| 13th November 2009 Michael O'Donnabhain | Reading your blog - From: The People That You Meet Hi Tara, My name is Michael and I'm writing to you from London, England. I have also started writing a blog, mostly to keep myself amused and engaged with the world as, like you, I used to teach English and lived in some interesting places. My idea is to go through each country in the world and learn something about that place. I've been reading books, listening to music, reading blogs and news reports and cooking traditional dishes. Right now, I'm doing Mongolia and came across your blog. I've really enjoyed reading it and it's made all the more powerful by the fact that you're still in Mongolia. I've referenced your blog on mine www.learningabouttheworld.com and asked people to drop by and wish you luck! I had a similar experience to yours, spending two years in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. At the time, it all seemed a bit crazy, but now I miss it, in a strange way. Anyhow, best of luck for the rest of the academic year and greetings from rainy and cold London (although not as cold as Ulaan Baator, I bet!) |
| 8th November 2009 Laura | Book - From: The People That You Meet I do hope you plan on writing a book.... soon. |
| 8th November 2009 Another Mongolian | - From: The People That You Meet Just an average married guy with 1 daughter, 1 mortgage, drunk father, teenage brother sitting alone at home at night with my wife and daughter sleeping by my side and finding your posts amusing. How is that for another Mongolian? Doesn't love his job too much, but thinks that one day he will make it big but actually feeling like he is starting to have a very early mid age crisis at the prime age of 26. We are not that much different from you. It is just the package that looks different. |
| 21st September 2009 Mom | - From: Fighting the Good Fight for a Hot Shower I had to laugh when I saw the electrical tower on its side. Sort of represents Mongolia's infrastructure issues, doesn't it? |

| 6th February 2009 Matthew | It gets old real fast. - From: How do I love Mongolia? Let me Count the Ways. I'm an American who has lived in Ulaanbaatar for more than a year and a half. If you come here for a few weeks in the summertime, you'll think it's the greatest country in the world. If you actually live here for some real time, you'll get sick of the BS, idiocy, etc., very fast. For example: I taught at two universities last year. Mongolian university students seem to think that the way to get a diploma is to cheat, beg, and whine your way to it. The idea of actually studying, going to class, and passing exams is totally foreign for Mongolian students. |
| 6th February 2009 Matthew | Yes, you love it here, younger brother. But can you put up with living here? - From: How do I love Mongolia? Let me Count the Ways. But can you put up with living here? I've lived here for a year and a half. Got questios? ask me. |

What are the polite things a guest should remember when you visit someones Ger? Do you bring gifts? Do you greet in a special way? Do you eat things in a certain order. How do you recipercate hospitality?Dad |
| 12th December 2008 Tara Munch | - From: Counting the Cold I am glad that you like the blog. I chose Mongolia because of the catch-22 of international teaching. I was teaching in a very small village in Alaska and decided that I needed a change. I applied to a ton od schools but if you haven't taught in an international school you can't teach in an international school. You sort of have to go where you get a job offer. I was offer Mongolia and I thought that it would be interesting so I took it. I sort of wish I had a better story. Somethings are expensive. Western food for one is outrageous. Eating out is pretty cheap and so is pretty much anything to do with entertainment. Movie tickets are about 2.00$. People are pretty nice here especially if they happen to speak English. I haven't really had too many problems. Hope that answers your questions. |
| 11th December 2008 Amy | Keep the blogs coming....and pictures - From: Counting the Cold I try to check your blog several times a week. I love it! I have a question, why Mongolia, and how expensive are things over there.....oh, and is everybody friendly to you? Thanks! Amy |
