Shadow Man - Alec Sharp

Alec Sharp My name is Alec and I am from Eastover, SC. I am the father of six and along with my wife and kids we raise fainting goats on our little farm.

My first motorcycle was a 1974 Honda CB250T that I bought for $200 in 1981. That was the first of many bikes. This blog will allow you to share in my passion for motorcycles and the places they can take you.

My current bike is a 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit VT750DC. I purchased this bike new in May of 2008, after years of being without a bike, to be a simple run around bike to save gas and have a little fun on. I had forgotten how exciting traveling on a motorcycle can be. In the last 12 months(August 2008 - August 2009) I have put over 10,000 miles on my little Honda (AKA: Thumper), traveling to Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana and lots of places in between.

I enjoy riding in Iron Butt ( www.ironbutt.com ) events and am a member of the Blue Knights ( www.blueknights.org ). To date I have completed 2 IBA SS1000 and a BB1500.

11-07-09 A good night sleep was traded for Christmas money. I was called into work off duty the night before the RTE that I was hosting in my hometown. Friday was scheduled so I could be a good host on Saturday, but as fate would have it my schedule changed. On Friday I ended up working at my landscape business from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. having just enough time to get home and jump into the shower to do police work from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. I was in bed by 7:30 in the morning and three [View Full Entry]

10-30-09 Every year I try to make the Shadow a little more comfortable. This winter I have some neat things planned to make it easier to stay in the saddle for longer periods of times. We all know that the only way to put the miles on the odometer is to keep the bike in the road. This past riding season I was able to add a small aux. fuel cell, XM Radio and a good used GPS. The biggest issue I had when I did my Bun Burner ride (1500 miles in 36 hours) was that my legs would cramp [View Full Entry]

The alarm clock went off at 4:45 a.m. This usually would not be a problem but I am currently on night shift at the PD and this is the time of morning that my body is getting ready for bed, not getting up. On top of that, this is the first out of state trip I have made on the bike since my accident and I was a little nervous; causing me to not sleep very well. I was scheduled to meet my friend Andy in Graniteville, SC at 7 a.m., which meant that I had to be on my way [View Full Entry]

10-21-09 Tonight I start midnight shift at the PD and was in between sleep schedules. I woke up at 10 am and was met by my youngest middle son wanting to go for a ride on the bike. I checked the weather and WOW it was great riding weather, clear blue skies, a light wind and temperatures in the upper 70’s. I have wanted to take a ride over to St. Matthews, SC and have lunch at the Town and Country Restaurant on Bridge St and then take a quick ride down to Santee, SC to visit Santee State Park. This is what the seat looks like installed over my stock Honda seat.
Over the last year and half my wife has complained about the little 7 ½ inch seat on the back of the Shadow. So I went out on a quest to find a replacement seat to provide her comfort and enable her to take longer rides with me and Thumper. I checked out Mustang seats, Russell’s and even companies that would rebuild the Honda seat that came with the Shadow. All the seats I found were, in my opinion, way out of the price point I had set for the Shadow. If I had a Goldwing or a large touring bike [View Full Entry]

On Sunday 09-27-09, after church, I decided to finally check out the motorcycle after getting it back earlier in the week from Honda of Sumter. There were a few things that I still had to do and I worked on them little by little all week long. The main thing that had to be done was rebuilding the mount for the XM radio. I used Testors glue to glue the plastic pieces back together. It reminded me of all the model airplanes I built when I was younger. I also had to reinstall my Hella FF50 driving lights. I found a [View Full Entry]

On 09-12-09 Cindy (wife) and I left Eastover, SC and headed to Chapin, SC for a little BBQ with members of MTF (Motorcycle Tourer's Forum). We road in Cindy’s Explorer because the Shadow is still getting repaired from the little spill I took on Garners Ferry Road a few weeks back. You would think that with the thousands of Shadows Honda has built over the years that the side engine case would not have to be placed on backorder. So it felt more like we were on the motorcycle I turned off the air conditioner in the truck and road with [View Full Entry]

Sunday morning, August 30th 2009, started out with lots of excitement. I had spent 2 months planning an Iron Butt Association certified all South Carolina Saddle Sore. I sent a lot of time planning and re-planning the route. It was and still is a great route. For those who do not know what a Saddle Sore is, it is 1000 miles ridden in 24 hours or less. And I took it one step further and made sure that my route did not use the same road twice and did not cross over a road already used. The route would allow me [View Full Entry]

First ride with my new GPS and XM radio.
Sunday 08-23-09 I got off of work early and headed off to see the start of the 2009 Iron Butt Rally. I pulled out of the driveway in Eastover, SC at 4:00 p.m. and headed out for Spartanburg, SC. This is the first time I have taken a trip using my newly added XM radio and Garmin Street Pilot GPS. The XM radio was a great addition. The time flew by with the addition of music and sports. The Garmin was a different story. Betty, the voice from the GPS, was talking my head off. I wanted to take Shop Rd. [View Full Entry]
