I apologize for the absence of blogs lately. I have just been in Berlin for a week for my final year seminar with my program. I will definitely write about that next, but wanted to catch everyone up on another trip I made in May to Vienna with Alex, a fellow Vanderbilt MBA student! Alex had planned to come to Europe to travel around and we decided it would be fun to meet up for a weekend and see something new and different. I had always heard fabulous things about Vienna and it was fairly easy to get to from Germany, so we decided that was a great destination. I couldn't get any more time off work unfortunately, so Alex and I met at the Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof in the evening and headed together to the Airport ... read more

Continued from Part 1…. Upon our arrival in Amsterdam, we grabbed a Taxi and headed to our beautiful hotel, the Ambassade Hotel, on one of the main Canals within the city center. This hotel was the combination of about 10 Canal Houses and was quite unique. Our room was beautiful with a really high ceiling and exquisite decorations. I have to say, after my many hostels, I was impressed with our choices of hotels in Paris and Amsterdam. I had made reservations for us at the Mexican Restaurant, Los Pilones, which I had eaten at with Megan and Brooke back in October. I begged for forgiveness from my mom and Vivian since they eat Mexican food all the time, but I was in need of a fix. The meal took just about as long as the ... read more

I am narrowing down on my last 6 weeks of work, and 9 weeks on this lovely continent. The weather lately has been fantastic, actually I dare say kind of warm, and I have been trying to change up my wardrobe a bit (remember no air conditioning - not even at work!) I have a few more trips planned over the next 6 weeks, but I want to hang around Germany and Karlsruhe a bit as it is now pool, parks, and grill season and who would want to miss that plus a couple of beach bars. (They dump a bunch of sand somewhere and turn it into a bar. Awesome concept) The big finale comes in July and there have been some tentative changes to our plans as we weren’t able to acquire our Russian ... read more

Yesterday, I actually got kind of warm, enough to take my jacket off...this is a revelation! Summer is on its way and I am thrilled, except that it means that my time over here is almost over. The countdown is now at 2 months for my internship, 2 1/2 months until I am home in Austin, and 3 months until I am in Nashville. Crazy. Work is going well, and I am enjoying my project. It is also fun getting to know the 'German' way of working. There are some major differences here that I have noticed I thought I might share. 1. Most companies over here are more inclined to the non-cubicle/shared office layouts. This was new for me, as I am used to having my small (very small) privacy in a little grey cubicle. ... read more

Spring is here. The trees are regaining leaves, flowers are blooming, its raining...a lot...oh wait thats just Germany. :-) As spring approaches and the idea of Summer is infecting this town, I can not help but realize that my days here are numbered. So much to see, so little time!! I have lots planned over the next 3 months, trying to squeeze in everything I can, see friends again, and try to just take in the beauty of a German Summer. (Beergardens, beach bars, Swimming Pools) I am in amazement at how fast this year has really gone. It is already the middle of my 8th month here...unimaginable. Don't get me wrong, I miss everyone very much and am excited about returning home, but its nothing like a light at the end of the tunnel to ... read more

Last weekend I had some friends in to visit since I had the apartment all to myself. It’s been nice being able to take over the whole place for a couple of weeks, but I am looking forward to my new flatmate’s arrival. She is from France and speaks very good German, not much English, I believe this will be a good thing for my German! My Couchsurfing friend Ulf came to 'surf' with me last Thur-Sat which was a highlight because not only do I not see him very often, but he was my first official Surfer! Finally, I had the chance to be a host, which was a lot of fun. The rest of the crew from my program came on Friday and Saturday and we made the most of the very small Karlsruhe ... read more

After a harsh German winter, Megan and I could think of nothing better than a long weekend in the Turkish Riviera. Actually, really all I said is that I wanted to be warm, and well there was a really good offer for Antalya, Turkey, so we booked it! :-) I was fairly exhausted from all my previous travels around Germany and Italy, but as I ran through the ice and snow falling from the sky to get from train to train and off to the airport in Stuttgart, I was absolutely thrilled to be heading to 20 degree celcius weather! Megan and I met in Stuttgart and slowly found our way to Terminal 4 at the airport, the well...ghetto terminal...It took forever to check in to our Sun Express flight, and then get through security, but ... read more

Sorry for the delay in my blogs, I have been a busy girl lately both with work and travel. I hope everyone has had a fabulous Easter, I have just returned from Turkey, which will follow in the next blog, and had a wonderful time in the sun. I am back in cold Germany where it is snowing and am trying to readjust to the idea that it wont be 80 degrees tomorrow. :-( I'd like to catch everyone up on the last few weeks however. Three weeks ago, I was happy to meet up with a friend I had met last year during my interview weekend at South Carolina. Doug and I met up at the Karlsruhe train station on Saturday morning and jumped on the train for an hour long ride down to Freiburg. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Heidelberg March 2nd 2008

We were very lucky with weather last weekend, which was an enjoyable change, but almost too nice because now we are wishing it was spring. Megan, my friend from Australia that I met in Hamburg, flew down for a beautiful sunny weekend in Southern Germany. We had a quiet evening on Friday night as we were both tired from work, but Saturday we were "up and adam" and off to Heidelberg for the day. I hadn't been to Heidelberg since 2002 when i was traveling up to Weimar for the first summer. I also was able to visit in 1998 with my family on our first trip to Germany. The town holds a special place in my memories, it is one of my favorite cities in Germany. Luckily now I only live about 45 min by ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Stockholm County » Stockholm February 22nd 2008

Well as many of you can probably assume, based on my lack of blogs lately, things have been pretty busy around here. I am starting to get into the swing of things with my work schedule, but it doesn’t leave a whole lot of time in the evenings to catch up with everyone. None-the-less, I love my job and am enjoying my new apartment and area of Germany. I am also getting to travel around Europe with work, and I had my first international business trip last week! After a relaxing weekend in Karlsruhe to adjust to my new surroundings, I was off on Monday to Stockholm for work. Pretty crazy to show up your first day of work and be booked to Sweden for the next week! It was a pretty uneventful trip up to ... read more
