Not so sure about what looks like a pile of black beetles, though. The colourful FRUITS are amazing, can't wait to try some of them. Last year, my husband and I went on a grand tour of Europe and part of what made it special was trying all the different foods in each country. One of the highlights was eating Black Forest Cake in the Black Forest area. We are about to go to Egypt and Jordan, so there will be more delights to sample. I'll have to put some pictures up for you to see. |

In fact looking at the collection Africa is obviously at the center of human culture for good reason. My point is Ali your portrait was a good shot of not only a white person in western garb- but its a great shot of probably what most of us represent! However, I will say in my defense that trying to swim in 25-30mph flow, with giant waves crashing overhead, hydraulics sucking you down and bouncing you off the bottom (thru 3 sets of rapids) small boulders crashing and moving on the same river bottom - all the while trying to avoid crashing into larger ones coming at you at that same 25mph, does not leave one much time to swim!!! Ok! - enough of my escuses!! AND you are so right - what a fantastic trip, with you making it all the better. We loved being with you that first day and were very sad when the guides took you from us (which is of course, the reason we flipped!). Great pics as well. Thanks for the memories!!!! |

| 27th June 2009 jericho | about releif resevoir - From: Emigrant Wilderness: Fall 2006 the equipment you saw there was used to build a tramway for supplies to build the dam. if you look into the water to the side of the dam you can see more under water. also there is a man made cave in a large rock formation close to the dam this is were the men camped while building the dam. there is rumored to be a rail line at the bottom of the lake too.I spent alot of time there my first solo trip was at age 12. i love it there but havent been in about 12 years. |

Found your website..very informative, beautiful pictures, and releived some of our concerns about their personal safety about backpacking/hostelling their way through Chile, then Bolivia. Peru..eventually ending up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before they fly home on May 1. We live in Winnipeg, Canada, smack dab in the middle of the country..we had -40 degree weather here last week (doesn't matter if it's Fahrenheit or Celsius..it's the same..COLD...that's what they left behind and arrived in Chile to 86 F ...that's okay...we've got 38 F, +3C today..any advice for 4 adventurous 20 yr old Canadian boys backpacking Chile? I am a guide in Patagonia and visit the park frequently. Many days are simply perfect, with mostly sun and hardly any wind. Others can be pretty harsh. But you can't say that the universal condition is rain and strong winds, just that you need to be prepared for strong variations and temperature ranges. Enjoy your visit. |

With all the scientific research and technological advancement, I'm optimistic that someday mankind will invent or discover other energy source that is clean, renewable, sustainable, that yield same power parallel to hydrocarbon-based fuels and has minimal/zero impact on our eco-system. There's definitely a huge problem with the world's current economic model which is base on capitalism and consumerism. I don't have the answers to global economic crisis, environmental, political and social issues. But I do know that balance and harmony is imperative in all aspects. Stop living in excess and adopt a sustainable way of life without destroying the environment. Like you, I probably also think too much and can keep going on and on, on what's wrong in the world...so I'm going to shut up now and leave you with your thoughts :)......cheers ! Jo |

Some things that may skew the potentially gloomy outlook. The better educated and better resourced a population the more likely it is to have a stable or declining birth rate - look at the western European countries where growth is attributed to immigration. The US is reliant on imported fossil fuels - which are no longer necessarily cheap - this will provide the impetus for the development of technologies such as fuel cells and renewables. We probably will continue to have a hydrocarbon based economy for a long time - just the source of these will have to change - the energy carried in petrol is just immense. Totally agree that as a species we cannot continue our current consumption and expectations without devastating our planet leaving a nightmare world for our direct descendants. |

