I pick up where I left of on my last blog. On my final night in Cambodia I made the decision, rather than spending a couple of days on an island, I would move on to Saigon. Will, Jamie and I took a bus from our hotel across the border where we would part ways in Ha Tien, Vietnam. The Ha Tien border crossing is relatively new, so the infrastructure isn’t quite up to scratch yet. The road in Cambodia leading up to it was nothing short of a dirt track and I thought the bus was going to bog in the mud. Will came up with the idea of playing bus surfing to pass the time. It was fun trying to remain standing in the middle of the bus isle, but impossible nonetheless! Once through ... read more

I had a great time in India, Nepal and Bhutan but am now ready for a cultural change in the many countries I hope to visit here. I have no schedule but initially hope to travel from Bangkok, Thailand to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and down through Thailand and its islands, Malaysia, Singapore and then Australia. I am currently toying with a few other countries but I’ll see how time treats me here, I have three months. My arrival in Bangkok was shrouded in the much publicised red strikes around the city. I decided to pamper myself in a fancy hotel for my first night. I was able to share the experience with my family using skpe. I... read more

Asia April 4th 2010

I finally have finished my Southern Asia leg of my journey. The highlights definitely being the Taj Mahal and Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan! I have had a great time but look forward to South East Asia tomorrow. I could never have envisaged seeing or doing many of the things I have experienced. As previously stated, India was incredible, indescribable, terrifying and unforgettable. I wouldn’t return to Northern India in a hurry but definitely would give Southern India a lash. I have made many friends on my first GAP trip and I hope they all are doing well back home or onwards on their travels. My initial reflections about Nepal have greatly changed three weeks into my stay here. I was blown away by the beauty and peacefulness in west Nepal, particularly Pokhara and the Annapurna Mountain ... read more

Asia » Bhutan March 28th 2010

I left the tranquillity of Pokhara on a fairly dated tourist bus early on Friday morning. The journey was advertised to take approximately 7 hours. It eventually took over nine hours and was definitely not for the faint hearted. The roads climbed high along steep bypasses and down the many gorges where doted the skeletons of buses that made the ultimate plunge. If my auntie Elizabeth had been on the bus with me, she would have been on her knees praying a few rosaries intermingled with a few swears here and there. It was hairy stuff and when we finally reached the final summit I got my first glimpse of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal! When I say that, I mean I got my first glimpse of where Kathmandu was supposed to be but was hidden ... read more

Asia » Nepal March 21st 2010

It cost $40 to cross the border into Nepal, where we stayed our first night in Lumbini, the birth place of Buddha. There was almost an instant transformation of the countryside and of the people. Nepal was definitely much greener and the people had a more oriental appearance. We expected a reduction in standard of living, expecting Nepal to be much poorer than its neighbouring power India. This proved to be wrong on the surface anyway, the major towns and countryside being much cleaner and organised. It was definitely a welcome surprise, because by this point of the trip everyone had just about enough of the dirt and grime associated with India and its massive overpopulated urban areas. Our hotel was positioned just outside the perimeter of the Buddha birthplace complex called Lumbini. We had dinner ... read more

Asia » India March 9th 2010

India, where to begin? I touched on it in my last blog but I have to reiterate it, India is indescribable. It just throws up surprise after surprise and I love it!! I toured across the north of India, from Delhi to Jaipur, then Agra, Orchha and finally Varanasi. We travelled by car, bus, train (Day/night), Tuk Tuk, Rickshaw, horse and of course loads of walking. The first night of the tour involved a little paper work, an introduction to our tour guide Bhupendra (Bu) and a short walk around Delhi and the India gate. There are 16 members in the tour, English, Americans, Canadians, Aussies, a girl from Denmark and a couple of Paddy’s. Bu is Indian and a true character! He has excellent English and loves a laugh. He has also visited N. Ireland ... read more

Asia March 6th 2010

After overwhelming support from my family, relatives and friends, I left home to embark on a trip into the unknown. My trip should see me travel through India, Nepal, Tibet, South-East Asia and Australia. By no means a final itinerary but a loose reflection of what I hope to see and experience over the next year. I left Belfast on Thursday 25th February 2010 on a flight to Delhi connecting at London Heathrow. In expectance of an 8 1/2hr flight I paid a little extra to get extra leg room. Do I need to explain my reasoning on that one? Didn’t think so… This proved to be a good decision as I sat beside a Banbridge man working for the BBC called Alan. He was travelling to Delhi to cover a world Hockey tournament. We chatted ... read more
