| 15th December 2009 Bigbrother | yes! I did it many times. - From: Trying too hard. yes! I had experienced acupuncture many times, I broke my 4th finger(ring finger) of my right hand when I was a senior in university. I experience it for the first time. and I had many time acupunctures to relax my tensioned muscles of my back and shoulder when I had trained a kendo. the kendo is very hottest and aggressive exercise when duelling with an opponent. after a duelling, I got many bruise in my hand, arm and shoulder. to kill the pain in my hand, arm and shoulder, sometimes, I had gone to Korean traditional clinic. now I stopped my kendo training. the acupuncture is very effective treatment. I think. ): |
| 14th December 2009 Shutterbug1218 | - From: Trying too hard. It sounds like you provided a good support system for your student. That is great. It is easy as a teacher to get caught up in the rhythm of teaching and just leave students behind. I'm glad he had you to talk to. The acupuncture was really amazing. Especially the needles in my stomach. It was the first time I felt tension leaving my stomach, my muscles just began moving around. Have you ever received acupuncture? |
| 14th December 2009 Bigbrother | Give you a big smile! - From: Trying too hard. To shutterbug1218 Acupuncture-new word to me- , the treatment which you received, isn't it a Korean(Chinese) traditional medical care to use very thin needles? I think this medical care is very useful to relax tightened muscles and to kill temporarily the pain of muscles due to overburden exercise-probably your overloaded yoga? -. many western people think that this treatment is not scientific. but this treatment is very popular in Korea, Japan and China. you are really almost Korean. You can now enjoy Korean traditional medical care in addition to can taste korean traditional rice wine and can write Korean. Today, my student who taught 6 years ago contact with me. He moved to Seoul one year and six months ago. after his father committed suicide 2 years ago, he suffered a heavy depression and stopped his studying. he was a student of Dae-gu science high school. one day, his mother telephoned me to help her, "My son want to meet you and talk to you. can you help me?" I counseled him to overcome a severe trial of his life. we talked each other six year ago memories. I encouraged him restart and resurrect. but I couldn't gave him any solutions. I just talked to and hugged him. my tears ran. It was very difficult to stand running tears. finally, this student overcome a severe trial of his life and he succeeded in entrance exams of Korea University and Yonsei university in Seoul. his major will be bio-chemistry and technology. now he must choose his one university. I am very glad to received this news by my cell phone. he is very excellence in math and science. when I taught him 6 years ago, he was very clever, excellent and courtesy boy. so far, He remember me. I can never forget him. TODAY IS GOOD DAY! this is Big brother. |

| 10th December 2009 Bigbrother | Your life is very sound! - From: Rolling with it... This article gave me a good chance that I understand your life and sense of value. In spite of your young age, you have your own tolerable and accurate viewpoint about your society and the outsied world. Bravo! your life. as your mother's reply, you are really beautiful both inside and outside. Many Korean people haven't concern to inside beauty-for examples, a goodwill, a generosity, a tolerance to other people- , but have concern to outside beauty-for examples, a skinny or a thin, a tall, a good clothes, a good shoes and a white skin as much as a original white man-. I think you have sound mind and sound body. In addition to, your writings in this blog gave many korean young men and women including me a lesson of life. your life is very progressive, independent and shiny like a sun. I read your article with all my concentration. frankly speaking, I am older than you but I do respect you and your life. Thank you very much. Shutterbug1218. Bravo! your life. |

