My futon has been rolled up and placed into its designated spot inside the closet while the keys to the front door of my apartment have been taken off their key ring and returned to the caretakers. As expected, the semester ended with a halt and before it had time to process I was moving onward yet again. After spending a week in Seoul, Korea I returned to Tokyo, Japan for what I thought would be my new home for the remainder of the summer. Plans have since changed and by the end of this month I will be returning home to Tennessee. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces, speaking in English, and most importantly having a double order of hash browns scattered, covered, smothered at the Waffle House. For all of you who ... read more

Last semester I walked into the student lounge of the Center for International Education building on campus and noticed a classmate of mine laughing and talking around the table with not one, but three very good looking Japanese ladies. Understand that this classmate of mine was just a little geeky, in a cool way, but still geeky if that makes sense. Immediately I approached him and asked, “What’s your secret, how the heck did you pull this off?” He looked at me with a grin on his face and responded, “Well, to be honest, I just sat down.” Truthfully, just about any native English speaking man can find an attractive Japanese girlfriend regardless that he may be a complete nerd in his home country. Actually, being in Japan now automatically makes me five times cooler than ... read more

Living in Japan is living in a world where the simplest most mundane tasks can easily transform into the most confusing, embarrassing, or even impossible situations. One prime example is grocery shopping. Before placing an item into my shopping basket, I must study it carefully. After several minutes of strenuous examination and several educated guesses I am then ready to draw conclusions about what I think it is I will be purchasing. Finally, when I return home it is quite common to learn that I have purchased something completely different than what I thought I was actually buying in the first place. For nearly two months Josh and I couldn’t figure out why Japanese wheat bread tasted so delicious and time after time we didn’t hesitate at tossing a couple loaves into our shopping basket each ... read more

Okay, I'll go ahead and be the first to admit that I am a slacker. You must understand that I truly have plans to submit another blog entry very soon. In the meantime, I would like to share with you an article I submitted for my school newspaper a few weeks ago. Keep in mind that it was written for my colleagues, but regardless it should spare me a few days, right? I hope someone reading takes a little something from it. Soon I will have more for you. Thanks for reading and cheers to each one of you!! ************ Those moments in life when an experience allows you to pause, reflect, then grow are golden and should be sought and valued. Undeniably, our lives are packed with subsequent moments in time, but rarely do those ... read more

For those of you who were convinced that I would never return to my blog, worry no longer because I am back and I have an exciting lesson to share with you about St. Valentines Day and the way it is celebrated in Japan. Much like the western world, February 14th in Japan is still a time for Cupid to make love blossom between two hearts, lovers to share enchanted and romantic evenings together, and gifts to be exchanged, well sort of. In Japan, on St. Valentines Day women are the only ones doing the giving. It is thier responsibility to give chocolates while the men do not give the women anything. There are two types of chocolate giving that occurs in Japan. The first type is “honmei” or homemade chocolate giving and these chocolates are ... read more

The magic behind taking a trip without any specific plan or expectation is that it leaves little room for disappointment. Having an ''anything goes'' mindset provided me with numerous opportunities to get myself into several situations (some better than others) that usually ended with very rewarding endings. Moreover, traveling alone not only made me more approachable for others、but it also literally forced me interact with the locals and other fellow travelers. Each day I was able to meet many new and interesting people. Some days I would travel with those I met for lengthy amounts of time while other days we would simply share conversation over beer in a bar, or on a night bus to our next destination. One of my greatest observations was that the majority of the other travelers that I met ... read more

I am having a nice time traveling and I have met many interesting people. I shared a room on the train with a nice guy that lives in Hiroshima, Japan. We ended getting a guesthouse together and rented motor bikes taking them all Northern Thailand. I made a nice Thai friend by the name of So. We did some sight seeing and went to an amusement park. I just returned from trekking in the mountains for 3 days and it was fantastic! We stayed in hill tribe village huts, ate wild fruits, went swimming under waterfalls. Bamboo rafting, and elephant riding. The friends that I made on the Trek were from Australia, New Zealand, England, Sweden, and one from America. Last night to celebrate Christmas we went to the Art Café an Italian and Mexican restaurant ... read more

Dear friends and family, The tree is standing and the lights shining for Christmas is just around the corner. Many of you are running around picking up last minute stocking stuffers while some of you are too consumed with final exams to even think about the holiday season. One might think that living in a country where Christmas is not an official holiday and only one percent of the population considers themselves to be Christian that the holiday spirit in Japan would be nonexistent. However, with the help of western influence and big business signs of Christmas joy can be seen all across Japan and this is not an exaggeration. For example, the Kernel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken or “Kentucky Chan” as one of my Japanese friends says is decked out in his Santa ... read more

It all started early Thursday morning around 5:30 am when the sky was still dark and the air crisp. My destination was Nagano Prefecture, but I didn’t know when I would get there or if I would even make it at all. I left the doubters asleep in their beds and with my close friend Michele or journey began. Our supplies included a bilingual map, hand made cardboard signs, and pockets full of souvenirs. From my dormitory to Kyoto takes under 30 minutes by train, but it wasn’t public transportation we were seeking, it was a ride from a total stranger that we wanted. It took Michele and I three hours to make it to Kyoto. After walking all morning in the direction of what we thought was correct we met our first trucker who took ... read more

Final exams are quickly approaching and soon this semester will come to a close. Nearly all of my new friends are staying at Kansai Gaidai for only one semester so in less than one month they will be returning to their home countries. While I will not be coming home this Christmas I will be doing a good deal of traveling. Two days ago I booked my airline ticket for a little trip I like to call 30 days in South East Asia. My mother sent me this e-mail a while ago explaining to me how much my younger sister Clara would miss me this December and It went like this, “Clara can't wait until Christmas to see April. Clara said Christmas last year wasn't fun because April wasn't there. I asked her about missing you ... read more
