Leaving King Fisher Camp we travelled through Bowthorn Station towards Hell39s Gates Roadhouse so named because in the old days services and police patrols went no further than here and once South or East of Hell39s Gates you were on your own Today it39s just a lonely roadhouse with an airstrip over the road and fuel that cost 2 per litre. We needed their toilet so bought some obligato

Thursday 28th JuneNo we were not hightailing it towards some of the Colonel39s secret recipe as nice as some of that would be right now but heading along the back tracks toward Kingfisher Camp on the Nicholson River. It was only 113kms today but that distance took us just over 3.5 hours to complete much of it traversed both Lawn Hill and Bowthorn Stations and Jen got her exercise jumping

Monday 25 June Wed 27 JuneLeaving the beautiful environs of Gregory Downs and our camp on the Leichardt River we headed West the 90 odd ks to Adeles Grove our home for the next 3 days. The initial part of the trip was a dust filled environment as we competed on the road with the three trailer road trains of the Century Zinc Mine but thankfully we have made some inroads into reducing dust

Leaving Weipa

Thursday 21st June The plan was to make Musgrave Station on this day but again car trouble plagued us thankfully we became aware of the trouble in Coen and we made repairs there but things could have been much worse if we had been on the track to Normanton as we had intended. We noticed oil coming out of the left hand front wheel hub and suspected a wheel bearing we parked under a tree at the c

June 8 June 15 We overnighted at the campground at the Jardine River and were up early to catch the first ferry of the day. After the rigors of the OTL the final dirt roads heading towards Bamaga and Seisia the most Northerly towns on the cape were a delight though the ever present clouds of dust were with us. There are several communities around these towns all different indigenous commun

Bramwell Junction to the Jardine River.

7th June Having had a go at Palm Creek the night before and not wanting to damage the cruiser anymore or the camper trailer on it or Gunshot Creek on the southern part of the Overland Telegraph Line track we instead took the Southern Bypass Road all the way up to where it crosses the OTL at Fruit Bat Falls. From here we took the track down to the falls we had passed almost noone on the Bypass

Cooktown and Beyond

Cooktown named obviously after the famed explorer himself is the place where Captain James and his crew beached the Endeavour in the estuary and effected repairs after coming to grief on the outer reef. The river on which the town is situated bears the name of HerHis Majestys famous barque and this quaint little frontier town owns an important part of Australian history. Apart from being the g

Cairns to Cooktownn

The incessant rain stopped as we left Atherton and we cruised the hour or so into Cairns for a few days rest staying at the Cool Waters Caravan Park the long range forecast had indicated more rain and so we were very careful about choosing a camp spot. We specifically inquired whether the spot we had chosen would flood in heavy rain no was the reply so we set up. Little were we to know that it

Hi Eveyone it39s been a while since the last blog and we have travelled many kilometres since then but I39ll backtrack to where I left off and slowly make my way to present time.Next stop was Winton famed as being the place where Banjo Patterson penned the words to Australia39s iconic song Waltzing Matilda the museum in town is a testament to all things outback In more recent times

It39s nice to be finally back on the road after the considerable difficulties of the last 6 weeks. I39m not going to dwell on the problems but suffice to say we now have a new camper trailer and a new engine in the 80 series. So fingers crossed our problems are now behind us We39d like to thank Jen39s parents Leon and Sandra for giving us a home for a number of weeks and feeding us w

Never Never Never Give Up

The late and great WS Churchill addressed the graduating class at Eton with the famous words I39ve borrowed for our title and certainly life requires us to show tenacity and endurance if we are to succeed at any worthwhile purpose or endeavour. With this in mind I will now reflect upon the last couple of weeks of our around Australia adventure and describe what we have experienced and why we

Wedding Day

I know this is a travel blog site dedicated to our Big Lap in 2012 but I am going to be a bit narcissistic and commit this entry completely to our Wedding Day which occurred just over a week ago on Saturday March 3 in beautiful Coffs Harbour on the NSW North Coast. In fact I alluded to our wedding on our first post because in reality it is the initiating event that starts the Big Lap for real.It

Well we are holed up at Lighthouse Caravan Park in Burnett Heads about 15km39s from Bundaberg enjoying some Summer weather. We have a beaut location at the bottom of the park overlooking the marina and an oval next door. Weather has been in the high twenties but with a nice breeze off the ocean which keeps things bearable The breeze has continued into the night which has been a bonus. The trip

Up up and away

Welcome to our site where we are going to chronicle the adventures we have throughout 2012 on our Big Lap of Australia. We left our home on January 7 and have spent the last few weeks in our camper trailer ironing out all the bugs and there have been a few. Thanks to some amazing parents in Toowoomba and Bomaderry we have had plenty of support as well as warm showers and tasty food to ease us
