Hi All, Yesterday Gerard and I took the bus to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, for the day. The bus ride was 2 1/2 hours each way so it was a bit of a trip. The bus ride was interesting. We would randomly pull over to the side of the road and pick up passengers along the way. There would be a person standing with their luggage what seemed like the middle of nowhere. We also saw hitchhikers along the way. In Uruguay it is considered safe and acceptable to hitch rides! Another observation was the countryside reminded me of ND. [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, We made it to Uruguay yesterday afternoon. We took a ferry across the river from Buenos Aires to Colonia. It took one hour on a hydro boat, which is the fast ferry. If we would have taken the slow ferry, it would take 3 hours to cross it! So, you can imagine how wide the river is! One thing Gerard and I noticed here in South America is that the transportation is pretty efficient. Uruguay is different than Argentina even though they are neighboring countries. We do sense that the people here are not as well off as the [View Full Entry]

Hi All, Today Gerard and I went white water rafting down the Mendoza River in the Andes Mountains. It was a ton of fun and the first time I have ever done that. Gerard fell out of the boat towards the end but we rescued him! Our boat was the English speaking boat with us, a New Zealander and a couple from Holland. The rapids were a Class 3 out of a Class 6 so not super crazy but we got some good ones in. The water was completely brown from the dirt in the river bottom and freezing cold. We [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, We made it to Medoza yesterday around 3 pm and over to the hotel. It is gorgeous over here. We are near the Chilean border and can see the Andes Mountains. Last night we went for dinner at an Italian restaurant and the food was great. Similar to Buenos Aires, people eat around 10 pm. We couldnīt wait last night so we ate around 9 pm and the place was empty! We felt like such turismos (tourists). Today we went on scheduled wine tours in the area and had a great time. I maybe a little buzzed from the [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, Well, Gerard and I just finished our last day in the lovely Buenos Aires. We are flying out tomorrow morning to Mendoza, Argentina, which is near the Chile border. We are staying there for 3 days and heading back to Buenos Aires where we will catch a ferry to Uruguay. The tango show last night was awesome. We had a nice time although a bit of challenge getting back to the hotel becasue we were out of pesos. One thing to note here is that ATMs are not easy to come by! We managed to get back to the [View Full Entry]

Hi All, Gerard and I just got back from dinner (it is 12:30 am)! Like I mentioned in an earlier post, dinner is eaten very late here. Today we spent the day in El Centro. It is the center area of Buenos Aires and where many of their governmental buildings are located. We did see the infamous balcony where Evita made her speech (or where Madonna who played Evita sang the "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" line). Apparently, many of Argentina's presidents address the people on this balcony. It is really is an amazing city considering that in late 2001 their [View Full Entry]

Hola! I am posting early tonight as Gerard and I are getting ready to go to a tango show. The show starts at 10 pm so it may be a late night tonight. Today we went to San Telmo. An old Italian neighborhood that on Sundays has a mercado (market). Also, San Telmo is known for its milongos (tango dancehalls). We did see tango dancers on the street today and it was so cool! So, we thought we should go to an actual show. Tango almost died out here but has made a come-back recently. It is good for tourism! I [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, Gerard and I made it to Buenos Aires (BA) around 8 am in the morning. BA is one hour ahead of NYC so we did not have to adjust to a major time difference. The flight was 9 hours from Atlanta and we struggled with sleeping through the night on the plane. The plane was packed and it was stuffy all night! Other than that, we made it to BA relatively smoothly. Customs went really quick and we got all of luggage! We took a taxi to our hotel in the Palermo Viejo neighborhood. It is a cool neighborhood [View Full Entry]
