Noodling!!! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City
Traditionally, Sunday is a day of rest and for me that was very much the case today as Byron and I spent most of the day watching the Australia v South Africa one day international, in between intermittent dips in the pool and 'noodling'. For all you non water lovers out there, noodling is a great way to have fun, exercise and enjoy the water...you just hook your arms over it for buoyancy (isn’t she a singer???) and away you go. I think it should be made an Olympic sport...the 100m Noodle, 200m Noodle and the Freestyle Noodle all have potential [View Full Entry]

Tonight was very eventful. Firstly, I took myself forward to the 80s Party Night at the Tapas Bar in town which was pretty bizarre actually. The music as ever was awesome which is really no surprise considering I am an Eighties nostalgist...they even played Men Without Hats 'Safety Dance' too which was really insane!! I so love that song and the video is almost as crazy as Jo and I what with maypole dancing and dwarf exploitism...Big S's Everyone wahoo!!! Unfortunately, there were not many people in to do the big S's (cue record slowing to a stop)! You know when [View Full Entry]

This morning I awoke and ventured into the City Centre to visit the Cairns Museum which was fascinating nostalgia wise...I learnt quite a lot about the history and people, though my favourite piece of information just has to be that WomenTeachers in 1925 were not allowed to hang around Ice Cream Parlours...WHY!!!!! I have a few theories...one is that they might get cold thus will not be able to hold the chalk though I guess the real reason is something to with meeting men combined with sucking on cone techniques. Also and equally fascinating was the walk back to the hostel [View Full Entry]

Woke up at 6.50am which when you come to think about it, really is a stupid time to be waking up at whilst on vacation. I think it's because my two Swedish roomies were up and about preparing to go diving and snorkling respectively...I had a 'snorkel' back in the 70's, it was blue and had a fur lined hood that went rancid when it got wet, imagine floating on the surface observing fishies wearing that...it's just not safe and the EHO would have to condemn it or better still have a warning notice inside 'not to be worn in rain'!!! I surfaced at nine and once again, it's another beautiful day. I caught the early bus into town and once there, I proceeded to purchase a return bus ticket to Palm Cove. Public transport actually seems pretty reasonable pricewise and enroute, we encountered the Tapukai Aboringinal Centre... a useful piece of information especially as it saves me $10 doing it my way!! Palm Cove is a lovely beach area, complete with Palms (obviously) Jelly Fish, and other uninvited marine life if the red danger flags were anything to go by...crikey seems an appropriate word somehow!! It was really nice just to [View Full Entry]

I wake up at nine to bright sunlight streaming in through the window, the rain has relinquished for the moment so I have grabbed my camera and gone into town. My first visit was to the Cairns Gallery which was pretty interesting as it goes, the highlight must have been coloured stick men painted by a five year old I think!! David and I then went to the lagoon which was surrounded with scantily clad Aussie babes and Baywatchesque lifeguards before finally going to Cold Rock...an Ice Cream emporium where I pigged out on a tub of Vanilla, Coffee, Cookie and [View Full Entry]

Tropical storm Charlotte is still a long way off Darwin but this morning we suffered the first deluge of rain from above associated with it resulting in a large pond forming outside our rear window, at one point I thought I saw the Cambridge University Coxed 8s whizz past in practising for the Boat Race (maybe not huh!!) It has been raining constantly for the past 12 hours so I spent most of the morning checking out alternative activities until this weather system disappears such as what's on at the cinema, local museums and galleries...though 'Rubber Duck Racing' is possibly more [View Full Entry]

I slept really well last night as the bed is just so comfy, so much so, that after my morning breakfast of a bowl of Rice Crispies and cup of coffee, I returned back to it for a three hour Top up Kip!! Batteries fully recharged, I went for my first 'walkabout' across to the Espanade and then to locate the nearest general store which is literally just across the road and purchased a packet of chocolate biscuits, barbequed rib crisps and a can of lynx due to my last one running out mid squirt which at the time just so [View Full Entry]

The Flight to Darwin was kinda eventful because not only were my two stalkers sitting two rows behind me monitoring my every move, but there was also a significant amount of turbulence in the air to keep us weary passengers amused. After an involuntary game of musical chairs (disembarking only to re-embark immediately) and admiring cork hats...the flight continued its merry way to Cairns, Queensland where upon I suffered another life first...having my suitcase checked!!! I really wish I could have had something really exciting in there as opposed to clothes, toiletries and dirty laundry (which [View Full Entry]

It's my final day at the Miramar so having settled my room bill and then checked out, I dumped my case with the bell boys and took a stroll to the Internet Cafe to check my emails and converse with the world...before realising my plan was flawed as it was only 3am in the UK, and not surprisingly no one was online!! I then proceeded for my final lunch date at the Highlander where I enjoyed a huge serving of Fish and Chips and two cold refreshing beers before making my way back along the riverside to the hotel...and the Brass [View Full Entry]
