| 2nd December 2009 rosie7r | Hola! - From: Torres del Paine Part 1: "The Camelid Tragedy", Chilean Patagonia I have been living in Vina del Mar since September, and i am planning a trip to the south and I would love to camp a lot along the way, especially in Torres del Paine. Im traveling solo as well, and would love some advice. Im not planning to do any major trekking, only two nights in the park. Do you think its safe to go at it alone? And if so, which hike would you recommend? Thanks for the story, the pictures are beautiful. Peace and Love, Rosie |

| 9th September 2009 dragonlady | Food memories - From: My Most Favorite Food From TravelBlog.................................... I loved looking at the foods. Most look so good you can smell them! Not so sure about what looks like a pile of black beetles, though. The colourful FRUITS are amazing, can't wait to try some of them. Last year, my husband and I went on a grand tour of Europe and part of what made it special was trying all the different foods in each country. One of the highlights was eating Black Forest Cake in the Black Forest area. We are about to go to Egypt and Jordan, so there will be more delights to sample. I'll have to put some pictures up for you to see. |

| 26th August 2009 Ron Haller | Awsome Collection - We invite you - From: My Most Favorite Landscapes From TravelBlog.......................... Stephen, I escaped today from the tensions of the day looking through your portfolio of travel moments. As an editor and owner of an online website for couples planning their honeymoons, we struggle with a lack of staff talented and available to capture such moments and share with our couples. We are small and poor, so we are at this time unable to pay fees which would be justifiably due you for your outstanding work. Should you want at any time to share any of your photos for posting on our website, www.HoneymoonersReviewGuide.com, please let me know. We would be honored to highlight you and your bio with an address for viewing. Appreciably Yours, Ron |

| 20th August 2009 anonymous | Memories - From: Torres del Paine Part 2: After the Storm...Chilean Patagonia I travelled to Torres del Paine in 1991 with some mountaineering companions. Your photos bring back memories of a wonderful experience. I was consumed by the beauty and character (as you put it) so much that the climbing experience became secondary to the place. Thank you for jogging those memories with your superb photos! Keep on truckin' Ken P.S. We summitted on El Almirante Nieto but almost constant high winds foiled our efforts on the Torres and the Cuernos. Not to mention the difficulty! K |

| 16th August 2009 Stephen Paul | I had to! - From: My Most Favorite Portraits From TravelBlog............................. I wanted to kind of balance out the countries a bit, but found pictures of Anglo's in day to day life few and far between. In fact looking at the collection Africa is obviously at the center of human culture for good reason. My point is Ali your portrait was a good shot of not only a white person in western garb- but its a great shot of probably what most of us represent! Westerners who have nothing but clothes, a grin, a camera and a desire to see the world. Plus you are the one who had the vision for the site and made the whole thing possible!! |
| 16th August 2009 Ali | Worked a treat :) - From: My Most Favorite Portraits From TravelBlog............................. Great idea - well selected shots ... damn'it - I'm in there :( |
| 15th August 2009 Jake Henderson | I'm eatin' only balls & brains - From: My Most Favorite Food From TravelBlog.................................... When I think of the foods i"ve eaten around the world without taiking pictures, I'm ashamed. You have done a wonerful job of collecting most of my experiences. Although, I must admit some of them were thrown-up in short order. On the other hand, I may have experenced too much of the local brew or vintage at the same time!!!! None-the-less, thank you for the good times and the aftermath that you have assembeled in these pictures. I'm going for a a cheap red, some cheeze of unknown origin, and olives as I end this note. Steven, Thank you for your inspiration.. I'm looking forward to more. Lest you think it isn't important, or that it doesn't matter, I am an old ls geezer who travels several times a year and I wiil use your pictures as the focus for my next several adventures. | 6th August 2009 Bob Currie | Grey Hair and the Tuolumne!! - From: Whitewater Rafting the Tuolumne River Gave Me Grey Hair Well Steve, your blog is terrific and describes our trip extraordinaily well, inclusive of my lack of swimming prowess!! However, I will say in my defense that trying to swim in 25-30mph flow, with giant waves crashing overhead, hydraulics sucking you down and bouncing you off the bottom (thru 3 sets of rapids) small boulders crashing and moving on the same river bottom - all the while trying to avoid crashing into larger ones coming at you at that same 25mph, does not leave one much time to swim!!! Ok! - enough of my escuses!! AND you are so right - what a fantastic trip, with you making it all the better. We loved being with you that first day and were very sad when the guides took you from us (which is of course, the reason we flipped!). Great pics as well. Thanks for the memories!!!! |

