It's not often I feel like I'm from sticks, but today I hail from the sticks of Austin, TX. London Heathrow is a "sexy" airport. High-end stores abound. All the technical gadetry one could ever desire. In the Sony "store", an HD tv that does something fantastic with the motion of a soccer ball across the screen. (I'm sorry but the magic of it all is lost on me. I did however see the shadow of the soccer ball on the field.) Check out the accompanying pictures. Some are catawompus because I was trying to take them inconspicuously by my side. Under the depatures signage there is a bar that changes colors, pink purple, blue, green (you get the idea). Not too far from the bar is one of the alcohol duty-free shops. The Americans could ... read more

I love to travel. Why? It's really hard to explain. At least hard to explain in short Reader's Digest condensed stories that capture the readers attention. It must have something to do with all the things that can't be read about but must be experienced. Like the watching the Lavatory Vehicle suction out the pee and poop out of an airplane. Now that's not something you see everyday. You think about things you don't typically think about in a given day. Like, "What's that guys job title?" and "Is he wearing gloves?" and "Do you suppose he has to place the yellow trash can under the hose connection to catch the drips/spills?" Then there is the group of three young men, probably in their twenties watching everyone in the bar. They are actually doing well at ... read more

T minus 22 minutes until my Out of Office goes up. Although I technically won't be leaving for Budapest until Monday afternoon, I'm taking this afternoon off to prepare to go camping this weekend, a vacation before my vacation. Trust me, I earned both vacations this week at work. Since a few people have asked and I have not had a chance to respond to the individual emails, I explain a little more about my trip. A couple of years ago I met an Indian named Vic in Bangalore. He and I became good friends while I was there. He has since moved to Budapest, doing more or less what he did in Bangalore and still with Unisys. Although I hope to visit the Unisys centre while in Budapest, this vacation is purely vacation. Now, to ... read more

Bangalore, India 150707 0911 local time I’ve grown accustomed to the power outages. They average about 4 a day. The first one in the elevator was a little unnerving but after a while you get used to it. In the elevator at work, when the power goes out, the elevator has to recalibrate itself by descending all the way back down to the basement. Not to worry, the descent is so gradual you don’t even realize you are going down. It just takes forever. When the power goes out twice on the same trip, a trip up to the fourth floor can take 10 minutes. Rick and Scott said that it didn’t happen until Nathan and I came, but then again Rick and Scott say a lot of things didn’t happen until Nathan and I ... read more

Bangalore, India 140707 1711 local time I love the food here. And yes most of everything is spicy. But not so spicy that it isn’t edible. I wish that I could remember all the names. One particular favorite is dosa, which is like a thin rolled pancake, with you choice of chutney. There are some chutneys that are anonymously vegetable flavored and green in color, some tomato based with variation in chilies, other are coconut based. I wish I could remember them all. At the Chancery Pavilion where we were staying, they were served in colorfully arranged dollops on the plate. I’ve been unable to write this weekend due to a terrible stomach ache. It’s hard to see the humorous side of life when you are in so much pain. I’m caught somewhere between sour ... read more

Bangalore, India 100707 0617 local time Arrrggghhh! Two and a half hours of sleep and I’m awaken by the Bangalore Philharmonic again, toot toot, honk honk. And supposedly this hotel is quieter than the first. We work from 3p to 3a local time to catch most of the states online, which means we get back to the hotel around 4am. Morning light reaches us shortly after 6am. My confounded body has to wake up with the daylight even though I have the curtains pulled tight. As I write, it is almost 8p at home in Austin. Enough about me… Another observation from Rick, if at first you don’t succeed, find a different starting point. There is very little developed around the office complex from which we are working. I mean much in the way of ... read more

Bangalore, India 080707 1553 local time I’m somewhat disappointed in myself that things I would have written into my travel blog only 2 days ago have become so common place for me that I don’t even think twice about them now. I’m going to struggle to come up with some of those things but those are the things that make India, India. Even though today is typically a day that those traveling on business get together and have fun in the community, I feel like I’ve been going non-stop since I’ve been here. I finally got the first decent sleep I’ve had since I’ve been here. I just woke up shortly before I started writing. I decided to take today to get back to me, reflect on what I’ve seen, heard, smelled, tasted, felt. Then ... read more
