Ottawa, CanadaToday was another very busy day. The Fulbright group met a 7:45 a.m. for breakfast, and at 8:30 a.m. we headed off for the Museum of Civilization. Here we were lead on a tour of the museum, where we learned about the history of Canada from pre-contact of Europe to present. The museum had an excellent exhibition of First Nation artifacts and their history. From here we went over to the National Gallery of Canada, where we toured the museum and saw Canada’s permanent art collection of both contemporary and modern art. All of the artists were Canadian. Finally we had high tea at the Chateau Laurier where met with Clare Beckton who spoke on women’s issues in Canada. Hoy era otro dia muy ocupado. El grupo de becarios de Fulbright se juntaron para ... read more

canada day ottawaIt’s July 1st- Canada Day! I woke up this morning to find the city full of red and white. After breakfast we headed to Parliament Hill to see the changing of the guard and experience the opening of the 140th Canada Day. There were thousands of people with hats, shirts, and flags ready to celebrate. After the changing of the guard we walked around the different areas and booths all celebrating the multicultural tradition that makes Canada special. We then took a break and had lunch at the National Art Centre. This evening we will continue with a fireworks show and live music concerts which are taking place all around the city. It really is a big party for everyone. For more information visit Ottawa’s website: http://www.rogerstelevision.com/option.asp?lid=84&rid=4&sid=2567&mid=1 Es el primero de julio, el ... read more

Ottawa, CanadaI have finally arrived in Canada this morning. I am in Ottawa, the capitol city of Canada. The flight from Washington, D.C. was only one hour and thirty minutes, but we left for the airport in D.C. at 5:00 AM. Let's just say, I was not completely aware of where I was until I was about to land in Ottawa. It's interesting to note that all of the anouncements on the plane, as well as all of the signs are in both French and English, Canada's two official languages. This city is beautiful, and much of it reminds me of Europe. The city is in the province of Ontario, and during the winter has the longest ice skating rink in the world. After arriving to our hotel, we went on a guided walk of ... read more

UntitledIt was another full day of great activities and meeting. Our day started off with a meeting at the OAS (Organization of American States) to meet on sustainable development. The meeting covered three main ideas: 1. The impact of climate change; 2. Human health and enviornment; 3. Chemical exposure. Our discussion was again very positive because it provided information on improvement and success of current work happening in the Americas, as well as ways that people can help. From the OAS we headed to the Mexican Cultural Institue. The Mexican Cultural Institute is housed in a mansion that was built in the early 1900s by the US State Treasurer of that time. The building itself is a historical site and is worth an estimated $46 million dollars, not including the countless artwork throughout the home. ... read more

Travel so farI want to start by mentioning one thing I forgot yesterday, which is that it is about 94 degrees here plus the humidity here in Washington, D.C. Let's just say its airconditioning is a necessity...Today was very full day of activities. We started by meeting for breakfast and then beginning with a three hour meeting, which included introductions, expectations, and overview of the Fulbright program. We then had lunch and headed to the Woodrow Wilson Center (The only president with a Ph.D) for a meeting and lecture on Canada and Mexico in relation to the United States. One of the speakers by the last name of Wentraub, was one of the creators of NAFTA. His perspective on North American relations gave an optimistic view of the future of the three countries working together. ... read more

After traveling for more than 7 hours, and a layover in Denver, Colorado, I finally arrived to my first destination, Washington, D.C. Because I arrived late, I had to head over by taxi to our first oficial dinner at a Brazilian Restaurant. My students would have enjoyed it because there was a soccer game between Mexico and Brazil. Tomorrow begins our first official day of lectures. I will give information tomorrow on our discussions. Manana empezamos nuestro ... read more
