Hey everyone! My name is Kari and I am a grad student that loves to travel and go off on adventures. In 2010, I graduated from the University of Alaska Southeast with a B.S. in Marine Bio and minor in Anthropology. I'm now living life in Lansing, Michigan as a Spartan and pursuing a PhD from the Department of Zoology. I am a big sports fan who loves animals (mainly sharks), scuba diving, and water in general. I hope you all enjoy my blog and I love meeting new people too, so send me an email if you have any questions or comments! November 22nd 2011

Yes, this update is insanely late!! In fact, it is November and I actually went to Seattle during the first week of September, but because I like to update the blog in order, I'm going to write a little about my trip to Seattle and then fill people's inbox with yet another update of everything that has happened after Seattle. I could combine the two together, but since I am a woman of many words, that is not a good idea. Seattle! I am a child of the Pacific Northwest so I was WAYYYYY excited when I got up at 4a.m. to fix my hair and head to the airport for my early flight out of Lansing. The cab showed up and I trudged outside into the darkness and rainy morning of course forgetting a few ... read more

Update: THIS IS BLOG #100. WHOOHOO!! =) I just can't believe how fast time seems to be going by. I only have about a week and a half before classes start here and then two weeks until AFS in Seattle where I'm presenting some research. I'm really looking forward to seeing my family since I haven't seen them since Christmas. Things have been kind of exciting around here though. I moved into my very first apartment. It's a small studio, but just the right size for me. They even re-did the outside with all new paneling and the inside is a bright white with nice new appliances and carpet. The same day I got back from the field, I rented and drove my first UHAUL and moved ALL of my stuff in about 2 hours. I ... read more

August 13th 2011

Wow, I realized that I am very behind on my blog updating! Can it really be August 13th already? CRAZY!! Anyways, this one is going to be a little more brief, but I had some good photos I wanted to put up. During the fourth of July, we were working in the hatchery, but got off early and spent the afternoon napping, watching the Alien trilogy, and then wandered to the tractor field to watch the fireworks. For such a small place, Onaway had pretty good fireworks. It wasn't the most eventful holiday and a persistent June Bug attacked me not once but twice making me run around like a pansy in the tractor field, but overall not too bad. A couple days later, I got a mini-vacation and headed to Traverse City to see some ... read more

Nerves and butterflies are fine - they're a physical sign that you're mentally ready and eager. You have to get the butterflies to fly in formation, that's the trick." ~Steve Bull It's already July?!? Where is the time going? It's so crazy because the weeks seem to fly by, but some individual days seem to creep by. It's my day off and I have spent it sleeping in, watching Grey's Anatomy (season 6), and spent most of the afternoon here at Woodwinds browsing the net and attempting to teach myself about mixed models and multivariate analyses. Sounds fun, huh? Well the rest of my days off this week will be much more exciting, but I wanted to update my blog about my latest adventure. In early June, after returning from Duluth, John looked at my ragged ... read more

June 28th 2011

I've never spent much time in Minnesota. In fact, the only thing I really know about it is that it's cold in the winter and has a rich Viking (Scandinavian) influence. So why did I go to Duluth? This past semester, I put in for a LOT of grants, fellowships, and scholarships. One of my lab mates even came up to me and said, "Are you ALWAYS writing?" It sure seemed like it and it does makes you a better science writer which I know I have some work to do. I think my advisor agreed because after requesting a letter of support, he insisted that I pass everything through him before I send it onward. Of course that rule hasn't really stuck given that he's usually very pressed for time and I have applied to ... read more

June 1st 2011

It's the first day of June and hard to believe. I'm not sure if it feels like August or it feels like the beginning of May, but either way, my sense of time has completely diminished. I'm not in Onaway although that is where I have been for the past month. I'm actually currently in Duluth, Minnesota, but I'll save the reasons why and the photos for my next entry. This entry is about the last 31 days. Is that all it has been? It has felt like 4 months...not 4 weeks. Why? One word: Sturgeon! But let me start just a few days prior to that. On Friday April 29, I was finished with all of my classes and had just one final paper to write up. So I packed up my room, moved all ... read more

"Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts" -Buddha Wow, I haven't written in awhile and it's just crazy that it's been a month since I returned from Alaska. I feel like there has been so much going on, but it also feels like time is creeping by. Usually, for me a month feels like a year, especially when tough things have happened, but now it's still only early April. Is the end of April ever going to come? I hope so. I have been looking forward to it for a LONG time. Why? Well...because my classes will be done, my first year of grad school will technically be done, I can move to the sturgeon site, and because I can just live and breath sturgeon...it's also going to be sunny ... read more

March 14th 2011

This is going to be a very brief and short entry. I finally made it "home" today, back to Lansing and tomorrow it's back to the grind with lab work, experiment prepping, meetings, presentations, ordering stuff for the field, a car appointment, classes, and so much more. While I left Juneau in tears, it was the most gorgeous sunset and a beautiful goodbye that I had to write a short entry (and Lisa wanted to see these two pictures hehe). This blog has become my outlet in so many ways and has helped me reflect when my hand was shaking too much to write. And while today has been a mix of emotions, I feel very at peace as I drink my tea and post these two pictures. I made a phone call and had a ... read more

"I thought if I could touch this place or feel it, this brokenness inside me might start healing, out here it's like I'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself, if I could just come in I swear I'll leave, won't take nothing but a memory..." (ML) I can't believe that my trip is almost at an end. It has been such a blast here in Juneau! I got to do so much more than I thought I would and even experienced some new things. After my last update, I went camping with Les, Louie, and Sara. On Monday morning, we headed off to Douglas and hiked up to the Dan Moller cabin which was about a 2.5 mile "more difficult" hike from Blueberry Hill that has an 1800 feet elevation gain. It ... read more

Nope, this is not Sarah Palin's Alaska. This blog entry is about mine and about 30,000 other people that call Juneau their home. It's not my current place of residence, but it's definitely the place that I feel excited to see when that plane touches down and I know there is a big hug waiting for me in that newly remodeled terminal. And this is my spring break... I've only been in town for about three days now and so much has happened that I decided to split my spring break trip into two blogs. I can't believe how much has gone down! Some good, some downright horrible, and some kind of shocking. But I'm going to focus on the good bits before I call it a night because it has been a busy few days. ... read more
