Just turned 50 and retired. Taking my 13 year old son on a cross-country trip and trying to visit all 48 states. Our home and classroom is the 27' Nomad Travel Trailer we bought used for $6k. Our lab is America! Math, Spelling, Grammar, Science, Reading, and American History! We left October 3rd, 2011, from Northern California, drove to San Diego to visit Grampa Lloyd, then across the Southern California Desert into Arizona to Phoenix, Flagstaff and New Mexico through Gallop to Albuquerque to visit my sister Cami. From here we'll be traveling from state to state in search of adventure and discovery. Follow us if you like and see the places we've seen and read about the adventure we're having.

Hasta Lasagna!

This is a long blog...from Texas to Michigan to Florida, so there's a lot to write about. We hope you enjoy it... When you drive from the near bottom of the state of Texas, you’re about as far south as you can go in the contiguous (48) mainland states. Only below Miami, Florida south through to Key West is further south. We really liked Texas and especially the San Antonio area. Did you know that Texas is the most populous state only after California? 22 million and growing to California’s 36 million and shrinking. And I’ve read that of the 36 million Californians, only 11 million citizens pay taxes. 1 This is not a political blog, but I thought it was interesting that there are more people in California not paying taxes than live in the ... read more

When we left Albuquerque, New Mexico, it was snowing. They desperately needed the precipitation Conner and I bought with us both times we came through here. We headed south through the heart of the state on I-25, we saw absolutely beautiful country. The temperature is very pleasant this time of year…short sleeve weather. In the middle of the state, we turned east at San Antonio (still New Mexico) on Highway 380 to Carrizozo and the Valley of Fires. You can see the lava flows from ancient volcanoes and how the 2000° F molten magma cooled and hardened in place as it coursed its way 1.5 miles wide and 20 miles long across the desert. It still looks like it is liquid. I’ve seen lava before, but not like this. From there, we went south along the ... read more

From the Pecos River in the heart of the Santa Fe Wilderness, then north on I-25 to Raton, New Mexico on the eastern edge of the same wilderness, and on again to Trinidad, Colorado, the terrain changed dramatically. High mountains full of pine, oak and aspen trees, to flat land with forever views and little to no trees. From Trinidad, we drove northeast to La Junta (La Hoonta), Colorado, and then straight north to Sidney, Nebraska. Sidney is the home of Cabela’s headquarters and is right on I-80. It’s like the ultimate hunter/fisherman/outdoorsman’s paradise. From there, north through the pan handle of Nebraska to Scottsbluff. Scottsbluff is a landmark that early American pioneers looked for on their way out west on the Oregon Trail. On the Nebraska quarter, there is an image of Chimney Rock. It’s ... read more

New Mexico really is the “Land of Enchantment”. Albuquerque is quite a beautiful city. Located at the base of the Sandia Mountains, near the middle of the state, with nearly 900,000 people, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. The temperature while we were there for about 10 days averaged around 75 degrees fahrenheit. The exception was two days of pretty good rain. My sister said it hadn’t really rained since December 2010! It rained in Sonora, California the day we departed on our journey, in San Diego, the second day out, and the day after that in Albuquerque. Perhaps we brought it with us? We liked Albuquerque for its Old West charm, it’s metropolitan, trendy shops, restaurants and café’s. If you want it, Albuquerque has it. A real blend of old ... read more

If you had the time, money, ability, and support of your spouse, family and friends, would you take one of your children on a take-your-time, no deadline, cross-country trip and homeschool along the way? Your answer is either an enthusiastic, “YES!” Or a bewildered, “What, are you crazy?” Sherry and I have four kids, Cameron 22 living at home, working on his bachelor’s degree while part timing it as a Starbucks barista. Cheyenne is 20, attending community college and working as a cashier in a department store while she too lives at home. Carina is 17, a senior in High school and star varsity water polo player and swimmer. Sherry is working as a Registered Nurse and not yet able to retire. I, however, retired in June from public service with the criminal justice system after ... read more
