October 10th 2007

10 Oct 2007 Got up early this morning to hike up to a viewpoint called Piazza De Michael Angelo. We crossed the river when the morning fog was just lifting and took some pictures of the calm water, simply breathtaking. As we hiked up the hill we saw the beautiful city unfold before us…this is the way to see Florence! After we came back down we had some time for shopping, we found this cute little shop with a nice old Italian man who made all the shoes and purses he sold there. He in his broken English and Jen and I with our broken Italian spoke to him as he told us how the shoes and purses were made…it was a pure delight to do business with him! We rode the train back to Rome ... read more

9 Oct 2007 This morning, we traveled to Florence and arrived mid-day with enough time to shop and have lunch. We saw this fabulous open-air market and decided to take a look around. And we were glad we did! This market has the best deals on Pashmina scarves that we could find in Italy! We talked the venders down and purchased multiple which also helped us to get a good deal. After shopping, we worked up an appetite, so we went in search of “something different” as up until now we had eaten strictly at Italian cafes. We came around a corner and found a family-run Greek restaurant! It was wonderful to eat something with a different taste! Our main reason for traveling to Florence was a chance to see “The David” and not one of ... read more

8 Oct 2007 This morning began with a trip down to the Roman Forum and Palatino Hill. Royalty lived on the hill overlooking the Forum where the “commoners” would gather. The Forum is rich with architecture from well before Christ to the Renaissance. Lots of annoying “Roman” dressed people wandering around waiting for you to take a picture with them so they could charge you for the pleasure! Many tour groups roam around the Forum listening to all kinds of explanations of the things seen here…we listened in on one while I bandaged my heel (they don’t like you to do that) and the tour guide was explaining a structure saying that it was once a round building that held a table and the “Roman Eternal Flame” who knows if her facts were accurate, but it ... read more

7 Oct 2007 Began the day with one of the oldest churches in Rome, Santa Maria degli Angeli and a look around Piazza della Repubblica. Next we headed to Spanish Steps and up the hill to the park above for some pictures of the whole city from above Piazza del Popolo. We walked down through the piazza to the Mausoleo Augusto which was all fenced up for renovations. We headed out across the bridge named Cavour and down the opposite side of the canal to Piazza del Tribunali and took pictures of the beautiful building there. Next we walked towards Castel San’t Angelo and across the bridge of the same name with statues lined up on both sides. After crossing the bridge in route to Piazza Novana we stopped off for some gelato. I picked out ... read more

6 Oct 2007 We are almost to London’s Heathrow airport and I must say my flight was quite nice. My gluten free meal arrived and did not disappoint. My meal included baked fish, rice, and spinach; I also had a side salad and a tasty gluten free roll it was all topped off with a brownie! British Airways does a great job with special dietary meals! As a side note, I took my bag down at the end of the flight and there was a shopping bag on top of it that I didn’t know about and I hit the guy under the bin in the head with the bag! I was mortified! London’s Heathrow airport has what they call a “Departure Lounge” I believe it is really a ploy to get you to spend lots ... read more