| 4th December 2009 Mom | sounds beautiful .... - From: Frosty ^^ but cold ~brrrrrrr~ .... love you and hope you are enjoying your frosty winterish weather :) |
| 4th December 2009 Bigbrother | A chilling winter is near at hand! - From: Frosty ^^ As you say, a chilling winter is near at hand. How are you going? I am still fine except for my troubled left eye. After a vaccination campaign of my school, another four kids hit by swine flu virus. two girls and two boys hit. they are on detention 7days in their house from Dec.1st on. I guess that this swine flu is stronger than a immune body in my kids. I wish this guessing is not true. How's the swine flu situation of your school? I wonder? and Are you vaccinated? this is Bigbrother. |
| 13th November 2009 Bigbrother | Take care! - From: Coming to South Korea... as an English teacher I was vaccinated against swine flu on Nov. 9th. and All of kids except for 4 kids in my school will be vaccinate against swine flu on Nov. 25th. Although the timing of vaccination is somewhat late, what a luck it is! the mortality rate with swine flu in SoKo getting higher and higher. I think it is very dangerous situation in the present time. I must report the everyday situation of swine flu contamination of my school to the upper administration office. I am a charger of swine flu monitoring of my school. so I must be vaccinated earlier than any other people in my school. I am healthy. So far, 5 kids was hit by swine flu in my school. they had a regular dose of Tamiflu. now, they luckily recovered. one kid can't go to school yet. He is on detention in his house for 7 days. I had read 68pages of "Report to the president on U.S. preparations for 2009-H1N1 Influenza" reported by Executive office of the President, President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. August 7, 2009. According to a plausible scenario of this report, 2009-H1N1 influenza cause between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths in the United States, concentrated among children and young adults, lead to as many as 1.8 million US hospital admissions during the epidemic. After reading report, I was shocked and scared. Like your country, Many people in my country may will be death to swine flu during this winter time. Take care yourself not hit by swine flu and I recommend you being vaccinated against swine flu in near health clinic if you possible. It is certain that swine flu is more lethal on children and young adults as scientists' expectation. This is Big Brother. |

| 9th September 2009 Laura Boffa | - From: A little bit more detail... And an end to quarantine. Uhh, not to change the subject from Swine Flu, but... YEAH, GO TO INDIA WITH TAN! That will be so sweet if you can swing it. And I don't know that this will necessarily make you feel better, but Sunny, Paul's co-teacher in 멸치똥, thinks your Korean speaking is adorable and that there is no way that any Korean man wouldn't fall in love with you talking like that. :P Also, I actually had a dream last night about eating ice cream in Korea... |
| 7th September 2009 Shutterbug1218 | Anonymous... - From: A little bit more detail... And an end to quarantine. I've heard from one of my students today, that to date, only 3 people have died in South Korea from the flu. That is something amazing. Also, the same student was telling me about a scientist in South Korea who is working on the vaccine. The scientist gave a lecture showing how he made the vaccine so that other people can use the same model. My student said that he read in an online periodical that the scientistr injected himself with the vaccine he created even before it was tested on non-human animals as a precaution for the line of work he is in... This is second hand info, so I cannot say how accurate it is, but it is interesting none-the-less. Thank you for your opinion too. I'm glad the government is taking precautions and I hope these measures continue to prove affective. |
| 7th September 2009 anonymous | my opinion about Swine Flu - From: A little bit more detail... And an end to quarantine. I agree to your opinions. I can feel that you have a sense of balance in your opinions. I think that it is not your prejudice but your own view about Korean people's reactions to Swine Flu. I think your opinions is more logical than "a Korean's opinion". but It is true that many korean people have shock and fear about pandemic of Swine Flu in Korea. due to the shortage of vaccine of Swine Flu in South Korea and the inability of Korean government to do fight with invisible virus, Swine Flu, we, Korean are more scared than any other countries in the world. |
| 6th September 2009 Shutterbug1218 | I can see your point^^ - From: A little bit more detail... And an end to quarantine. A Korean, I appreciate your comment. There is validity in being concerned, totally, but paranoia is never a healthy choice. I can't speak for any other country in the world and I can only speak from the small bubble in South Korea that I live in, but this is what I have witnessed. I wouldn't call my assessment 'cultural prejudice.' I have nothing against Korean culture and I don't believe it is Korean culture that is imbibing the obsession with the flu. Just watch the new, any news around the world and it is being discussed. Many countries are taking precautions. I just can only speak for what I have witnessed, which is of course, subjective because it is from my perspective, as all writing is from someones personal experience. When I referenced 'Pharma Companies and the media' that was an international reference. This is a global pandemic. I guess I should have been more specific, siting "multinational pharma companies and global media," my apologies. I looked up the mortality rates as of Aug 30th: Region Cumulative total as of 30 Aug 2009 WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) cases 3872 deaths 11 WHO Regional Office for the Americas (AMRO) cases 116046 deaths 2234 WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) cases 5031 deaths 21 WHO Regional Office for Europe (EURO) cases Over 46000 deaths At least 104 WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia (SEARO) cases 19362 deaths 188 WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO) cases 63895 deaths 279 Total case Over 254206 deaths At least 2837 *Given that countries are no longer required to test and report individual cases, the number of cases reported actually understates the real number of cases. (http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/) I'll admit these numbers, as written above by the website, are not 100% acurate, but I do believe they shed light on the reality of the situation... I have been trying to research the seasonal flu and the pandemic flu, but am not finding the answers that I am looking for. There are a lot of projected mortality rates and discussions on the impact of the economy and social institutions. There are references to past outbreaks, which I believe to be a great jumping off point, so as not to repeat the happenings of the past. I am not seeing current data about death rates outside of the organization that you directed me to. These estimates are also very broad. I guess I will just have to sit and wait for more research to be collected. Also, I believe precaution is good. It is necessary. There is a difference between precaution and obsession. That was my only point. Also, I have immensely enjoyed the gift of time bestowed upon me by this current situation and if by not going to school, in some round about way, I have stopped the spread of H1N1, then awesome^^ because I still did everything I would have done otherwise and am now more relaxed and excited about the coming year. |
| 5th September 2009 A Korean | Better be paranoid than sorry - From: A little bit more detail... And an end to quarantine. I don't mean to be condescending or anything, but you should NOT regard H1N1 in the same light as "just another virus." A disconcerting number of expat teachers seems to think just like you do... I can guess why, but you shouldn't let your cultural prejudices cloud your judgment. Not this time. who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu |

