Apparently high altitude means I wake up early and don't get hungover. Either that or it's shoveling decadent Mexican delicacies down my throat every five minutes. Regardless it's time for a blog! After a week of anxiety about whether or not we'd make it out due to Mexico given a) my horrifying travel luck and b) the weekend blizzard dumping another foot or so of snow on Boston (which already had around 6 feet over the last several weeks), Chris and I met at the airport around 11:30 Friday afternoon for our 1pm flight to Dallas where we would be connecting. I ran into a chorus friend who happened to have Admirals Club Access and invited us to join him so we spent a good time in there having a free beer before grabbing some food ... read more

Our last morning in Porto we did the usual breakfast and shower routine, then checked out and left our bags downstairs while we did one last loop around the city. We hit up the post office, bought our train tickets, and grabbed a couple sandwiches for the train ride. We also popped into a church that had been closed before, the Igreja da Miseracórdia, a 16th century rococo style building/façade and a pretty gorgeous interior. It was once again gloomy and rainy, but at least in Lisbon it doesn't seem to be raining. Vamos ver. Given our previous issues with the trains here, I held my breath as we traveled the one stop from São Bento to Campanhã on the suburban line. If I understood correctly, using the Porto transit card would be fine since we were ... read more

Feeling well-rested after turning in early, we went down to breakfast and then to the São Bento train station to catch the suburban train to Guimarães. Guimarães is famous as the birthplace of the first independent king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques, and is another UNESCO World Heritage city. This would also take us to a different region of Portugal, the Minho, which is also the birthplace of vinho verde. I'd be needing some after the ticket debacle that ensued. thought I understood the ticketing system correctly and, using our multi-purpose transit ticket, I got two tickets to zone 8, which Guimarães seemed to belong to. Once the ticket man came around, however, this was not the case, and am awkward 5-minute exchange occurred between us. From what I understand, that multipurpose card worked only within greater ... read more

Today we got up a but before 9 and headed downstairs for breakfast, which was a drastic improvement from the other place. There was basically a station of just cakes and cookies, yogurt, cereal, cold cuts, and breads. You can guess which one Chris went to. After breakfast we showered and headed out for the (rainy) day. Since 10am was a bit abrasive for port tastings (not at all, just trying to keep up appearances), we headed northeast to Rua Santa Catarina to check out the main commercial strip. We first stumbled upon the Mercado Bolhão, a giant wrought iron marketplace. The stalls were awesome - fresh fish, live chickens, flowers and herbs, fruits and vegetables, you name it. We even chatted with a little old lady at a linens stall and ended up with a ... read more

Today we woke up to overcast skies and a bit of rain, so it seemed like a good day for our 3 hour or so train ride to the north to Porto. We packed all of our stuff, had breakfast, and were out by 8:30 to catch the metro toward the Gare do Oriente, from where our train would be departing. Getting there and getting our tickets were straightforward, so we had time to spare before boarding at 9:39. The train was pretty standard - it was an Intercidade train, so one step up from the Urbano train we had been using to get to Sintra and Cascais from Lisbon - that basically meant that we now had a tray table. It didn't seem as though the assigned car and seat meant anything, especially since the ... read more

Last night we once again had a bit of trouble getting to sleep on account of some man screaming outside. At first I thought, how nice, some late-night Fado! Nope, just repeated yelling of the same unintelligible, though somewhat lyrical thing. We still managed to get up a bit after 8 and head down to our gourmet breakfast of assorted breads, yogurt, and sliced cheese. Once showered we started to make our way West toward the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, the National Azulejo Tile museum. Lisbon's azulejos are iconic and ubiquitous throughout the city, so it was interesting to see their history and evolution. The word itself comes from the Arabic 'azzelij' or 'az zuleycha' which means small polished stone. It was cool to see the various styles and influences, from Arabic geometric patterns to Eastern ... read more

Day three started a bit later thanks to Lisbon's SLE soccer team having won the Portuguese title. We lay in bed for literally hours as young guys screamed/chanted and blasted air horns. I got up naturally around 10 thinking it was dark and dreary, but Chris had shut the shutters so it was actually gorgeous out. We'd also missed breakfast, so we'd have to grab something at the train station before getting on the train to Sintra. Well, the train station ticket window and automated machines were a shitshow - I really hope that things return to low-key with tourists once Easter Monday is over. After waiting 30 minutes in line and missing two trains, I figured I'd have Chris see if he could get through the gate with our metro pass, since a train symbol ... read more

Day two was supposed to be rainy all day long, so when we got up at 9 and it looked the same as when we'd arrived - just somewhat overcast- we were relieved. We headed downstairs for breakfast, since it ended at 10, and sat awkwardly with the various Europeans in the breakfast room. Breakfast was cereal, yogurt, cheese, and a few bread/pastry things along with coffee and juice. Could be worse! Once showered and ready we went downstairs and toward the Alfama, one of the few central districts to survive the 1755 earthquake that decimated much of the city. The Alfama is a multi-level maze of narrow alleyways, plazas and corridors that captures the Lisbon of centuries past - traces of Romans, Moors, and Crusaders are around every corner. Instead of walking, we opted for ... read more

Oh hey, back in Portugal for the first time since 2006! With direct flights on SATA for under $600 we really didn't have a choice. ... We left for the airport around 6 for our 8:50pm flight figuring it could be a madhouse with all of Boston and the surrounding school systems having April vacation. Well, this was indeed the case, with dozens of school groups everywhere, except that most of them were foreign. Our second unforeseen enemy was Holy Week, since most Western Europeans seem to get a full week of vacation for it. Security took at least an hour to get through, and when we finally got through and sat down at Cisco Brewery for dinner and a beer we were told that were out of food on account of the busy day. For our third day in Switzerland we decided to head an hour or so west to the canton of Luzern in central Switzerland. The capital city, also named Luzern, sits on Lake...you guessed it...Luzern! A very historic and picturesque city nestled within the Alps, it seemed like a no-brainer to pay the 50 buck round-trip train ticket and see it for ourselves. The train ride was very quick, maybe 45 minutes - transportation in and around Zurich has been extremely easy and efficient, a nice change from Malta, and Boston for that matter. The forecast had said rain rain rain (we even contemplated popping over to Liechtenstein instead, but it was the same) but luckily it was nothing more than snow flurries on and off. From the train station it took some 30 seconds to reach ... read more
