Kari, thank you so much for keeping me in the loop. I'm loving your blog and reliving the excitement and feelings of exploration of my study abroad through your travels and adventures. (You make me feel a bit younger than iI am.) I'm glad you are taking advantage of the opportunities around you! I am looking forward to seeing your smiling face and offering you a big hug when you do return!

walking on snow/ice - From: walking in the snow
You can walk boldly, you can walk timidly, or you can run and slide... but just think about this little sister... EVEN if you fall... it is how graceful you are when you slip and fall and how quickly you can get your ass back up that matters. Learn how to handle the pain! And take it with a smile! I LOVE YOU!

Blue Ice - From: Era Comp Expeditions: whale watching & Tracy Arm. Also, a sad goodbye...
Alaska is awesome, isn't it? I just got back a few days ago and am now looking at everyone else's photos! I did an all day trip to Tracy Arm a few years back. I absolutely love the blue ice. Although I took tons of photos this recent trip, my best iceberg photos are from the trip a few years ago: http://eclypso.com/places/us/ak/ice/index.html There's a link if you want to see more blue ice. Like you I was on a small tour boat. Its really the way to go and get up close. I hope to go again someday and hope you do too! cat

Kari, that's so awesome that you're in Norway. I went to the Harvest Festival today in Juneau and met someone from Trio, and she told me you were studying abroad. Best of luck, you are so independent and strong to step into a new world like this...I hope you have a lot of fun there. -Audrey PS I am leaving Juneau in a week (!!!) and know I will miss it SO MUCH...and I haven't even been here that long. Anyways, email me and tell me what you're up to. :)

I have been to Tracy Arm numerous times - From: Era Comp Expeditions: whale watching & Tracy Arm. Also, a sad goodbye...
Being from Alaska, I have seen first hand the effects of global warming. I have witnessed glaciers calve off in monumental proportions. In fact, I found a disturbing, yet spectacular movie that shows global warming footage of calving glaciers. Huge chunks of ice breaking off into the ocean! You can find this film called “Alaska, The Tracy Arm Experience” on Film Baby HERE: http://www.filmbaby.com/films/4148 I highly recommend buying Alaska, The Tracy Arm Experience. Watch the glaciers disappear before your eyes and show your friends and family what is really going on in Alaska.

Please don't be sad. it breaks my heart when you are upset. =( I have been on top of the mountain with Dad, Christina, John, and Luke for the last five days out of nine. That's why I don't have my phone or I would call. I bet the wedding was beautiful and so were you. I love you!!!

Cool, sand dunes? - From: The Atlantic vs. the Pacific...
I am in BC Canada on the Pacific. Yeah, we have more big rocks and not as many sandy beaches (all pebbles). White Rock is great. So cool, there are sand dunes on the Atlantic side? I guess the Atlantic ocean has been around longer so it's ground up all it's rocks already. But really, tidal pooling? I am not sure if this is what Sharklady was talking about. But tidal pooling (or tidepooling) to me is NOTHING like whatever morTIMer described. It is looking for marine creatures along the shoreline trapped in little pools the tide leaves when it goes out. They are often hiding under medium sized rocks. I love looking for mini crabs and hermit crabs. Starfish are rare though. It is very fun. Sharklady said the Carolina coast was flat ( : with no rocks), so she couldn't do tidepooling. See now?

Hi Kari - I'm happy to hear that you are having a great time. It's amazing what a freeway and a little sunshine can do for one's spirit. Hopefully by now you have figured out how to maneuver through the horseshoes. Hang in there and keep us posted. We're finally moved into our new digs. It's not so bad just really off the beaten path. Take care. Lisa B.

Little fences - From: The Atlantic vs. the Pacific...
Hi Sharklady, I am glad to see you are still posting photos for us to enjoy. (I sent the comment about your Alaska photos some weeks back). The little fences are there for conservation purposes as I understand. No cliffs, but we do have sand dunes on the east coast. Apparently, these small fences break just enough of the surface winds to help preserve the sand dunes, which of course, make up an important part of the wildlife habitat. I was a lifeguard on the Virginia Beach oceanfront in 1974.I saw first hand the effects of development on the beach conditions, and how it contributed to erosion and dune destruction. I don't know what tidal pooling is. I guess I have seen pictures of people relaxing in what looks a comfortable little pool in a beach rock formation. Is it something like that? Anyway, glad your studies are such that you can get away for these photo ops. My daughter is at VCU in Richmond, VA. and she has just left on a spring break to New York City with a girlfriend and their mothers! I hope to see some photos of their trip to Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty. All the best toyou Sharklady - and keep up the good work! -secureitdalby

Large thing? Monument? - From: Down in North Carolina
Again, very nice photos. You are down in my part of the country now. I live in Virginia and went to William and Mary (B.S.Biology, 1977) Don't forget Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) for graduate studies if you continue on that career path. Anyway, I wasn't sure if you were familiar with water towers of the type shown in your photo, or if you were being humorous! In Virginia, some folks call them "Devil's Doorknobs". Apparently, water held in the tower provides water pressure for local plumbing. With this style, it is much more difficult for budding artists to climb up and paint things on them! I'm going to figure out how to work the U.S. map to show which states I 've visited. So, is winter in NC almost as good as summer in Alaska? Study Hard, tim
