19 Oct - the newbies board Priscilla, our overland truck, for the first time...there's so much room now that there's only 13 of us rather than 22! Two seats to myself to stretch out, what luxury! We spend the day driving through the Mpumalanga region in South Africa. We stop off at a gold mining village called Pilgrim's Rest for lunch. It's like something out of a Western film. In the afternoon we stop off at Bourke's Luck Potholes - yet another remarkable geological phenomena on my travels...surreal cyclindrical rock sculptures created by whirling water. Next is a stop at the [View Full Entry]

12 Oct - we hit the road early and just keep on truckin until we reach the South Africa border about 6pm. The potholes along the way are horrendous not to mention dodging goats and cattle. Errol continues to drive, determined to reach Twana Lodge, just outside Pretoria where we'll be staying for the next few days until heading to Joburg for the start of the next trip. I head to bed about 11pm ie the cabin of the truck and Errol finally pulls over about 1am. 13 Oct - although we hit Monday morning rush hour traffic at Pretoria, the [View Full Entry]

9 Oct - a enjoy a long lie while most of the others go on an early morning game drive / BIRD spotting. Another new experience today, a river border crossing (my border crossings during my travels have now included by plane, truck, train, foot and boat!). We need to get off Priscilla and walk onto a small ferry to cross the Zambezi leaving Botswana behind and entering Zambia. There's not really any queuing system for Priscilla and only two lorries can get on per trip however, we eventually all get over, go through the visa rigmarole and it still only [View Full Entry]

8 Oct - quite a few hangovers today after the shenanigans of the night before so I'm feel v smug for being sensible and having an early night...it does happen occasionally! Drive to Thebe campsite at Kasane, set up camp then take an afternoon game trip by boat. This has been the best way to view animals to date. We've used loads of different and interesting methods so far including using Priscilla, jeeps, by foot and flying over the Delta. But this way we get up close and personal without disturbing them. We spot many BIRDS, crocs, water buffalo, egrets, hippo [View Full Entry]

3 Oct - oh dear god, I wanna die. Worst hangover of the travels to date with a v long drive and border crossings ahead, urgh. Say farewell to Ulf and the others before curling up on the bus. I get picked on all day...and most of that night...but somehow manage to leave Namibia and get into Botswana in a hungover haze. We arrive in Ghanzi...and...THANKFULLY, we get the option to 'upgrade' to a San Bushman grass shelter so don't need to wrestle with the tent, PHEW. James volunteers to be my new roomie, poor guy ;) Can't face dinner so [View Full Entry]

Hi y'all. The blog is falling by the wayside, there is soooo much to see and do here in Southern Africa that blogging is the last thing on my mind....this prob means all my entries will be out of order when I do get round to updating it properly, but just wanted to update you on my overlanding to date... There's 22 of us on this part of the trip, although a few leave us tomorrow and some join. Currently in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. We're all getting on really well, it's a young crowd and are being looked after [View Full Entry]

29 Sep - we drive through the Damaraland region today stopping off at Twelyfontein to look at Bushman rock engravings and a petrified fossil forrest....Yaaaaawnnnn. Sooooo boring, such a come down from yesterday's adrenalin rush. Great rock in the area just wish I could climb it rather than walking round it, lol. It's Team B's day off from duties so we head to the campsite bar for an early start on the Savannah ciders :) Later that evening the staff perform traditional Namibian song and dance for us including some audience participation, go Bruno go!!! Head back to the campfire with [View Full Entry]

Lunch stop with the locals

23 Sep - early breakfast of tea and cereal then strike camp for first time. All packed and boarded bus ready to go by 7.20am! Long drive through South Africa to reach border with Namibia. Lunchtime stop at town called Springbok. Stop for supplies at Spar (!!). I get 1.5l of local red and white wine for 70 rand in total ie GBP4.50, everyone seems pleased with my choice, esp Errol. We cross our first African border. As a seasoned traveller, I'm quite au fait with these now! Two stage process - all clamber out of Priscilla, fill out departure form [View Full Entry]

21 Sep - WELCOME TO SOUTH AFRICA. Both me and my backpack arrive in Cape Town and make it hassle-free to the Tulip Inn Hotel as planned, phew!!!! While driving into Cape Town I'm amazed by the views of Table Mountain...didn't expect it to dominate the city sykline as much as it does. Too early to check-in to hotel so head off into the great unknown, armed with my Lonely Planet. Find Long Street which is backpacker central. It's a Sunday and v quiet with all the shops shut (ah, remember the days when that used to happen in Scotland...). Find [View Full Entry]

Quick update Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town
21/9 - just a quick entry to say I'm still alive :) Had a great two weeks meandering around Morocco and am just about to update the blog re this trip. Arrived in Cape Town this morning, will join the GAP tour tonight then have 21 days of overlanding and camping round South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, woohoo, bring it on. I'm starting to get used to life on the road. Despite 4 hours in Heathrow yesterday (en route from Marrakech to Cape Town) I didn't have any desire to jump on a plane to Edinburgh, still early days though... [View Full Entry]
