Great blog Sherry however there were just a couple of omissions. You forgot to mention the young love at Third sight that developed before our eyes with Sherry and ???????. It was so nice to see. The saying is perfect - From: Living With A Broken Heart
Your blog makes me think of the quality of one's life. It is not how long you live on this earth that defines your life. It is what you do in your life your life that does. We should all live our lives being okay saying "If I were to die tomorrow, I would have lived a good life."

differences - From: Seeing Strength, Not Weakness
after reading your blog, it really hit me how much we complain in this country. about everything - traffic, tax rebates, gas for our enormous SUVS. But in all these complaints, people don't realize how fortunate they are to have jobs to sit in traffic to get to, or pay checks that come to get rebates from and SERIOUSLY car payments that are mortgage payments to some people to put the over priced gas into..... it is refreshing to hear that there is a group of people that don't complain when they don't have legs to walk on for crying out loud! I am happy that you have met them.

Not what I saw - From: Da Nang Hospital
Your description of your experience in Danang Hospital is an eye-opener. But it is not the same experience I had. My family spent June 2007 living with a family on Tran Cao Van Street in Danang and my father in law spent 3 days in the hospital after cracking his head open after a fall. Maybe we were just there at the right time, because I was impressed by the hospital staff, treatment and everything else. He did not have surgery though, so maybe that is where the difference is, I do not know. When we were there, he had his own room(spotless with a bathroom), they did all the tests that I would have expected from a doctor in California (all three doctors that treated him spoke fluent English). The cost per day for the stay was what meal would have cost in the cafeteria at UCLA Med Center. Those conditions in your pictures look awful, and maybe other parts of the hospital were bad, but I did not see them and I woud not hesitate to seek medical attention there if I needed it, based on how I saw my father in law treated. Regarding the sketches, those are awsome.

Cultural differences - From: Teaching A Little Class
Hi - it's fantastic you're doing so much there. But I just wonder if you're aware that some of your 'do's and don'ts' seem to ignore cultural differences. Eg blowing your nose onto a tissue or hanky is considered disgusting in Vietnam and many asian countries. Slurping noodles and spitting bones onto the floor are considered acceptable in noodle stalls. And locals see no problem with chewing with their mouth open - they think it's odd to try to chew with your mouth closed. While it's important to be polite, I don't think imposing Western manners onto locals is useful.

I think you should write a book. - From: I'm Not Sleeping Alone
Sherry, I know you feel us common folk cannot relate to all the things you have seen and done. To be sure, we cannot fully appreciate the impact these things have had on you. But your way of storytelling makes me feel like I was there. I didn't know weather to laugh or cry when I read your telling of the spider incident. Thanks for making a little housewife's day a little brighter, and reminding me that we are all here to spread what light we can to the world. You are doing that in a way that most people cannot, but we should all strive to do our part in whatever way we can. Happy trails home again. Maybe you and lisa can come visit me in California.

Sherry this is first time i really got to read all of your blogs and i am ashamed of myself. To think I couldnt make time to read these blogs when you are helping kids, travelling around the world and not once have you complained. Its mothers day today and i stopped over moms and dads, and i told them today was the day that i was goin to read your entries. Well i didnt expect all the things that you have gone through and i sit here writing this with tears in my eyes, that i even deserve to have a sister as caring and giving as you. You are a real inspiration to everyone that read you blogs, and we are all so proud of you. Its sad to see all these kids in Vietnam that cannot get medical attention or food or clothing, something we "fat americans" take for granted. Well be careful in India, we miss you alot and cant wait to have cervesas with you at the London Grill or anywhere else for that matter(bet you miss coors light). So keep those blogs coming and postcards and we will see you in a month love John

amazing - From: CAMBODIA Part II
Hi Sherry, Your mom just told me about your latest adventure/experience. I am in awe of what she was talking about, but mostly that you are doing such amazing things. Who would have thought that your art would have taken you to so many places and allowed you to touch so many lives. I think that what you are doing is unbelievably generous and loving and I am not at all surprised!! Though I don't really know you that well, personally, who you are is so very evident in the works that you are doing----"They'll know we are Christians by our LOVE"--those hymnal words are so true. God Bless You and keep you safe as you minister to the needy. Love and Peace, Pat Casey

Good thoughts - From: Changing A Life
Sherry, I'm being sent your blogs by Lisa and it's so great that you're encountering these wonderful children and people. In my travels, I'm always made acutely aware of how rich our own country is and how much we take for granted, including all our opportunities. I hope you continue to write about this, maybe a book could be in the works... For those of your readers who might not know, child poverty is still extreme in the US. 29 million children live in low-income families. That's 40% of our country's children who are living on the edge. While it may not compare to the extremes you're finding in SE Asia, there is still a lot of work to be done here too. This site is helping educate and help: http://www.nccp.org/cat_8.html Keep up your good works! Victoria Webb West Chester, PA

Dear Sherry, Lifestart Foundation can help this family. I will send the necessary funds over with Peta and Damien on the 26th of this month. Please let me know how much is needed. Perhaps with the help of Dorothee and Giao you can give me a detailed medical report and finacial breakdown for projected costs. If you can sort out what you can for the short term for this family I will look into helping them on a long term basis when I return. I know you didn't sign up for this and it's a long way from art class but thank god you are there in my absence! Much love and a big Hug from Karen. x

Can't wait to get there! - From: The Unplanned Plan
I am a sponsor of Karen's wonderful Foundation and am about to head back to Hoian in 3 weeks for my second time in 6 months. Your diary on Hoian has really summed up how I feel about the place, life and everything that is important in my life. Hoian, the people and especially the kids have touched my heart like nothing else in this world. Hoian will be my second home now.....the place where I go for a reality check. The best part about Lifestart Foundation is that you can actually see where your money is going. I raise money each time before I go back to Hoian so I can make sure our sponsor families can have things in their lives that we take for granted, like clothes and food. I can't wait to get back and see the kids working hard in their new class room! You must feel like you have achevieved so much with your time in Hoian!

You, like Karen, are an angel here on earth - From: The Unplanned Plan
It's great to hear how destiny has drawn you to meet Karen and help these wonderful people of Hoi An. My girlfriends and I have sponsored one of the many families who needed a stable roof over their heads for the last year through Lifestart. We had the privilege to meet them last October and bring a large quantity of clothing that Karen had collected for those who needed them. I know that the experience was life changing and eye opening for all of us. Our sponsor daughter, Gai, is training to be a Beauty therapist (just like my girlfriends and I) and Lua,her brother, is able to go to school thanks to our sponsorship. As you know by now, the people of Hoi An are generous despite not having anything to give and kind-hearted and curious. I'm sure you're experience will open up a whole new world of hopes and dreams for these people and yourself. It's wonderful what you're doing!!
