It's been awhile, and I have more thoughts and stories from AK which are forthcoming. But for now i'm just letting you all know i'm still alive and kicking, no bears got their paws on me and i'm back in the lower 48! (i left AK on the 1st of July but have been busy / lazy and haven't taken the time to create this post, I figure it's past due) I'm in Portland, OR...Hillsboro actually. I've decided to call this home for a bit, I rented an apartment here, so i guess i'll be growing some roots at least until the early part of 08...that by the way is really weird to write, the whole 2008 thing. Anyway, I have decided to actively pursue a job, possibly leading to career in the outdoor guiding arena. ... read more
I typically get Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s off from my park duties. This past week, I was feeling the need to travel and explore. Initially my thoughts were to head South. However the weather was not being very cooperative, so I decided to head North instead. After studying the map, I chose the Taylor Hwy (SR 5) as my path of travel. Off I went, East through Tok then up 5 towards Chicken, AK. It was a nice drive through some mountainous terrain, along the way I pulled off the road and made a tasty sandwich for lunch, while Otis got to run free and explore a bit. After about 60 miles the road went from being paved to a, for the most part well maintained dirt road. Shortly thereafter, I reached the Chicken city limits. ... read more
My 2 Parks Shane Breakie Well, I arrived at my new home for the next couple of months. I'm in my cabin at the Donnelly Creek State Park, about 30 miles south east of Delta Junction, AK. Kind of funny, I have phone and internet access..through my air card (which cuts in and out at the most inopportune times), but no running water or electricity. It's a cozy little cabin, about 10x10. there is a wood burning stove for warmth, although I'm not too sure I'll need to use it, the temperatures have been quite pleasant so far. Day time has been in the sixties the past few days, and since it is daylight nearly around the clock those temperatures don't fall too much. It is rather windy at times, which hasn't been too big ... read more

Well it’s been a while since last posting and I can’t say that I’ve done much traveling. It seems that Portland and I have grown attached to one another over the past couple of weeks. Mike and Kate have been gracious enough to give Otis and I a place to call home while here (their old apartment), and I have been helping them move into their new home. In addition to that, I’ve taken care of some errands and explored the city a bit in my free time. I have to mention Oregon Spring Company and Mike, who got me out of a small jam. It seems that in my packing for this endeavor, I managed to slightly overload the truck. I noticed from the beginning, it was sitting somewhat lower in the rear than I ... read more
Ahoy! Well Otis and I have made it to "The City of Roses" Portland, Oregon. We arrived a couple of days ago and have been chillin' with the Castleberry's, my friends Mike and Kate for those of you "not in the know". I'm diggin this area so far, it's been a bit odd being back in a highly populated city...since I left SA the largest pop. town I had been in was only about 10K people, until Bend (75K) and now Portland (around half a mil). Traffic lights and general congestion are two things I was really enjoying, not having to deal with on my trek up until this point, but oh well, it's not that bad. I am getting a bit spoiled, as I'm going on a solid week of sleeping in a real bed, ... read more
I made it Oregon... It was a long few days of driving across Utah, Nevada and half way across Oregon. I covered, 500, 600 and a short 250 miles today. It's been an interesting twist, as I've had to adjust to temperatures colder than I had anticipated. I know that I am well prepared to deal with these climate changes but Senor O, while not having a problem, is not adapting as quickly. He's doing fine, but had the shivers sleeping in the cold for a spell. Not to worry, he is fine as pie now! We find ourselves in Sisters, OR. Don't feel bad if haven't heard of it. Sisters is a small town about 1700 population nestled just northwest of Bend, and I have stumbled upon an oasis! I'm currently in a fantastic room ... read more
After too short of a time in Sedona, it was time to continue on. I left on Thursday April 12 and proceeded to head North. About 50 miles and just outside of Flagstaff, AZ the temperature had dropped from 65 degrees to 31 and snow had begun falling. I stopped briefly to take in the surealness of the moment, then continued on. The entire day of travel was somewhat strenuous, as I had been for the most part stationary the previous week, taking short day trips of 20 miles or so and traveling mostly on foot. It was nice to be mobile again but I had thoughts of turning back and taking Kate up on her offer of a nice condo to rent and setting up shop in Sedona...I can’t help but think there is ... read more
Pics and Goodbye from Sedona North America » United States » Arizona » Sedona By Shanerb April 12th 2007 Mi Casa Shane Breakie Sorry for the lag in updates. I've truly enjoyed my time in Sedona, and it is difficult to leave this city. I'm going to take that as a sign, and be sure to make a return visit here at some point in the future. I have a few stories to tell, but those are going to have to wait. It's just about time to hit the road again. I'll be heading north, up through Utah, then to... read more
So I traveled through NM and into AZ today, I was planning on stopping around Flagstaff, until I drove through town, and didn't see much that intrigued me, so I decided to continue on to Sedona. Now I've heard a ton of great things about this city, but was a bit apprehensive at first. Don't get me wrong it is an absolutely beautiful piece of country, however it is crazy right now with tourists...one thing that i don't really get along with. I drove about half way through town, seeing nothing but people and NO VACANCY signs. All the camp grounds I had passed were also full, sometimes beyond capacity. I was beginning to think that i would have to continue on down to whatever the next city on the map turned out to be, when ... read more
