We spent 3 nights in Cinque Terre. On Tuesday, we spent the day with Susy and Rhonda. It was great to see a couple familiar faces. We spent the afternoon at the beach. It was great to spend the day in the Sea. We went out for dinner at a pasta place my sister, Barb had been to. It was quite good. We then hung out on these huge rocks on the shoreline, talked and ate gelato. It doesn't get much better than that. Wednesday morning, I am pleased to announce, we slept in. It was great! We hiked for a bit in the afternoon and finished the day with a swim. Evenings are quite interesting in these towns and cities. Families all gather in the 'main' square and the kids all play together. You see ... read more

This morning we headed to the Vatican. We were at St.Peter's Basilica by 8:00am. It was wonderful. There were no crowds at this time and we could appreciate our surroundings. We then headed to the Vatican Museum which houses the Sistene Chapel. We found the people and the crowds. It was 9:00am and you cannot imagine the amount of people that were in line already. We decided to join a tour group to avoid the line. It was a great tour, filled with aspects of chaos. At the store where we paid for the tour, a couple employees got into a heated argument as only they can in Rome. Halfway through our tour, our leaders cell phone rang. Her and her boss got into a heated discussion because apparently 4 people got lost that were in ... read more

(If you are ever in Venice and have the option, canal view or air conditioning, AC is the answer.) Saturday morning we awoke excited for our free breakfast. (Sometimes, at real hotels, breakfast is included.) Considering the amount of peanut butter sandwiches we have been eating, free breakfast sounded great. (We bought a small jar of peanut butter in Salzburg. We have ate it daily since. It is cheap, easy and does not require refrigeration.) To make a long story shorter, we realize that crusty buns with packages of butter and jam = breakfast. Hmm. And a very sweet lady serving coffee, unsweetened hot chocolate and grapefruit juice. On the plus side, it is so bloody hot right now in Italy that the butter spread easily. Not exactly the breakfast we were looking for. We did ... read more

(All photos have been added to date.) We arrived in Venice today around 2:00pm. First thing I noticed was that it was still hot. We stepped out of the train station and realized how beautiful this city is. The best thing was that Tourist information told us to take a WATER BUS to our hotel. How fun is that! You buy a ticket, line up at the dock and wait for your boat to appear. It was a great way to start seeing the city. We got lost momentarily enroute to our hotel but nothing serious. Yes, we are actually staying in a real hotel. We splurged in this city (actually, I booked it and told Sherrie after the fact). If Sherrie were in charge of accommodations, we would be staying in train stations. After checking ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Ljubljana July 31st 2008

(We have added some pictures to a few previous entries. Hopefully we will get caught up tonight or tomorrow.) We left Salzburg yesterday and got our train to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was only a 4 hr train ride, which seemed much shorter than the one we took from Zurich. I must admit, I really miss the Swiss trains. In Switzerland, all the trains were spotless and extremely punctual. You get spoiled by that. It was a nice enough train and at least there was a window that opened. A really nice couple from the States (who are currently living in Prague) sat with us for part of the journey. When we were planning the trip, many questioned why we were going to Slovenia. Both of us have really enjoyed it. Things here are cheap, everyone is ... read more

Today Sherrie and I went on separate tours. During her time here at Christmas, she went on the Sound of Music tour. Today she was very excited to go and see the Ice Caves. She took the train to Werfen, then got on a bus, walked 20 minutes uphill to a gondola, and finished with another 20 minute walk uphill to the caves. The views in the caves were amazing. Unfortunately, she was not allowed to take pictures inside. During the hour long tour, she climbed 1400 steps in zero degree temperatures. She had a great time and it was everything she had hoped. I went on the Sound of Music tour. It seemed like the thing to do in Salzburg and I am glad that I did. The company picked me up at the hostel ... read more

Yesterday, we sadly left the mountains. We decided to spend a night in Zurich to shorten our trip today to Salzburg. Sherrie had been to Zurich before and I was excited to go. We arrived in the afternoon and checked into a hotel. The backpackers we had been sent to was full so we found a reasonably priced hotel around the corner. It was a cute little room, with two twin beds and a great view of the river. You did want to focus on the view out the window because the view of the carpet was much less enjoyable. We went window shopping since apparently other parts of the world still close on Sundays. Then we ended up by the lake/harbour which was quite nice. We went out for dinner and then for another walk ... read more

Today was the first day we woke up to a very light rain. Nothing too serious, however, it was cloudy and not a good day for Sherrie to go Paragliding. Instead, after breakfast, we went on a hike along the river which led to a waterfall. It was a nice walk, much less strengous then yesterday which suited Steph just fine. We saw beautiful landscape along the way - the river, meadows, huge rocks. Everyone told us about the great waterfall at the end. It was nice but it is quite obvious these people have never been to Niagara Falls. It was not exactly as Sherrie and I anticipated. But a great walk nonetheless. A girl from our hostel joined us this morning. She is an accountant in California and was quite nice. The walk was ... read more

Today Sherrie had the great idea to do the most challenging hike - Schilthorn. I should have been suspicious when Karrie Gregson recommended it and said it was tough. It was a great challenge. The weather was beautiful and the views were amazing. It almost made you forget how tough it was. I ended up going as high as Birg and Sherrie went all the way to the top - Schilthorn. I took the cable car up one stop and met her there. Thankfully, daylight hours are limited and Sherrie did not think we had enough time to walk down. Little did she realize I had NO INTENTION of walking down. I was all for the cable car ride, regardless of the cost. We then toured the little town of Murren. It was lovely. The good ... read more

Left Paris (and our wireless) yesterday. Before we left, Steph went to D'Orsey and Sherrie wandered around the park. The 6 hr train trip in first class was enjoyable. There are benefits to being old and needing to buy the 1st class ticket. Arrived in Interlaken at midnight to a very hot hostel room. The girls had not thought to open the windows! We fixed that. Today we wandered around Interlaken before getting groceries and heading to Gimmelwald. To get to Gimmelwald, we took a train, bus and then cable car. It was great. The views are spectacular. We will post pictures when we get to wireless again. Only allowed 15 minutes so this post will be short. Our hostel is nice but there are 14 girls in our room. A little cramped but oh well. ... read more