| 9th July 2009 kkcowgirl | Dam backwards? - From: Emigrant Wilderness: Fall 2006 We go hiking up here often. Great pics! I've always questioned, however, why the dam was built the way it was. It looks backwards...isn't the arch supposed to be pointing into the water it's holding back? I wonder if this was intentional, or a monumental engineering error? |
| 9th July 2009 flyfly | splendid - From: Sierra Forest, Melting Ice, Migratory Birds: Yosemite Photography Wowwww, this is fantastic!! |

| 27th June 2009 jericho | about releif resevoir - From: Emigrant Wilderness: Fall 2006 the equipment you saw there was used to build a tramway for supplies to build the dam. if you look into the water to the side of the dam you can see more under water. also there is a man made cave in a large rock formation close to the dam this is were the men camped while building the dam. there is rumored to be a rail line at the bottom of the lake too.I spent alot of time there my first solo trip was at age 12. i love it there but havent been in about 12 years. |

| 23rd February 2009 Stephen Paul | costs, real and imagined - From: Oops...we did it again! SCUBA diving Channel Islands National Park true- yet look at how some people spend their money. $3 coffees every morning? in 10 months you can pay for the trip. $100 designer shoes? skip buying 2 pair, and buy a ticket to South America. Eating out 3x a week? in 6 months you can be SCUBA diving with sharks. Priorities, priorities! |

| 9th February 2009 Bruce | Not chilly in Chili - From: 2 weeks in Chile, Summer: Chile Valle Central fotos Our son and 3 friends arrived in Santiago Feb. 6 and are now in Temuco visiting fellow Canadians who spend the Canadian winters in Chile, growing canola crops. Found your website..very informative, beautiful pictures, and releived some of our concerns about their personal safety about backpacking/hostelling their way through Chile, then Bolivia. Peru..eventually ending up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before they fly home on May 1. We live in Winnipeg, Canada, smack dab in the middle of the country..we had -40 degree weather here last week (doesn't matter if it's Fahrenheit or Celsius..it's the same..COLD...that's what they left behind and arrived in Chile to 86 F ...that's okay...we've got 38 F, +3C today..any advice for 4 adventurous 20 yr old Canadian boys backpacking Chile? Great site, Bruce |