| 4th September 2009 Bigbrother | welcome back to SoKo! - From: A week in quarantine Welcome back to South Korea. Don't you feel time-difference? these days, swine influenza, new type influenza A(H1N1), is swallowing south korea little by little. to hinder spreading of SI, in my school, All pupils are taken a temperature of body heat by teachers. if the temperature of body heat is 37.8 degree centigrade over, the pupil is banned from a school-building. the pupil is informed to health center and must go to hospital. I am very anxious to spreading of SI in south Korea. Until now, luckily, there in no patient pupil contaminated by SI in my school. Beeee Be careful! and take care of yourself! |

| 29th April 2009 Bigbrother | Good Songs! and cheer up! - From: Sooo... I searched for "let my love open the door (to your heart)" in Youtube.com site. I knew that this song is sung by the singer, Pete Townshend. He is a great singer, I think. this song made my mind alive. I watched and heard both "let my love open the door(Dan in real life soundtrack version)" and "let my love open the door(House/Cameron version)" in Youtube. and the song, "Alive" sung by Sa ding ding(Chinese singer) is very impressive. this music is looked like mixing the Tibetan, Indian and Chinese culture. It is very fantastic and dreamy. but frankly speaking, lyrics of this song in Youtube.com are not clear. I can't understand lyrics. lastly, the song, "One blood", reggae sound, sung by Junior Reid is very meaningful song. I hope we can be friend without racism and colors of skin. thanks to you, I knew these three good songs. thanks! I want you to watch and hear this song, "Why can't we be friends-Bridge to Terabithia" in Youtube.com site. Good luck to you. Although my English is very poor, I will struggle on with English. to my view, Your Korean writing is very good, I belive you will keep on learning Korean. |
| 28th April 2009 Amanda | Breathe - From: Sooo... In.... out.... in.... out. *repeat as necessary* You'll do it. You're prob further in a language than I am. I seem to be at a similar point in my welsh. Although I have no one to listen to. I'm trying to find a different book... just as a chance in pace. Got a film that is partially in welsh, but I seem to have hit a wall as well. Hopefully we can both break through the wall and move on in our studies. {{{{{HUGS}}}}} |
| 27th April 2009 Bigbrother | I want you don't have a anger to city government - From: Getting back into the weekly grind... Late afternoon, yesterday, I passed by your biking road under construction on my way to "Sangdae hot spring" in Gyeungsan. after watching your disappeared biking road without any previous notice, I could understood your disappointment of your biking road to your school. I think that this road is very important to you, but to city officials didn't important as much as you. In Gyesunsan city, soon or later, a sports festival for all Gyeungsangbuk-do people will be held. so this city government officials are renewing many sidewalks in Gyeungsan. It is very sorry that this process is may not for Gyeungsan citizens but for visitors. It is definitely not resonable, but these happenings are very often occurred under administrational orders in Korea. I hope that your biking road will be recover and renew as soon as possible. now, your biking road is disappeared. as my view, it is very dangerous to bike with rushing cars on your road to your school. I recommend you to get on bus or carpool with your korean teachers until your biking road completed. please, I hope you will do as my advice. Take care yourself. please, Always, "BE CAREFUL" on your biking. some korean drivers think their car is more important than pedestrians' and bike riders' safety. |

