I read your entire blog - twice- and am intrigued by traveling with OWA. I am disappointed of their dates available for traveling. What would you differently? What advice would you give someone looking into OWA and African travelers?
Thank you....I enjoyed your writing and insight,
Molly.
Hello Molly
We joined the truck in Cairo and stayed with it until Capetown but there were just 8 of the 20 or so on the truck who did that. Others joined or left as we travelled down. It really depends on the time you have and what your particular interest. I believe some of the trucks time their trips to have reasonable weather although they do change their timings according to the political situation.
There isn't much we would do differently. The trucks from the various companies are set up differently. Some have a separate cabin for the drivers. Ours had the drivers in with the passengers. I think that is a better arrangement and gives an opportunity for everyone to get to know each other.
We camped in tents most times. For us that was good. The single people don't necessarily have a tent to themselves though and some on our trip found that a little difficult at times. There are also areas, particularly through Sudan and Ethiopia, where water is in short supply and you may not be able to shower too frequently. 'Wet wipes' and the like came in very handy and it would be useful to stock up on them before hitting Africa.
If you get the chance to go I don't think you will regret it. We enjoyed although it is likely that for our next trip to that part of the world we will travel independently. In most places it isn't too difficult.
http://www.panoramicsearesort.biz Wow the place looks so serene and beautiful. If it weren't for your blog, we would never know about these places. Cheers
Terrific to see you traveling again! Glad to read about your family trip. How wonderful that you were able to pull everyone together...even the ones with agendas-- hidden or not. That was excellent customer service on the car rental. We have not been to Japan yet so I enjoyed reading about the traditional housing. Always good to include a funny story....loved hearing about your car getting locked up. Great stuff.
Welcome back to traveling... we've missed you, but after three years on the road you deserved a break. Traveling around Japan with family members, with the bonus of speaking the language, sounds like the perfect Christmas. So what's this about 40 years ago...time to fill in some history for us.
That's a Wrap! D&P it\'s been great travelling the world through your Blog and it was even greater travelling along with you and sharing experiences through a number of those countries such as Malaysia, India, Turkey, driving out of Germany to Czech Republic, driving through Austria to Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Hungary, Slovakia, Cuba and catching up with you for an evening of yarning & drinking in Belize...and TB\'s chance to meet up with you in Brussels. We also can\'t forget the great pre-Blog travels through China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Canada and Alaska. Thank you! As we head out in a few weeks for 5 months of travels in Europe (mostly eastern and central) we\'ll think of you. Love T&T
what a journey I'm glad you did the wrap up - have enjoyed all the posts over the years and being able to follow the journey. Going to miss all those random packages turning up at our place though - it was like alternative travel Christmas most months...
Rose Petals on the Bed I remember a bed like that!!! We are back into the hum drum of daily life. Earning some extra cash to go off again, but not yet. Darwin to Perth was fabulous. I am just completing a journal of our trip that might be of use to future campers. Bali for 2 weeks - was a bit of luxury before returning home. Hope your house building plans are under way. All the very best to you both, Donna & Peter xxxxxxx
Great Wrap Up! What a great summary and well set out (I would not have expected anything less!) A good guide for those planning similar travels. A book with photos is a great idea. And I can't wait to read your blog on housebuilding - equally entertaining, I'd bet.
This was a true labor of love...passing this information on to fellow travelbloggers. Good luck with the house building. And then we hope to see more travel. I was going to correct your description of yourselves as rather oldish, but I guess we are both at that age and can\'t deny it.
Congratulations on a superb one thousand days! This is a very helpful and detailed essay, especially those Six Rules for Travellers. Enjoy spending your time in one place on the Sunshine Coast and if you ever visit Brisbane, we might be able to meet to swap stories and travel suggestions!
Haha - indeed! I can't think of anything less appetizing in the morning than an industrial pre-prepared breakfast sandwich. Nothing is perhaps less suited to the microwave than egg-patties (as if eggs should be pattied at all) and frozen/soggy biscuits. Bacon on the other hand ... well, guilty as charged as far as the left side of the photo goes! Although it is a bit of a pricey luxury; it's usually cold cereal and tea/coffee to start the day for us.
http://www.couponcodesindia.com/Airbnb.com/ thanks for sharing this informative blog post on travel, it gave me a great idea about the world trip which i will surely plan soon. thanks for all your guidance, Keep writing such blogs. http://www.couponcodesindia.com/Airbnb.com/
Great Wrap Up Glad that you enjoyed the visit and want to come back. Keep checking the concert schedule at Red Rocks, and then let us know when you want to come back. We should have room as we will be empty nesters by the end of August.
Dave and MJ will be passing through here in early August.
We will be in Sydney from 14-16 October on our way to New Zealand. Our time is cut short because we are spendind 18 days on a cruise from Honolulu, via the South Seas islands. Sorry we won't have time to see you. I plan to do Australia right on a future trip.
A great wrap up! Good to see you blogging again. Your post made me chuckle as you shared your impressions. I always feel sad for travelers who come and only see a couple of the big cities because from our perspective they have missed what our country is all about. Thank you for taking the time to take a good look around and thank you for your friendship. We look forward to a day when our paths will cross again. Great photos.

A Swag? We will send a photo. It is basically a bed that you can carry. Ours is one of the flasher ones but we have spent many nights in the bush in very basic ones.
Our travels over the years have often sought out those places that we haven't yet experienced. We have loved chasing new places, but there is a change underway. We continue to enjoy experiencing other cultures along with their food, beverages, history and ways of life but now, having a little more freedom, we will also make more effort to seek out out such things as music events and festivals, particular natural attractions that we have missed and places where we can better appreciate the history of a place and its people.
The attraction of the road less travelled and the place less visit... full info
