Day 104……14/07/2012 Well I did not wake up a genius after spending the night in the Fairbanks University halls of residence, the women’s halls I might add, but as Lynne was with me I cannot use the tale back at work that I spent the night in the girls dorm now can I. We decided to stay another night and take a look around the City. The first stop was to the local Harley Davidson dealership, which by the way is their farthest north shop in all the world, well so Lynne’s new T shirt says on the front. Next we visited the downtown area and waterfront, well that’s another hour taken care of which included coffee, it is a nice place there’s just not that much of it. We then rode the fourteen miles or ... read more

Day 97……07/07/2012 So todays the day, the only day of the whole trip where we have a specified appointment, and where we definitely have to be somewhere. The bike is loaded with a revised selection of luggage and essential items, having already discussed the needs and priority of many of the items that did not make the list. The lack of any protest by Lynne about what she could or could not take was a little concerning, but I will put it down to her having dibs on any emergency space for a few T shirts along the way. The only problem now is the fact that it is only 1100am and the ferry does not sail until 6pm, so a bit of a hang around with the kind permission of the motel owners, in their ... read more

Day 90……30/062012 A slight miscalculation on the days that we have been here, seems its today that we are halfway through the trip as opposed to yesterday, oh well it was an easy mistake to make given that we have lost all track of time anyway. Well today is another pretty much do nothing day, except that is for readying ourselves for a Weasel party that we have been invited to later this evening at Sue’s house. So I sat and finished off last week’s blog, which you may have already read by now, and Lynne got her head stuck into one or two of those “OK” “Hello” type magazines that seem to be worldwide, you know the ones “I lost 300lb just by eating the packaging that my Ryvita comes in” So we get to ... read more

Day 83……23/06/2012 Well unfortunately as predicted the weather has remained the same as yesterday, and the once bright sunshine and blue skies has been replaced by a more overcast and showery forecast. So we will be staying put again, this at least will give Lynne the opportunity to keep up her in depth knowledge of those white whizzy things that do the washing, but alas I fear that due to lack of practice she will now require complete retraining on our return with the whooshy contraption that picks up dust off the carpet. You know I am joking right, ouch that really hurt. Another reason for not wanting to go to far in any real damp weather was my front tyre, I had left it, and left it, due to the very dry weather we had ... read more

Day 76……16/06/2012 Today we will visit Virginia City, an old gold mining town that has pretty much kept most of its originality intact. More gold and silver had been mined there than anywhere else in the US. The morning was once again bright and sunny, and the temperature was on the climb, we rode the 26 miles high up into the mountains to the southeast of Reno on a superb newly tarmacked winding road. The views back across the wide valley floor below and away west to the Tahoe Mountains where stunning, there was even a little snow still on the higher slopes. The gold from Virginia City had pretty much funded the construction of San Francisco, with the mine owners investing heavily in the regions emerging commerce. But that was many years ago, today the ... read more

Day 69……09/06/2012 There is a weather phenomenon here on the California coast, and it’s called the “June gloom” and it is exactly how it sounds, gloomy misty weather. Well that is what it is like this morning, after weeks of clear blue skies, the one day that we needed sunshine for our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, the weather’s naff. The forecast is for it to be sunny in Los Angeles which is where we plan to go today, just not here yet. I suppose that we really should not be so ungrateful, seeing what beautiful weather we have been having and besides it could be much worse, we could be riding in England and by now would probably have drowned. A ten minute ride and we were at the sea, and although the views ... read more

Day 62……02/06/2012 Well there had been a few clouds bubbling up over the mountains last night, and after two weeks of not seeing anything but clear blue skies, they were a little concerning. So it was with a little trepidation that at 0700, we pulled back the curtains. Where did they all go? Not a cloud to be seen in any direction, a crystal clear morning, with terrific views over the mountains. This was good news, but meant that we would now have to get our skates on and get going. Our route today will take us out of the higher regions of Utah and down into the much lower plains of Southern Nevada, State number 20, and with that will come much higher temperatures. By 0730 we were fuelled and on our way. As we ... read more

Day 56……26/05/2012 A leisurely start to the day today, in preparation for this morning’s fun and games. We have been offered the chance to go shooting in the hills above where Mark and Paula live, and as the only thing I have ever shot off before, is my mouth, I am a little excited at the prospect of getting some expert tuition on handling, firing, and a little of the history behind the various weapons Mark owns. So I have the gun belt on with the Peacemaker holstered, and the pickup is filled nearly to the brim with ordnance and munitions, and Lynne’s got a big coat and a furry hat on, so we are ready for the off. After 20 minutes or so we are at a clearing in the hills, hopefully far enough away ... read more

Day 49……19/05/2012 Well as predicted, it was just a kick back day today, and I will struggle to find anything to say. Lynne caught up with her cousin Sophie who is eight months pregnant, and has not seen for around thirteen years, and I just generally got in the way while Brian, Sophie’s husband gave their pool a bit of a spruce up. He had this great little vacuum cleaner type machine that attached itself to the bottom of the pool, and then just merrily went about its business scrubbing away. But that’s all I can say about today really. Day 50……20/05/2012 Today we will visit the Saguaro National Park which is situated just to the west of Tucson, where there are literally thousands of the famous cacti of the same name. We were warned to ... read more

Day 42……12/05/2012 After yesterday’s fine end to a rather damp start, we were more than a little disappointed to see low clouds and mist clinging to the mountains that were definitely visible last night. Today we plan to ride a 275 mile loop around the region, including the Big Bend National Park, and the Rio Grande river road, as with all trips where beautiful scenery is involved the sun is a definite prerequisite, but things did not look good so far. We decided to go with what we had and set off to get fuel in the small town of Marathon some thirty miles away, once there we were more than pleased to see a ribbon of blue over the mountains to the south, exactly the direction in which we were heading. With each mile we ... read more
