After leaving the chilled relaxing ways of El Tunco beach it was up early again to catch the bus to Copan, Honduras, entering country number 5 of the trip. The shuttle bus was due in at 6am, and finally got there 7:15am…. We have now become numb to late running buses, and as long as they turn up at some point, we are happy. This journey to Honduras was to be a strange one, in that even though El Salvador boarders Honduras, we headed back into Guatemala to get to Honduras from there, as it would be quicker? I’m always happy when bus routes are amended to be quicker; however after our border crossing incident mentioned previously, we didn’t really fancy crossing two borders in the matter of hours! Turns out however that the bodge job ... read more

Getting up at ridiculous hours for tours or buses has pretty much been the norm for us now for the past 6-7 weeks, and we therefore felt a well-earned break was on the cards for all our ‘hard work’. In particular, this seemed to come to light one evening during dinner, when after a gentle yawn I said to Donna that I was knackered and that it was probably time to ‘hit the hay’ after dinner, to which Donna responded, ‘Mike it’s 7:30pm!’. The days of staying up till silly O’clock at home seem a long way away at the moment, as we appear to be evolving and morphing into what we once feared….morning people! Hopefully, this is just a phase though, and we will continue to try work through it. So, a break from buses ... read more

Next stop on our whirlwind tour of Central America was Antigua. This was supposed to be the better option compared with Guatemala City, as rumour had it, that place was crazy. On the journey down to Antigua, we drove through a town that seemed to resemble the inside of a car exhaust….Hot, sweaty, full of smoke and fumes… this it turned out, was Guatemala City! Looks like we may have made the correct decision. Upon arrival in Antigua, it was clear that that was indeed the correct choice, as it was a far cry from the rough and tumble of Guatemala City. Cobbled streets, great little buildings, and surrounded by Volcanos. These were the qualities of the town that awaited us, and it was just what the doctor ordered. We spent a little time finding a ... read more

After our little mini chill out in El Remate, we continued on to the town of Coban. We stayed here as it is a good stepping stone in order to get to Semuc Champey, the famous clear water pools of Guatemala. Again the bus trip to our destination was full of antics and craziness which you may have realised is a bit of a running trait here in Central America. This time the driver decided he fancied a chat with his friend in another bus, and therefore he just pulled alongside his buddies van, being in the wrong lane, and stayed there chit-chatting away until a car came the other way before quickly pulling in and repeating this once the vehicle had passed. Anyway, after a fairly long and dangerous drive, we finally made it to ... read more

Well, we are certainly making headway through the countries now, and have arrived in Guatemala. We got here again via Maya walk, Belize, who took us as far as the border, and then introduced us to the guys from Maya walk Guatemala, who took us from the boarder to the ruins of Tikal. Tikal was another huge Mayan city that is amazingly preserved, and is one of the most renowned sites in Central America. We had a guide with us from Maya Walk, who was again really helpful, and informative, and gave us plenty of facts and information about the ruins, which we couldn’t have got from our guide book. About 20 mins into our tour however, my trusty Havaianas Flip flops decided the climbing of ruins was too much strain for them, and inconveniently snapped ... read more

So our time was up in Caye Caulker, and it was time to head off to mainland Belize. San Ignacio was to be our next stop, and it was right across the country, in West Belize, near the border of Guatemala. So, we got up early for the boat to Belize City, and from there, we needed to pick up the bus all the way to San Ignacio. Upon arrival in Belize City, we took a 5-10 minute taxi ride to the bus station. This was pretty scary. The cab itself was falling apart at the seams, and I wasn’t sure we would even make it to the bus station in this poor excuse for a car. This of course would have been a disaster. It seems Belize City is not the sort of place you ... read more

Caye Caulker Weh I deh? No I haven’t turned off the auto spell check, but as we arrived in Belize, Spanish was no longer required (just as we were getting the hang of it….. ) and English was back, although with a bit of a twist, namely Creole. So, we left Mexico by getting our familiar ADO bus, so Spanish dubbed movies and air con were again on the agenda, until finally arriving at Chetumal, Mexico which was our gateway to Belize. From here, we bought our tickets for the Belize express boat. This took us as far as San Pedro, Caye Ambergris, and from there we went through Belize’s ‘border control, and customs’. Inverted commas are valid here as it was basically a really quick check of the passport, and ‘Have you got any food ... read more

Onto Playa Del Carmen…. As much as I have loved them over the last three weeks, I’m going to have to start the blog with a small gripe about Mexican buses. ‘Enough with the buses Mike, you boring twat’ I hear you all scream, and for this I’m sorry, but it needs to be vented, and that fact that most of you reading this are friends or family means that you will no doubt forgive me for this eventually, and will still read on anyway through pure Love of both Donna and myself, as well as making sure that we are still alive and kicking, which by the way, we are. For thoise reading who are not family members, and who have done this trail, will no doubt emit some sympathy! Dear Mexican bus companies…. Gripe ... read more

Next stop on the trip is Merida which is situated in the Yucatan peninsula in the east of Mexico. The main draw for Merida (for us anyway), is that it’s a good access point to indulge in tours to Mayan ruins, and in this case arguably probably the most well know one in Mexico being Chichen Itza. Those of you familiar with the recent programme in the UK ‘An Idiot abroad’, will have seen this New Wonder of the world, and also witnessed one Carl Pilkington slate some aspects of the attraction for certain reasons….some of which, I’m sad to say, I actually agree with, which is a massive surprise, but more of that in a moment. On arrival in Merida, we decided to take our usual walk around town to check out what’s going on, ... read more

So after leaving San Cristobel, we caught the early morning bus towards Palenque. No major issues with the bus you’ll be glad to hear, although I wouldn’t advise trying to use the toilet facilities standing up on these buses…. After a few sudden stops for speed bumps, and a few bends in the road, I was way too close to wearing my own pee! So anyway, on arrival, we managed to find a decent enough hotel (Hotel Chablis) near town, and went on a wander to find a local tour agency in order to book a trip to the ruins of Palenque. The tour guide we met was a great fella, and straight down the line, which is great when you are in a new place…. He seemed really proud of his town also, as he ... read more