| 1st February 2009 wayne | Fantastic job !!! - From: 2 weeks in Chile, Summer: Chile Valle Central fotos Hi Steve, just wanted to thank you for all your beautiful pictures of Chile, I'm also Californian like yourself, my wife is from Casablanca Chile, inland from Valparaiso about a half hour. She's there now with her family on vacation..... I lived in chile many years ago and loved it,, the people are wonderful as is the food and the country.. Some day I will probably retire there as it is too expensive here in the USA. Once again beautiful work on your trip and I hope it went great with your gal-pal, the women there are unique and witty... Thanks again.. Wayne. |
| 25th January 2009 golfkat | Thank you - From: Lenga Forests and Lonely Roads: Chilean Patagonia Kudos for your great article, as I enjoyed it immensely. How were the roads? And did you naviate okay with or without Spanish? And what about chains for the car, and cold weather gear for you? Healthy food available? Thanks, Gerry |
| 25th January 2009 golfkat | Very reflective - From: Puerto Natales and Environs, Chilean Patagonia Your story is very reflective and nicely written. Can we get by without too much Spanish? And how about cold weather gear? Did your camera work at all temps? Thanks, Gerry |
| 21st January 2009 Mercurycatcher | Stunning Images - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Stunning crystal clear images, the cold wintry light makes Yosemite look even better at this time of year than the summer months. You should be rightly proud of those photos they are beautiful. Well done! |
| 17th January 2009 Stephen Paul | Blenheim... - From: 4 Days of March in the South Island, Part I: New Zealand Photography The more I reflect, the more I realize I would like nothing more than to settle down in Blenheim! One of the top 3 places with the most sunshine, less than an hours drive to the ocean and the alpine mountains, good wine... :) Boring? Perhaps. A fantastic place to live? YES! |
| 17th January 2009 Stephen Paul | on the contrary - From: Torres del Paine Part 4: The Final Flight, Chilean Patagonia The impresson may be from my blog that the weather was "Bad"... but really if you read previous posts some of the comments about "being here on better terms" had more to do with my wallet being stolen! besides, I fully expected-like anyone should- that going to Torres del Paine, or any other polar region, in the fall would mean cold, rain and snow. Never once did I say 'horrible', 'terrible' or 'bad' when referencing the weather!!! On the contrary my friend vellbruixot, I know that if it wasn't for the rain, cold and wind- I wouldn't have gotten the great pictures or the solitude I had hoped would come from the trip. |
| 17th January 2009 vellbruixot | torres del paine weather - From: Torres del Paine Part 4: The Final Flight, Chilean Patagonia previous poster believes that everyone gets horrible weather in Torres del Paine national park here in Chile. I am a guide in Patagonia and visit the park frequently. Many days are simply perfect, with mostly sun and hardly any wind. Others can be pretty harsh. But you can't say that the universal condition is rain and strong winds, just that you need to be prepared for strong variations and temperature ranges. Enjoy your visit. |
| 15th January 2009 MarcelleDonagh | Amazing spot. - From: 2 days in Zion National Park Zion is incredible. I'd still personally pick Bryce Canyon as the most beautiful park system... but Zion is certainly up there and I understand people who chose it as their favourite. The slot canyons are awesome and its unbelievable how different the different rock formations in the same park are! Love it. |
| 15th January 2009 barrygahan | Beautiful winter - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Can't beat the blue skies in winter, looks great. Nice bear shot, too! |
| 14th January 2009 Karen | - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Awesome photos!!! I've never seen photos of Yosemite as good as these. It makes me want to go there! I've never been there, so I'm adding it to my "Bucket List". |
| 13th January 2009 Snap Shot Stacey | Photo's! - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... What stunning photo's! I especially love 'Enchanting Forest'. We don't really get that kind of thing in much of Oz. Becautiful. |
| 13th January 2009 JintysJourneys | That's a real winter wonderland - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Thanks for cheering me up on a grey English evening. Stunning snowy photos. You're on my recommended list now. |
| 13th January 2009 Stephen Paul | Thanks to All! - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Thank you all for the comments, comments always make me happY! As for the map, it was done on maps.google.com Instructions are on the page, but basically you select a start point, and end point, and then add destinations. you can also drag the destination flags if you want to make it more accurate! |
| 13th January 2009 jose-blog | Map - From: Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Hi there. Great to see your photos of Yosemite in winter. I had a great time there in september but haven't yet posted my blog. I've been trying to draw itinerary lines of my trips on maps with no success. The map of your trip looks great, could you tell me what website you've used and give me a few basic tips on how to do it? Many thanks and best of luck in your journeys. Jose |

