamina tests - these were mostly fun, but sometimes not!!! One of the highlights of the course was doing a full equipment exchange at the bottom of the sea while sharing one regulator (one breathing bit for [View Full Entry]

Dive Master!
Dive Master!
the dreaded 21st skill!!!

We're still in it's backside!!! Yes Pattaya remains full of Blackpool charm....but at least it's not raining or snowing! The diving is keeping us busy, and we are clocking up the Specialities quite nicely, in the last couple of weeks we have completed our Search and Recovery divers course, which may benefit those of you who have boats and happen to drop anything over the side, and for other people who throw things randomly into the sea then immediately regret it (it could happen!!!). We also completed our Wreck divers speciality so we can now go into the wrecks instead of [View Full Entry]
