The SLOW boat Asia » Laos » West » Ban Houayxay
Sat 17th Feb We all went for a last breakfast at JoMa’s I was devastated as they had run out of cinnamon swirly buns. Keirra and I got a TukTuk to the ferry port and got on our boat for the day. There were a few comfortable seats but they had already gone. The boat filled up as we were sitting on a small wooden bench with upright back. We took it in turns to sit on the floor leaning against the wall and on the bench (the floor being more comfortable!) There was an elephant festival that was on this [View Full Entry]

TFri 16th Feb Yes ended up bowling at midnight. And in my usual bowling style either got gutter balls or 9pins over. I didn’t lose though but only cause the boys were going for fastest ball which Luke won. Today we lay in and then went to JoMa’s bakery for lunch and then did some cultural looking at temples (Watts). As well as around what was the kings palace. We climbed the hill in the afternoon to watch the sun set and then did some night market shopping where I resisted buying a wooded elephant head as it would be impractical [View Full Entry]

Sat 10th Train got to Nong Khai about 9.45 it took till 12.30 to get across the border and to Vientiane the capital of loas. I found a really helpful travel agent who sorted out the rest of my travels in Asia. I have decided to go to Cambodia next to avoid Vietnamese new year where transport shuts down. There is a strong french influence here as they only moved out 50 years ago. I had a lovely crepe for dinner. As capital cities go its tiney. I'm coming back this way so decided to get a bus to Vang Vieng [View Full Entry]

Thur 8th Up early to go to Al's school (I did my PGCE with him). It was great seeing him again. The children moved around classrooms and in his they could make grass skirts or (with me) flower garlands or cardboard surf boards. After helping out there I went and bought my train ticket adn then went to the temple of the golden budda but it was shut. I then [View Full Entry]

Tue 30th I wandered through Aonang and had a pineapple pancake- I'm going to live of the pancakes they are lovely. And then at 2.20 (after the others had woken at 2pm) we (Angela, Caroline, Adam {a different brummy one} and Ray) rushed to catch the 3pm boat. As we got of we were once again harassed by places to stay. We ended up sharing little huts. I slept on the floor (on a duvet) with the other 2 girls in the bed.
