Introduction We went to Turku on our Scandinavian way from Russia to Germany. The First day: Moscow-Vyborg. The second day: Vyborg-Turku. Look at my Travelblog "Turku (VolumeI). The Sea centre (Forum Marinum) The Sea centre, more precisely, the Museum of trading and military fleet, up till 1999 settled down in a former observatory at Vartiovuori hill, and recently it was moved on a new place - to a building of a former granary (1894) near to the castle. Expositions tell about all aspects of sea history of Finland: development of its marine sea fleet, seafarers and pilots, ship-wrecks, work of sea patrols and customs, etc. There are presented models of various vessels, mines of times of the Second World War. Introduction We went to Turku on our Scandinavian way from Russia to Germany. The First day: Moscow-Vyborg. The second day: Vyborg-Turku. The city of Turku is an administrative centre of a province the Western Finland, is located in a southwest of the country in a mouth of Aurajoki River. The city is widely stretched on the both coasts of Aurajoki close to its mouth. The river crosses Turku from northeast to southwest. A lay-out in the city centre is rectangular - all streets last either in parallel the river, or perpendicular to it. Central square Kauppatori (i.e. Market-square) is located in a right-bank part of Turku. All the main sights are concentrated at Aurajoki's coasts. Slottsbacken Tre kronor The monumental building of the Royal palace of "three kings" (Slottsbacken Tre kronor) towers on the opposite side of Rikcsdag. The word-combination "Tre kronor" is known to everyone who heard though something about Sweden. "Tre kronor" is partially opened for tourists (cash departments are in the western court yard). However it's difficult enough to examine it entirely for a day: there are more than 500 rooms with a set of ancient Gobelin tapestries and pictures. Some museums enter into a palace complex. Royal Palace The fortress where Swedish kings lived appeared on the northern side of the island in the XIII century. However numerous fires destroyed almost all buildings of that time. Introduction We visited Stockholm on our northern way from Russia to Germany. It has turned out a little bit more long way on a distance. But the opportunity to get acquainted with three northern capitals - Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen - has weighed down and we have chosen this very way. We have not regretted about the choice. All three capitals are worthy more careful studying. We had only several hours for excursion in Helsinki and Copenhagen and the whole excursion day in Stockholm. Kauppatori square Kauppatori square means "market square". It is located closely to the sea. The square was formed on this place in the beginning of the XIX century. Kauppatori is the brightest and the brisk city square. The market rustles there; thousand of tourists from nearby port arrive there. It was authorized to arrange the markets on this place in 1639, and in 1743 the first fish fair took place there. An operating time of the markets - from 6.30 till 18.00 in the summer every day except for Sunday. Fish products, products of local national crafts are on sale there: unusual hats, dolls, souvenirs, knitted and wooden products. Introduction The central square, church with a cemetery and a building of a town hall settled down in area of the present Senatorial square (Senaatintori) in 1600-1700. Buildings surrounding the square began to build up again after strong destructions during Northern war 1700-1721. When Helsinki became the capital, the city centre was completely reconstructed under the plan of the native of Helsinki J.A.Erenstryom and under projects of well-known German architect K.L.Engel, who worked before in Tallinn and St.-Petersburg. Karl Engel created a number of impressing public buildings in style of neoclassicism. The building of the State Council, the main building of the Helsinki University and the Lutheran Cathedral are really beautiful. Introduction In 1293, during the III-d crusade organized by the marshal of Sweden Torgils Knuttson, regent of juvenile king Birger, the Swedish armies, having destroyed the strengthened Karelian forpost, established a fortress Vyborg on the island in the Finland gulf. Vy - means "sacred", Borg - means "a fortress". So the translation from ancient Swedish Vyborg means "a sacred fortress". The first construction became a tower of Sacred Olaph - quadrangular in plan tower of the Vyborg castle. Time passed… A settlement expanded under walls of the castle. In 1403 a fortress Vyborg received the status of a city. Appearance of the castle changed also. In XV century it by the right was considered as the most beautiful castle of Sweden. The Cathedral Square in Kremlin The architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square in Kremlin developed in XV-XVI centuries. It is a unique monument of Russian history and culture when the uniform Russian state was created. Buildings of secular and cult character are included into ensemble of the square. The Cathedral of Assumption is the most ancient temple of the Kremlin. It was constructed on a traditional place where wooden and stone temples were situated in an antiquity. The Cathedral was built under the decree of Great Moscow prince Ivan III in 1479 by Italian architect and engineer Aristotel Fiorovanti. The architect repeated in the construction traditional forms of Russian temples (the prototype is in Vladimir).
