It is now August 14th and I leave to go back to my little university in Juneau, AK in exactly one week. This summer has been so up and down, full of some amazingly fun experiences, and full of a little heartache as well. But for the most part, it was a summer well spent and I got to meet a LOT of new people, do some very interesting things, and learn a LOT about myself. As a college student 9 months out of the year, I find it EXTREMELY hard to come home to Idaho and be mellow. After life [View Full Entry]

It is July now and I have been back in Idaho, hanging out with the parentals and working with the fish and game for almost 2 months now. It's crazy how time seems to go by SO SLOWLY during the week and then all of a sudden, 2 months have gone by. So life here has not been as bad as I thought it would be. It started out a little slow, a little rough, and a little boring with nothing for this college kid to do. But once I started working 40 hours a week as a fish clipper [View Full Entry]

In my opinion, saying goodbye is the hardest part of life...especially when you say goodbye to someone that you know that you may never see again. I packed my bags last night, cleaned my small room that I had entered only 5 months ago, and looked at the space around me. It was just a room. Another person would move in, another girl would sit at that desk, leaning over her books during the early hours of the morning to cram for that last minute exam. Another person would jump onto and off of that bed and attempt to try to [View Full Entry]

It has been 8 days since I got my PADI Open Water certification here in Wilmington, North Carolina and I am still ecstatic beyond belief...I can't believe I haven't added this to my travelblog yet. I came here to North Carolina to spend a semester in the sun and get a little taste of the Southeast US, to make friends, to take my first class with 200 people, to play softball (we don't have it in Alaska), and to enjoy a whole new college experience. But along with all of this, I finally got the chance to get scuba certified [View Full Entry]

This past weekend, I went farther south into the green world of Athens, Georgia. It was my first time out of North Carolina since I came down here on exchange, and it was such a fun experience. The UNCW softball girls rented a couple SUVs (2007s) and headed on the road on Friday. It took about 7 hours to get from Wilmington, NC to Athens, Georgia but the ride was a lot of fun. The first thing was saw was a place called 'South of the Border' that lies right across the North Carolina/South Carolina line. It's a cute little, [View Full Entry]

As an NSE (National Student Exchange) student to UNC Wilmington, I got the priviledge of going on a trip with all of my fellow exchangers from across the U.S. to the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks is one of the most amazing beachside, tourist attractions in North Carolina. It spans for hundreds of miles and is made of a couple of islands...one of which (Ocracoke) is only accessible by ferry or plane. We were quite an eccentric group with representatives from: Alaska (me), North Dakota, South Dakota, Massachussets, Utah, Oregon, Montana, South Carolina, and New Mexico. The first stop on [View Full Entry]

This past Easter weekend involved a little historical trip to Fort Fisher here in North Carolina. As most know, the South played a big role in the Civil War. About 12 miles from Wilmington is a small fort known as Fort Fisher that served as a mainland supply route for goods to the Confederate army and Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. After a large battle in January of 1865, the loss of the route made it impossible for the Confederate army to succeed in the war. During our visit, we saw the cannon on top of a small [View Full Entry]

So I went to the beach this past weekend and have been thinking about the various distinctions between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. As far as I can tell, they are both blue (lol, go figure) and both cold in January. Although the Atlantic has beaches that appear to be much flatter. Most of the beaches I've seen at the Pacific Ocean have large cliffs and large rocks that the waves hit and splash all about. So not ALL of the beaches look like this, but the nice ones up North do. So, since the Atlantic appears to be [View Full Entry]

Wow! I can't believe that it has already been over a week since I've been here in North Carolina. I was so excited to get down here and then when I finally did, it didn't start off so well. You see, as a freshman at the University of Alaska Southeast, I decided to apply for an exchange. Not sure just where I wanted to go internationally yet, I decided to apply for a national exchange to see a little bit more of the country that I live in. My first thoughts were North Carolina and Maine. It's no surprise that even [View Full Entry]
