Thursday: London to Delhi I don't particularly like traveling in airplanes, they never seem to have enough leg room so it was an extremely pleasant surprise when we found ourselves in business class on the British airways flight to Delhi. The two of us had a sort of room containg 2 seats, televisions, tables, drawers etc and we could almost cut ourselves off from everyone else. If only all air travel could be like this. Delhi airport is big, shiny and new. They are very proud of the fact it is the 2nd biggest airport in the world or may have been 2nd best in the world, it wasn't clear. We arrived at 11pm and were very pleased to be able to change some of our vast hoard of £s into rupees immediately (you can't bring ... read more

Saturday. London - Tokyo Frankly the suburbs of Tokyo looked a bit chaotic and bleak as we sped through them into the city on the Narita Airport express train. Miles and miles of low rise housing were crammed together on a flat plain and covered by a network of wires. We saw very few brick or stone buildings which, to our eyes, gave the vast swathes of housing a rather temporary look. Of course the area is prone to earthquakes so the buildings, or at least the older ones, were not going to be big, heavy structures. There are very few trees to break up the harsh view, I suspect they were removed to fit more houses in. This crowded scene was repeated around Japan because although the population of Japan is twice that of the ... read more

Cuba Wednesday When we left Havana airport we realized immediately that we were in Cuba and could not be in any other country in the world. Why not? Because of the time-slip scene of colourful and huge American automobiles from the 1950s which chug and growl down every road. I knew they still existed in Cuba, but I thought they would be scarce sight. But no. They were everywhere. There were other cars, of course, and even some modern cars, but the "old timers" as they are called, are the ones which grab your attention. It was a unique and fascinating scene. But more on cars later. On the drive into Havana city from the airport we passed many of the concrete buildings, often painted Cuba-flag blue, which were built during the “Russian” era when Cuba ... read more

Syria Saturday It was not a good start to the trip. In fact it was without doubt the worst ever. Things were a bit fraught, anyway because my mother-in-law was in hospital with a broken pelvis and my wife, understandably, didn't know if she could leave her. So there was an air of uncertainty as I packed the suitcases. Then, as I lifted the a suitcase using a hand held weighing scale, the scale broke and 17kg of hard plastic suitcase fell directly onto my toe. My first thought was that my poor toe was broken and that I would have to go to casualty and therefore miss the flight. My second thought was 'Ow. That really hurts' and my third thought was 'am I going to faint'. I didn’t faint and after 15 minutes of ... read more

Kerala, India Wednesday The first stop on our India trip is the shopping mall called Dubai where we change our from one Emirates airplane to another for the final leg to Thiruvananthapuram which is the capital of Kerala. It is easy to see why Emirates is one of the best airlines in the world. Apart from the service, the entertainment system, the leg room and the staff, when they dim the cabin lights beautiful stars appear in the cabin ceiling. It’s only a little thing but it has stuck in my mind. But the best part is watching the forward camera as the plane lands because it is like sitting in the cockpit. I have decided to turn vegetarian while in India for a number of reasons: 1. Vegetarian food is sure to be varied and ... read more

Indochina Discovery Thursday With the fires of financial turmoil burning furiously, fanned by a hysterical press, it was good time to escape to the other side of the world. We flew with Malaysian Airlines who, I had discovered, are one of the top rated airlines in the world. And they were very good, but even their high rating could not improve the indifferent food. Adding lots of salt and closing your eyes when eating helps, I find. I have come to the conclusion that the road between the airport and the city it serves is no indicator of what the country will be like. And the more dictatorial and centralised the government the starker the difference. In China the road very often was beautifully manicured, flowers everywhere and no potholes. Its all about giving a good ... read more

Tuesday Heathrow Terminal 1 is crowded as usual but just about bearable. What is less bearable is the departures board which stubbornly refuses to say anything except “please wait” next to our flight to Rekjavik. Flights which should have been taking off long after us go through the “Go to gate 99”, “boarding” then “last call”. And we still wait. It was a late flight anyway - not due to arrive in Iceland until nearly midnight, so now we were not going to get into bed until the early hours. Our airplane finally slid in to Heathrow and we took off nearly 2 hours late. Add my hacking cough, tight seats, drinks you have to pay for and an indifferent airline meal and I was not in the best of moods. We finally got into bed ... read more

China Thursday 18 October I had many preconceptions about China. I had been to another communist country, USSR, in 1976 and memories of that grim unhappy place were still with me. The buildings were grey and austere and matched the people as they trudged through the snow after the few sad items in the few sad shops. I knew China would be different but I wasn't prepared for how different. Shanghai airport is only 5 years old and very very big. As we got off the bus which had brought us from the plane it stretched for what seemed like a mile each side of me. This was very impressive and inside it was bright clean and airy. I had expected something rather older, dirtier and greyer. My first preconception immediately washed away. The benefit of ... read more

Friday Night Abu Dhabi airport is really something to behold. It is like being in a giant green and blue mushroom. Not a single straight line anywhere and it has a very organic feel to it. It is the hub of Etihad Airways, so people of all shapes, colours and sizes pass through its colourful doors. Muslim women in complete black, men in not much more then loin clothes, backpackers in t-shirts and women in colourful saris. Why were we there? We were on our way to Sri Lanka. Saturday I was very impressed with Etihad Airways and I would highly recommend them. They are a new airline and as the national carrier of UAE they are proud of their service and are trying hard, and as far as I can see, succeeding, to match their ... read more
