They said my wandering days were over. How I laugh now! Seriously though I should stop laughing out loud when I am on my own, it is attracting the wrong kind of attention, and I am not talking about man-love.

We stepped off the plane in Phnom Penh. Cambodia. And everything felt…right. This was good. The previous day had been a struggle. We had packed quickly and caught the last bus from Khao Lak to Phuket Town. We had asked to be let off 30km before the town at the junction for the airport, but sped by all the way into town despite out protests. Getting off the bus, we were swamped by touts and taxis, claiming the only way to the airport was to shell out for a cab. We knew they were lying and told them to get lost. We went up to the ticket desk. They were right. Shit. We had a bit of time before our flight though, and decided to eat before swallowing our pride. It looked like a normal restaurant. ... read more

After a long journey through the night with no sleep, we finally arrived at Phuket airport early on Monday morning. We were pretty shattered, in that twilight zone when your body is only been kept conscious by obscene amounts of coffee. Your brain is working so slowly that it feel like you are walking through treacle. We weren’t really sure where we were going, the new Lonely Planet had been unopened. We just stuck a pin in the map of Phuket and chose Karon beach. After checking in we went straight to bed, but frustratingly, sleep just wouldn’t come. There was too much caffeine in our system. We were so desperate for sleep, I got up and went to the pharmacy to get some sleeping pills - which I later found out were Xanex! Needless to ... read more

Well. Kabul was too dangerous, northern India was too cold, and there was no bloody way I was going home. Instead, we got ourselves amazingly cheap flights and are now sunning ourselves in Thailand. We had initially dismissed Thailand as it is currently rainy season and Clare was skeptical of getting a decent job there. However, Clare found a great job, in the best possible location - on the beach! Plus, we found out that rain in Thailand is a little friendlier than India. All we would have to suffer is, at most, a couple of quick cloudbursts a day and the occasional smidgen of cloud. The clouds here are predominantly cumulo-nimbus. You know the ones - small fluffy little affairs that look like a good spot for a sit down and a nice cup of ... read more

It's pissing down outside. I have never seen rain like this in my life. It never stops, it never relents in any little way. It's either just bucketing down or lashing rain with wind too. I am sitting at a computer checking weather forecasts and flights to Sri Lanka, back to Goa, north to Rajasthan, to the Andaman Islands, any bloody place even a little drier than here. Clare starts work in a week, and so do I in a way, and we want at least some sunshine before we do. Monsoon has arrived, a week ahead of schedule, drenching everything in its formidable path. We had planned to spend a few lazy days exploring the backwaters of Kerala, before getting a final blast of sun on the beach in Varkala. They are usually spot on ... read more

I have just spent the most relaxing week of my life in Palolem, a small beach town in the very south of Goa, away from all the package tourism. It took a while to get over the shock of the first day in Mumbai, but we slowly got into it and began to really enjoy the city before we left. We spent our second and third days sightseeing and eating at a leisurely pace. Soon enough it was Wednesday night and after a skinful of beer we entered the seething tumult of Victoria Terminus to board our train to Goa. We were both delighted to be getting to the beach at last, but it felt like our mission in Mumbai was unfinished. We had a lot left we wanted to see and do. A lot of ... read more

I know its horrible when you are sitting in an office looking out at the rain lashing against the windows, and somebody sends you an email from a far away and sunny paradise. I have been that person. But now, it's my turn. There's a new sheriff in town and he's sunburnt. It was nice to be back in Dublin for a few months and see everyone, but its great to be on the road again. My world tour hasn't gone exactly as planned. Originally, I was going to spend 2 months in South America before flying to Australia to work and save for the next leg of my trip. Then Austin decided to join me in Brazil, the downward spiral began and 2 months turned into 4. Clare joined me in September just after Austin ... read more

The following takes place in mid July. Any similarity between the characters mentioned here and actual real people is intended. *** Clint and Brian, Brian and Clint, where do I start? Clint is certainly an interesting character. He seems to have this dual ability to simultaneously spot a sanctimonious fool, and then say the thing that will push their buttons straight off. He met this Kiwi girl who, on hearing he was from Canada, immediately said "Oh, thats where they club all the seals." Clints response was majestic. "If anyone tries to take my seal clubbing rights away, I will go fuckin crazy." "I remember the first time I clubbed a baby seal, I was 6 years old. My dad held him down while I smacked him, and my mom held the camcorder, it was fuckin ... read more

So we are gonna skip forward a little bit to now, and we will rewind the tape later. To satisfy your demands for more of Clint & Brian I have included two pictures, one of Clint wearing his favourite sock, and one of me and Brian relaxing in the bar. Neither have anything to do with this story, but I like this picture of Brian, because it is before he started rotting. In Santiago now. Ok thats the fast forward done. I call Victor the Mexican. You might remember Victor from such blogs I havent written yet as "Buenos Aires saves a peno in the last minute" (Coming Soon). So, I call Victor. Then, I meet Victor. On the way back to his place, he asks me if I want to grab a few beers and ... read more

The Lost Blogs - Episode 1 Rio - The Greatest City On Earth (First 2 weeks in July or so) *** I am sitting in my snowboarding gear watching all of my fellow inmates leave the hostel one by one, grinning in anticipation of the most favourable boarding conditions in quite some time. I however, due to a monetary mix up of sorts, cannot join them. In the winter in Bariloche (it is winter here yes), there are really only two things you can do on your own if you are not going up the mountain. Sleep or drink. I got twelve hours sleep last night so I fear it is the wine for me. Sigh. I guess it is time then, to fill in the blogblanks of the last 2 months or so. Starting with ... read more

Not so much as peep for over a month. The brazen cheek! Well it has been an action packed month, filled with some serious lows, but many, many highs. I will be posting 8 or so blogs over the next couple of weeks and I hope not to get so far behind again. So, as a brief taster, coming to a blog near you soon are the following: 1. Rio - The Greatest City on Earth. The Honourable Charlie Fellowes. Clubbing in the favela and line dancing to hip hop. Scoring he greatest goal of my life on Copacabana beach. Hangliding over the city and landing on Ipanema beach. Waking up beside a severed bull´s head. The greatest practical joke of all time, and, Clint. 2. Ilha Grande, Bow Down Before Your New God & El ... read more
