"We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures within them." -Thornton Wilder "I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I have not just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well." -Diane Ackerman *I have been trying to publish this blog for almost 3 days. Seems a glitch with TB itself has thwarted not just me, but other bloggers as well, lol, according to the posts here, anyway. Forgive little errors as mistakes have been very difficult to polish, also.* Sunday, November 20th, 2011. Beijing MAGIC!

“To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” ~ Freya Stark And so it is. This morning and for the last 3 mornings, I have awoken in one of the world's largest cities. It still doesn not quite register that I am sharing space with about 20 million other people. Almost half the population of our country, Canada. How am I supposed to wrap my brain around that, eh? LOL Beijing is really magical. I love the "feel" of this city and I am enjoying the COOL weather. I have bought myself a rather, if I do write so myself, FUNKY touque/hat to wear here, since it feels decidedly chilly to me, being that the temperature hovers just slighty above zero here since I arrived and I ... read more

I am now in Beijing, in my hotel room, listening to the sound of traffic outside. I am tired. Today, I visited the Great Wall of China. In order to catch up and write about that I must tie up my Xiamen entries. In the final week in Xiamen I was busy making time to be with those I needed to say farewell to...Jim and I had a last meal at Dad's Kitchen together. I made a trip to the SM Mall with Elise, Happy and Vickie...we shopped around and had a cup of coffee together at Starbucks. Then Elise departed and Happy and Vicky and I had a meal and took in the worst movie I've ever seen. I chose it. I apologized after to the girls. Next time girls, you pick the movie! It is Friday morning here, the 18th of November, and I am just finishing up the final touches on this blog entry. I have been wrestling with it for several days having had issues with uploading pictures, making editorial/text changes and generally "polishing" it. As usual though, I will have missed little things here and there while I am packing up and making my departure arrangements. I have done my best with the pictures. They can be such a "bete-noir" with this blog. *Sigh* I am beset by melancholy listening to the rain drumming steadily outside. The last several days have been wet and uncomfortable. My new umbrella busted a spoke. Already. Sheesh. Good thing I'm on my way home tomorrow. LOL Who-so-ever amongst you who dreams of tropical or, in this case, sub-tropical paradise, ... read more

Sunday, November 6th, 2011, was bitter sweet. That was the day I taught my last class at Tianjiao and also hosted a terrific birthday party for me and Rich. Rich had turned 65 on November first and I turned 45 on November fifth. I thought it would be grand to have a combined birthday party at our apartment which would sort of double as a going-away party, too. Joyce and Charles were flying away the next day, Monday, back to Canada, and their respective homes and families in Ontario and Manitoba. Alan was departing for Tibet on Tuesday though Jim planned to stay for the month of November and I am here until November 19th. The party was so much fun.....we had the Tianjiao staff including all the teaching assistants, James, and all the teachers and ... read more

*We have had no internet service in our apartment for a few days. I have not published because of it. I am at the school using the connection there, today on November 8th. Now I know how Justin Bieber feels. LOL. Well, lol, sort of. My face was SO sore from smiling all evening, this Hallowe'en night! Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining, it was awesome! Me and the other costumed teachers starred in literally hundreds of pictures this evening. Rich, Diane, Joyce and I and a convoy of the marketing staff from Tianjiao jumped into the school's van after our evening teaching and strolled the shopping street in Xiamen in our Hallowe'en gear. Rich did say today at lunch after our visit to the antiques market that I'm a diva (pffffft! Whatever!! LMAO) I ... read more

Ahhh...spas. Ya gotta love 'em. I do. Last Tuesday, Vivien, Rich, Diane, Jim and I boarded a bus taking us to the 5 star RiYueGu Hot Springs Resort and Spa (www.riyuegu.com)on the outskirts of Xiamen. We arrived after a 30 minute bus ride on a cloudy and cool day, but we didn't mind. We met the bus going to the spa by the waterfront after meeting at school and taking a city bus. Upon arrival at the destination we disembarked from the bus and bought ourselves some bathing caps--awful things--but apparantly mandatory in certain watery locales onsite. All I can say is WOW. We spent the entire afternoon immersed in water. I was prunella at the end, but I was sooooo relaxed! LOL We bathed in a lemon water pool, a coffee water pool, a cucumber ... read more

On Friday, October 26th, at about 4:30 p.m. I was at our campus waiting for the others to show up before we departed to our Hallowe'en outing to a local mall. Well, it actually was not THAT local...lol...we had gone to see it the day before and it was quite a long way to get there--a good 45 mintues by van! We, and by we I mean Vivian, Diane, Joyce, Rich, another staff member whose name I don't know, and Bond, (NO, not James Bond, just Bond, LOL) our driver, made up the reconnaissance party. We checked out the venue because we were having a Hallowe'en "do" with costumes--basically a BIG party for our kids and also the public. I sang with Alan who accompanied me on the guitar. I was dressed as an angel. LOL ... read more

Sigh. Could it really be that I have only 13 more days in my beautiful Chinese adventure? Well, 13 days in Xiamen, more or less. I will stay a couple of days after work to pack up and say my good-byes. Then it's off to Beijing to finish my amazing adventure (s). Life has settled into a routine here.....work on Friday afternoons through the evenings till 8:30, then all day Saturday till 5:40 and also Sunday mornings 8:30 till noon. Then another class again on Monday night from 7-8:30. Tuesdays-Thursdays are adventure days! LOL I go to spin classes twice per week and do run/walk at least one other day of the week. Jim, Diane and I and sometimes more of us, lol, go mountain climbing on Friday mornings. Joyce and I pick up groceries and ... read more

A Hakka Adventure

October 16th 2011

I am writing this blog entry almost 2 weeks since I visited the Hakka houses; none-the-less, the memory of the trip is still much with me. The cinnamon/paprika coloured dirt hills, the huge black and neon blue butterflies hovering mid-air, and very unfortunately, the garbage everywhere. Leafy bamboo canopies black as pitch underneath in full daylight. Prong-horned cows and bulls here and there.....it felt so GOOD to be rural. LOL I didn't realize how much I enjoy my small town life and its proximity to nothing but "outside" until that moment. I relaxed in the "green" and breathed sweet clear air. Everything in China is loud; it is a very noisy culture, we find. The sheer population, the fact that that many people living, dying and otherwise going about their businesses in such close proximity to ... read more