| 10th December 2008 aspiringnomad | Just saw this post... - From: Reflections on Deep Geologic Time Glad to see these realisations are percolating down to the mainstream. Though disappointed more people didn't view it... This is a topic I've been passionate about for a few years now. For something a little harder check out Derrick Jensen or John Zerzan, or failing that, send me a PM! |
| 9th December 2008 Johanna | Lester Brown - From: Reflections on Deep Geologic Time I just checked your reference/link on Lester Brown. It looks like he's got the answer to the global issues that humanity is facing today. His book seems like an interesting read. I'll definitely try to read it on my spare time....thanks ! Jo |
| 9th December 2008 Johanna | Nice Blog ! - From: Reflections on Deep Geologic Time It's good to read something insightful for a change. With all the scientific research and technological advancement, I'm optimistic that someday mankind will invent or discover other energy source that is clean, renewable, sustainable, that yield same power parallel to hydrocarbon-based fuels and has minimal/zero impact on our eco-system. There's definitely a huge problem with the world's current economic model which is base on capitalism and consumerism. I don't have the answers to global economic crisis, environmental, political and social issues. But I do know that balance and harmony is imperative in all aspects. Stop living in excess and adopt a sustainable way of life without destroying the environment. Like you, I probably also think too much and can keep going on and on, on what's wrong in the world...so I'm going to shut up now and leave you with your thoughts :)......cheers ! Jo |
| 8th December 2008 Ali | A lot on your mind lately! - From: Reflections on Deep Geologic Time I've been thinking a lot about similar dilemmas and problems. Some things that may skew the potentially gloomy outlook. The better educated and better resourced a population the more likely it is to have a stable or declining birth rate - look at the western European countries where growth is attributed to immigration. The US is reliant on imported fossil fuels - which are no longer necessarily cheap - this will provide the impetus for the development of technologies such as fuel cells and renewables. We probably will continue to have a hydrocarbon based economy for a long time - just the source of these will have to change - the energy carried in petrol is just immense. Totally agree that as a species we cannot continue our current consumption and expectations without devastating our planet leaving a nightmare world for our direct descendants. |

My two brothers were born there and my father helped hundreds of people fleeing the 1973 coup. I hope to get back for a visit someday--your pictures are a beautiful reminder of that great city and its people. |

| 6th August 2008 Stephen Paul | corrections - From: 2 weeks in Puerto Rico, Rincon, Puerto Rico Photography Historically, linguistically, socially, anthropologically- Puerto Rico is another "country", even though legally and politically it is a "self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States". And I didn't say Puertorriqueńos are more friendly, just that they are unique in combining all the aspects of their personalities. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rican_independence_movement Furthermore Mr. "me", talking about "Americans" during a discussion of Latin America is a bit of a misnomer. Everyone in North, South and Latin America is an American in every sense of the word. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas Finally I totally agree with your comment about population density! Sometimes travel writing gets a bit caught up in the "biggest, largest, longest, oldest, deepest" superlative race! I should always default to the term to make it sound high, like "one of the..." Thanks to everyone for the compliments!! This is my most viewed blog and I definitely feel priveledged to have shared the things I saw in puerto Rico with so many thousands of people! |
| 6th August 2008 Somala | finally! - From: The Best of the Rest in 61 Pictures or Less Finally I had a chance to see your Cambodia pics! It looks like you had an amazing time! I love amok too! Have you been to Chez Sovan in SJ? They have the best amok in town =) |
| 5th August 2008 me | Another correction... - From: 2 weeks in Puerto Rico, Rincon, Puerto Rico Photography Puerto Rico is not the most densely populated island on the planet. Probably not even in the top 10. Not even half of what is found in Java... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java Anyhow, awesome pics. Ain't life grand! |
| 5th August 2008 me | A couple corrections... - From: 2 weeks in Puerto Rico, Rincon, Puerto Rico Photography Puerto Rico is not a different country. Also, the people there are not any more friendly than your typical American. It's just a myth. |

| 28th July 2008 Matthew Stewart | Would like to talk to you.... - From: 4 Days in the South Island of New Zealand, Part II: New Zealand Photography You pictures are great. You remind me of me, in that it sounds like you make frequent stops when you see a photographic moment - my wife used to get frustrated with me as I make frequent U-turns because "I saw something" but now she loves taking photos and doesn't mind. Anyway we are going to NZ Oct.27th-31st then on to Australia from Oct. 31-Nov. 12th. We live in Sacramento CA and it sounds like you are from the area as well (Yosemite, etc.) We have a short time frame on the southern island and I figured you could give us some great advice. We don't like doing paid tours for days on end, would rather have the experience doing a trip ourselves, but we are very open to day tours like the helicopter one, etc. What would you recommend. We want to rent a car and drive the southern island. My phone is 916-788-8828. Take care and God bless. Matthew and Holly |

