CYORF is an organization I found online, and have been exchanging a series of enthusiastic emails prior to my visit with the director, Edward Mutumbe. By the end of the week my schedule is already full, but I did have a few bags of clothing and shoes to give. I contacted Edward and expressed my regret on not being able to spend time with them as a volunteer, but I would be more than happy to drop off donations and come for a “quick” visit. We arrive shortly at the CYORF office early Friday morning and I am seated on one side of a small dark hut-style house outside of town. The room fills with neatly dressed board members and community representatives with notepads and pens: “SISTER SHERRY. What do you desire to bring to ... read more

Transition

It didn’t take long to readjust to travel life. I’ve felt more comfortable during my 12 hour layover in London’s Heathrow Airport then I have since my return from travel last year. I love the airport environment because it is one where no one has to fit in. Everything from culture, currency, fashion and language vary. Where most people would cringe at the layover I sat happy and content giving my mind and body the proper time to transition from the chaos of philly life to the chaos of travel life. Using my backpack for a pillow I leaned back and watched the world go by without an interruption of a text message, phone call or email. It took 2 days for me to arrive to my destination in Jinja, Uganda. But before I begin ... read more

I'm Not Sleeping Alone

Take your hand and hold it out in front of you, palm up. Now spread out your fingers. Yes, I think about that. That was the size of the spider I woke up to (add an inch or two for leg span), resting comfortably on the wall above my head. It was LARGE. Large enough to cast a shadow, large enough to see fangs. Linnea gets the point across when she comments that if we are to smash it, the carcass of a small dog, or even child could be inside. But this is where the communal living has its benefits. Now I pride myself in being a strong and independent woman, but I’m no dummy. I know when to consult the boys. I cross the hall to Roger and Elliot’s room, asking calmly for assistance ... read more

My home before home... Dharamshala is nestled in the valley of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh in Northern India. The town is split into two levels, the lower being Dharamshala (where I am staying). The upper level, a few steep miles uphill, is christened McLeod Ganj, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile, as well as an influx of Tibetan refugees fleeing the Chinese oppression in their homeland. The entire region provides a generous view of the Dhauladhar Mountain range and surrounding valleys at the foothill of the Himalayas. The view is so expansive that you can sit under the bright warm sunshine on one mountain while you watch dark storm clouds gather to shower over another. The weather here is pleasant. Warm before the frequent thunderstorms, and cool after. And just a note, ... read more

My time in Cambodia is brief, but I’ve managed to pack in a good deal in less then one week. I fly to India via Thailand tomorrow and want to post these photos along with some history before leaving. Cambodia’s history is filled with beauty and of horror. This blog will briefly walk you through both. The Beauty: The pagodas and temples in Cambodia are quite stunning and admist dramatic landscapes even moreso. Photos are taken of the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda in Phnom Penh where I got reprimanded for not taking off my shoes. But the main tourist attraction for Cambodia are the Temples of Ankor in Siem Reap, the heart and soul of the ancient Khmer empire or, aka, the place where Tomb Raider was filmed. There are lots of temples so impressive ... read more

There is one thing I have to do while in Sapa. I have to find Pen. Pen is one of the hill tribe people living in a village outside of Sapa, and a friend of Karen’s. The only clues for finding her are a photograph and this letter: Dear Sherry, As soon as you get to Sapa find someone dressed the same as Pen. They will know her and send word for her to come into town to see you. She has 3 sons now including a new little baby boy. Her village is 5-7 kms from town. If you go out there take your own water and eat first. Pen speaks English and is gorgeous...Don’t try to get police permission to visit her village, it will take too long. Just plead ignorant if you are ... read more

-LATEST TRAVEL ITINERARY- Since I had unexpectedly spent the bulk of my time in Hoi An, I now have 10 days to make it through Northern Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and by May 13th, India where the next (and final) volunteer program awaits. My intention in Northern Vietnam is to rejuvenate in magical Sapa, ALONE. And boy is it working. Sapa sits proudly upon a mountaintop and is tucked away far north just miles from the Chinese border. It was no picnic getting here from Hoi An. One hour taxi, 1 hour flight, another 1 hour taxi, 10 hour train ride, and a 1 hour bus (also add waiting hours in between each). But I’m happy to say, it was well worth it. The weather is pleasantly warm during the day, and comfortably chilly at night, and ... read more

"The riverside town of Hoi An oozes charm and culture from every corner. The most enchanting place along the coast, the one spot worth lingering in." -Lonely Planet After 6 weeks, I leave Hoi An today without having seen the MY SON temples, having taken a cooking class, or the dozens of other “MUST DO’S” on the tourist list. I suppose I could have made time for them if I tried, but it just hadn’t seemed important (OK, except the tailored clothes). But I leave this morning with a smile on my face, tears in my eyes, and heartfelt memories that I’m confident are strong enough to bring me back. Posted are a few of my touristy snapshots...... read more

Besides working with Lifestart, I’ve been tagging along with Giao (Vietnamese humanitarian) for a little insight on the kinds of projects and people she works with. It was Giao who introduced me to the Ly Chan family, and since then I’ve been interested to write, photograph and meet those that she helps as well. Meet MANH Manh is now almost 3 years old. She suffers from HYDROCEPHALUS (water on the brain) and brain damage as a result of malnutrition. From what I understand this is a common condition. The life expectancy is only a few years but Giao helps the children and the families make the time more manageable. Manh is the third daughter in a poorly educated and economically strained family. They live in a small house on the main road between Hoi An and ... read more

Da Nang Hospital

Pre-Op (Part I) I suppose the Da Nang Hospital is not the worst in the world, but I sure the hell would not want to be treated there. Yet I guess like anything else, it’s all relative. Tam got his hospital bed and I thought, what a piece of crap, but he happily jumped on it and said WOW, this is a GREAT bed! Having a room in Da Nang Hospital means a room shared with 5-10 other patients in varying conditions from brain trauma, cancer, to broken limbs. There is one shared bathroom consisting of a squat toilet, small sink, bucket and spicket. The only 2 things supplied for your stay is one sheet and a pair of prison-like pajamas (how appropriate). And it was no joke when they said you need to bring everything ... read more