We live in Sacramento CA and it sounds like you are from the area as well (Yosemite, etc.) We have a short time frame on the southern island and I figured you could give us some great advice. We don't like doing paid tours for days on end, would rather have the experience doing a trip ourselves, but we are very open to day tours like the helicopter one, etc. What would you recommend. Shasta Photography I never used to use filters, but a circular polarizer is sometimes essential to landscapes. It removes reflected light- hich takes out he reflections in lakes, rivers and ponds and also deepens the blue of the sky. It also filters out light and a poor quality polarizer makes the image less sharp. I heard a professional photographer say once "why would I cover up my $1000 lens witha $10 filter?" and it makes sense. But for a wide angle and lots-of-sky picture like 'land of the free'? A polarizer made all the difference! I use photoshop, but not heavily. I noticed after I began using the Nikon d80(or any other high quality camera) the colors are more vivid and balanced, thus less need for Photoshop. The other issue of a white-washed sky or a too-dark foreground is the central issue of any good landscape shot. professionals use an ND Gradient Filter- its like a lens of a sunglasses but with a gradual fade. This way you can compose your shot on the foreground, and the ND gradient filters out the overly bright sky to balance the image. All the juicy landscape photographers of the world use ND gradients with incredible success. On travelblog you should check out Cumberland Sausage- many of his incredible sunset shots are not possible without an ND gradient! Try this trick next time when taking pictures- squint your eyes. It takes out the detail, yet will show you if there is too much contrast to capture the scene without an ND gradient. You can also take 2 shots- one metered on the sky and one on the foreground, then merge the 2 in photoshop. Its the poor man's ND gradient!! :) |

| 12th July 2007 Stephen Paul | My Position from the High Horse - From: Torres del Paine Part 3: Salto Grande, Lago Nordenskjöld, Chilean Patagonia Travelblog is filled with people travelling the globe, true "Hardcore Travellers" coloring the visited countries map more red than 10 frogs in a blender. I am not one of them. Self righteous travellers see their way as the only way, whereas I see my style of travelling as only right for me. Strong opinions make for great reading. For me, authenticity in travelling comes from two things- Attempting to learn about the language/culture of the place you are visiting, and learning about the native flora and fauna as well. Im not the first to talk about the Gringo Trail and Gringo Travellers using the America's as a checkerboard to jump their way across two continents- it is quite a well documented phenomenon! I wouldn't expect anyone from Britain or its territories(self-rightousness par excellence) to understand what America is all about. Yes I am white, yes I am from California and yes I claim a stronger bond to Latin and South American countries than anyone in Australia, Germany or England. The Spanish Empire and its ensuing effects on cultures are still being felt today here in the America's. A 18th century Spanish Mission that turned Indians into slaves is 1 km away from my home as I write this, half of the community I live with speaks spanish, and I see America as one family with many branches- North America, Latin America and South America. You said I am an American, and it's true- But I am no more American than Mexicans, Columbians, Brazilians or Chileans. One America, divided. Most people would go to Spain and marvel at the architecture- I would be disgusted at the opulence built on the backs of millions of slaves and Spanish subjects. For this reason yes, I see myself as coming from a position slightly more authentic than most travellers not attempting to learn any Spanish and transiently travelling through Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Ecuador. For me travelling in America, be it North or South, is something far more meaningful than a trip around the world. Utopia, Conquest, Subjugation, Extermination, Rebirth. These are the social scars common in every inch of American soil- from Alaska to Patagonia. |

And I didn't make a gringo mistake by having my wallet stolen from my tent in the middle of the night, it was the thief who had a lapse of ethics. I take short vacations because I have a career where I work 50 hours a week. All my travelling is done on the side, in addition to working, saving and living in the real world. Im not a 23 year old student freshly out of school with time to burn and no roots to pull up. "self-right·eous adjective confident of one's own righteousness, esp. when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others." Yes, I would say that is generally true as I am rarely tolerant of the behavior of people I find offensive to other cultures. And frankly, I dont know how I could enjoy my vacations anymore than I already do! The view is nice from the saddle. |

Good pictures are all about timing, use of light and composition- not the camera. The hike to Ropi Lake can be made substantially shorter by taking the Echo Lake ferry, which only runs in the summer. |
