Northern Baja and into California and towards home - Last Trip Post We changed our plans and decided against the back road short-cut. With the amount of rain that the area had been getting over the past week the only safe place to ride was on pavement. Even the pull-offs on the side of road were treacherous with inches of silty mud. I was even worried about the couple of miles of construction I knew we had to go through leaving Ensenada. Turned out the construction was not a problem, so we rode straight thru to Tecate and a little further before stopping at a family resort in the mountains. Another totally empty resort meant a great deal on a cute little cabin WITH heat and hot water. Getting there is when our plans to go ... read more

Heading back north It took us one day - 300 km to get to Guerrero Negro - 300km. We left Mulege early in the morning, rolling the bikes out of the courtyard and into the street before starting them up - so we didn’t wake other guests. Rode the 60 or so km to Santa Rosalia before stopping for breakfast. The road back over the twisty mountain roads and then across the desert to San Ignacio was road already traveled, but on this day it was different. On our way tsouth, we travelled that part of the road later in the day, and for me anyways, my mind was focusing on our destination - the beach at Bahia Conception. Now, it is early in the morning and we are on the return trip. We know this ... read more

Finally - “the” Beach - Playa el Burro We woke up early - and suddenly by a hundred or so birds - pelicans, sea ducks and NOISY seagulls, feeding on little fish in schools along the shore - 20 feet or so from our palapa (that is a palm topped, open sided shelter from the sun). To be honest, I thought they were attacking the two food bags I had hung up on one of the palapa poles closest to the shore, it was so close. We totally relaxed into a lay about day. After Dainius took about 500 pictures of pelicans feeding. During the day we met our great neighbours -local residents who live here for six months of the year. They loaned us two beach chairs, a little table, and a cooler to keep ... read more

Viscaino Desert then to San Ignacio We stayed 4 nights in Bahia de Tortugas. The second day we got invited by Jose to go out fishing again, this time in a small boat, but we declined and decided to ride right out to the end of the peninsula - just to have been there. It was about 35 km each way, with a side trip to another little beach on the way back. The desert is so beautiful. The third day we road a couple more of the dirt back roads around the bay, going to Malarimo on our own and then to Rincon and Clambay. Rincon is a lobster fishing port. There are 3 fishing cooperatives in the Tortuga area and only they are allowed to fish lobster and abalone in the area. The other ... read more

Guerrero Negro to Bahia de Tortugas Date: ‘not sure, it was a week or so ago, and we are really starting to lose track of time - FINALLY!‘ We did go on a whale watching outing in a panga from Guerrero Negro. It was a little expensive, but so great to spend four hours on the water with the wind and sea spray kissing our faces. And we did see whales. None were breaching but they were impressive. It’s too bad all the pictures just look like big rough rocks in the water. I took a couple of teeny movies with my camera, they give a better sense, but just barely. We left Guerrero on the 24th of January, leaving early anticipating a long,100 km stretch of dirt road before the end of the day. There ... read more

Only 3 days but whew, I am now the uber riding chick… or at least I would be if I had gotten out of first gear a little more often. The destination was Bahia San Luis Gonzaga. The first ninety kilometres to Puertocitos and slightly beyond were slick new pavement. Then the road ended. I mean seriously ended. First it went from finished pavement to just a first layer clearly waiting for a finishing layer. Then the black ended, and so did the nice flat wide highway. Seven or eight big boulders painted with tar and placed across the road indicated the end, and it dropped down about 25 feet at a 25 degree slope of rough gravel to some construction roads. A bit of scouting over the facing hill and we realized the actual road, ... read more

Yeehoo, January 7th was our first full day on the bikes - and a best day ever! Cool this morning, leaving Monterey, sort of like a good summer day in Yukon. Got our first view of ocean waves, with a kid walking barefoot in the surf, then saw the sign that all motorcyclists love, the twisty black line on an orange sign with “next 75 miles” after it. Really twisty, we went along the Big Sur coast, past Esalen, surf crashing against rocks, 20mph curves after curves after curves. We were driving in an ocean fog, enough visibility for driving but not for vistas beyond a half a kilometer. About a third of the way in, just after Alicia, the curves smoothed out a bit, allowing more smooth transition and steady speed one to the other, ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Inside Passage January 7th 2009

It has now been a week since we left Whitehorse. On the 29th of Dec we got up early, swept the snow out of the truck and from off of and between the motorcycles, loaded gear, then to Skagway to catch the ferry. Way too much good food and beer - that would be burger, fish and fries with double chocolate stout and spruce tip ale at the Alaska Brewing Company. (Sorry if I get wordy on the food aspects of our trip - I am a frustrated restaurant reviewer). Weather: Cold -30C leaving Whse, -17F in Skagway with a biting wind. On the ferry - Alaska Marine Highway System - M/V Malaspina we went to be so early the first night, I was awake and roaming the ship at 5 a.m. Really a relaxing trip. ... read more