| 10th May 2008 Juanita Accardo | Please make contact - From: Sacred Lingas Turn Me On, Angkor Temples: Roluos, Thousand Lingas, Banteay Samrae Hellooooooooooooo As I spend many months of the year in Cambodia, I'm rather partial to those who have visited and share at least some of the same fascination with this country as I do. Would be very interested to know when you are next due to visit, if your sister lives there, if so where, oh so many questions actually................. Briefy, I am based in Ratanakiri and have some land there for future philanthropic purposes. Originally intending to fill a need in rural healthcare education/training, I've found the focus to be shifting towards providing opportunities for ex-orphans and tribal teens who need to learn job skills etc. If you would be interested in more background information my blogger name on this same site is Miss-dmeanour (travelblog.org/Bloggers/miss-dmeanour/). Actually was out there in January and returned last week from my latest jaunt. Now back at my Per Diem position at St. Mary's Medical Center in Long Beach (large Khmer population) befor heading out again later this year. Hope to hear from you. |

Perfection. |

I've been waiting with barely contained anticipation for Steve's incredible series of travelblogs on Cambodia! I can't wait to see how you convey the beauty and depth and energy that permeates life here. The dialogue about Angkor Wat was excellent! Finally got the internet working and checked out your work, very nice! I used to live in Shady Cove on hwy 62 and rented rafts on the Rogue River, what a co-inky-dink! I took a drive up 62 one day to see what I could see, and didn't know Crater Lake was so close until I was crossing a bridge over the side of it. What a pleasant surprise that was! Well keep up the excellent work, and hopefully I'll see you at my next pet scan ; ) |

It was a fantastic 2 days of shooting in very harsh weather. If I wasnt alone could I have spent 2 days on a hill with 30mph winds in 5 degree temps and occasional rain? I love staying in one spot, watching the weather come and go- and in Torres thats a very easy thing to do with the weather changing so quickly... |

| 14th January 2008 Slater | Home! - From: Moro Rock, Sequoia National Park: November 2006 This are great pics of my former home in the Sierras! Yes, the trees are really that big -- and really much bigger than portrayed in the pictures. It is impossible to capture on camera their immensity -- just as with the Grand Canyon. I feel homesick for the Sierras just looking at these pictures... even though I now live in a forest-city (Portland). |

| 27th September 2007 Stephen Paul | Circular Polarizer - From: Lava Tubes, Waterfalls and One Huge Volcano! Mt. Shasta Photography I never used to use filters, but a circular polarizer is sometimes essential to landscapes. It removes reflected light- hich takes out he reflections in lakes, rivers and ponds and also deepens the blue of the sky. It also filters out light and a poor quality polarizer makes the image less sharp. I heard a professional photographer say once "why would I cover up my $1000 lens witha $10 filter?" and it makes sense. But for a wide angle and lots-of-sky picture like 'land of the free'? A polarizer made all the difference! I use photoshop, but not heavily. I noticed after I began using the Nikon d80(or any other high quality camera) the colors are more vivid and balanced, thus less need for Photoshop. The other issue of a white-washed sky or a too-dark foreground is the central issue of any good landscape shot. professionals use an ND Gradient Filter- its like a lens of a sunglasses but with a gradual fade. This way you can compose your shot on the foreground, and the ND gradient filters out the overly bright sky to balance the image. All the juicy landscape photographers of the world use ND gradients with incredible success. On travelblog you should check out Cumberland Sausage- many of his incredible sunset shots are not possible without an ND gradient! Try this trick next time when taking pictures- squint your eyes. It takes out the detail, yet will show you if there is too much contrast to capture the scene without an ND gradient. You can also take 2 shots- one metered on the sky and one on the foreground, then merge the 2 in photoshop. Its the poor man's ND gradient!! :) |
| 27th September 2007 Crazy Canucks | Nice Pics - From: Lava Tubes, Waterfalls and One Huge Volcano! Mt. Shasta Photography Stephen, keep those pics coming. It's the best way for others to see the world and learn how others capture their surroundings. |
| 27th September 2007 BA | The Sky! - From: Lava Tubes, Waterfalls and One Huge Volcano! Mt. Shasta Photography I love your Pictures.... Question: How do you get your skies so blue? [Photoshop? Lens Filters?] I have taken some where around 10,000 pictures all over Central America and very few turn out with a all-around good exposure [as in your picture 'the land of the free'] either i have a blue sky and darkish foreground or a good foreground and a white sky. {ex. Pictures 19 & 20 on my web site: http://bcaphotos.com/PhotoStore/Central%20America.html } Please Help! Thanks So Much, Brian Allen |