| 20th March 2009 Bigbrother | Your life is good life! - From: Life's Lil Pleasures... Unofficially, so many abortion committed in Soko. but officially, there is no abortion. because the abortion except for special case, a pregnancy due to a rape and a malformed baby, is crime(close to the first class murder) in Korea. It is also a kind of Korean's duality. It is very regrettable. some Korean is very cruel to new born human LIFE. and some have no responsibility to their babies. Do punish these people or many abortion will continue. but really, prosecutors in Soko are generally generous to this crime. this is my opinion about the abortion in Soko. You will have a busy next week. have a good official trip your students in Pohang! You yielded your seat for an older woman. although you can't communicate with perfectly each other in Korean. the older Korean woman must felt "your Jeong"(your merciful heart). It is certainly that You have a good "Jeong" in your heart and mind.:e I think, Good conversation is without words. |
| 17th March 2009 Bigbrother | spring is near at hand! - From: BUSY... I think taxi drivers were rudeness to you when you were in hurry. It is very pity that taxi drivers did object to your getting on taxi without a rational reasons. I would sometimes did experienced like you when getting on taxi. at that time, I felt that it was most insulted to me. I hope that taxi drivers in SoKo will be more generous to taxi riders, especially, to foreigners. I also am looking forward to cherry blossom which is near at hand. I will do plan to go out with my co-workers to enjoy cherry blossoms in Mt. Palgong in early April. My Princesses, My Cherry blossoms! Wait for me! I wait for you to see you from last harsh winter on. this is big brother, I am expecting your new stories. You, "shutterbug1218" are good lady and my good English teacher in this travelblog. |

"Jeong make us do this". Jeong is a difficult problem to me. |
| 12th March 2009 Bigbrother | About "Jeong" - From: Cultural Differences... Konglish and "Jeong" You catch it, Jeong(Å), exactly in your Korean life. In Korean society, they have too much Jeong about their family, their relatives and their co-workers. but some people have too cool mind to thier neighbors as well as other korean people. In real city life, there are many persons have no attention to their neighbors. this is a "duality" of Korean people life. sometimes the younger men automatically bowed to their boss's illegal orders as well as their boss's legal orders. | 7th March 2009 Shutterbug1218 | Teacher^^ - From: Life behind a desk... "sun sang neem..." I'm going to get flack for the way I phonetically wrote that, but that is the way it sounds to my ears every day, the tens of times I hear it a day. The romanization of Korean has it written differently, but for the pronounciation in the US ("neem" is more acurate than "nim," which would sound like "him," ie a male, which is not the sound that is being used in Korea. Holler) If it is a professor though, it is a different deal: "kyo su."^^ Also, I miss you lots Lady Jamz!!! SWAK! |

| 13th February 2009 Big Brother | May you get a good trip to Thailand! - From: Thursday ponderings... I hope you will get a good trip to Thailand and Cambodia. and refresh you mind and body. I think that you spend much of your time in doing yoga. I dare recommend that you will do dynamic exercise- table tennis, badminton, treckking-. It is just my recommedation. don't take it seriously. Yoga is very tranquility. In reverse, I think you need doing dynamic sports and hobby. when you will trip in Thai. so will do I in Japan. Good speed! |