We're having a wicked time travelling around the states. What do they call gringo's here??? Heading your way soon so will be in touch. Wendy & Stuart |
| 12th July 2007 Stephen Paul | My Position from the High Horse - From: Torres del Paine Part 3: Salto Grande, Lago Nordenskjöld, Chilean Patagonia Travelblog is filled with people travelling the globe, true "Hardcore Travellers" coloring the visited countries map more red than 10 frogs in a blender. I am not one of them. Self righteous travellers see their way as the only way, whereas I see my style of travelling as only right for me. Strong opinions make for great reading. For me, authenticity in travelling comes from two things- Attempting to learn about the language/culture of the place you are visiting, and learning about the native flora and fauna as well. Im not the first to talk about the Gringo Trail and Gringo Travellers using the America's as a checkerboard to jump their way across two continents- it is quite a well documented phenomenon! I wouldn't expect anyone from Britain or its territories(self-rightousness par excellence) to understand what America is all about. Yes I am white, yes I am from California and yes I claim a stronger bond to Latin and South American countries than anyone in Australia, Germany or England. The Spanish Empire and its ensuing effects on cultures are still being felt today here in the America's. A 18th century Spanish Mission that turned Indians into slaves is 1 km away from my home as I write this, half of the community I live with speaks spanish, and I see America as one family with many branches- North America, Latin America and South America. You said I am an American, and it's true- But I am no more American than Mexicans, Columbians, Brazilians or Chileans. One America, divided. Most people would go to Spain and marvel at the architecture- I would be disgusted at the opulence built on the backs of millions of slaves and Spanish subjects. For this reason yes, I see myself as coming from a position slightly more authentic than most travellers not attempting to learn any Spanish and transiently travelling through Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Ecuador. For me travelling in America, be it North or South, is something far more meaningful than a trip around the world. Utopia, Conquest, Subjugation, Extermination, Rebirth. These are the social scars common in every inch of American soil- from Alaska to Patagonia. |
| 12th July 2007 Stephen Paul | Provocation - From: Torres del Paine Part 3: Salto Grande, Lago Nordenskjöld, Chilean Patagonia I didn't think I CONSTANTLY criticize them do I? And for the record, I can speak Spanish but Im not fluent or consider myself an excellent speaker by any stretch. Also, I never once said I am a "hardcore traveller" nor would I want to be considered one! Furthermore I never claim anything in my posts, but maybe my next post will be titled "I am the only authentic traveller" just to piss you off. And I didn't make a gringo mistake by having my wallet stolen from my tent in the middle of the night, it was the thief who had a lapse of ethics. I take short vacations because I have a career where I work 50 hours a week. All my travelling is done on the side, in addition to working, saving and living in the real world. Im not a 23 year old student freshly out of school with time to burn and no roots to pull up. "self-right·eous adjective confident of one's own righteousness, esp. when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others." Yes, I would say that is generally true as I am rarely tolerant of the behavior of people I find offensive to other cultures. And frankly, I dont know how I could enjoy my vacations anymore than I already do! The view is nice from the saddle. |
| 12th July 2007 Jules | Nice blog - From: Torres del Paine Part 3: Salto Grande, Lago Nordenskjöld, Chilean Patagonia I must say your photos are wonderful. However, why do you constantly criticise "gringo travellers". Just because you can speak Spanish, you claim to be more authentic than anyone else travelling the globe. If you're such a hardcore traveller, why do you only take short "vacations"? Congratulations on having US$400 stolen from you - you just made the same mistake a "gringo traveller" makes... Your self-righteous attitude labels you an American no doubt... Enjoy your 10 day vacation. You might enjoy it more if you get off your high horse... |

I really liked that camera, buit recently upgraded to a Nikon D80. thanks for the compliments!! |
