Screwjack

Discovered the travel bug when I drove across the United States for the first time when I was 17. Further developed it in college when I wrote and edited for Let's Go travel guides. Now 31, I've been a somewhat dissatisfied member of the rat race for just about 10 years. I've found time along the way to visit 24 foreign countries, and I've been to all the states except Hawaii, Alaska, and Wisconsin. Most of my trips have been a week and half here, two weeks there, plus a few three week excursions. A year and a half ago I took a sabbatical and travelled for 6 weeks. That was one of the best times of my life. Lately in between selling my soul to the man and too-short vacations I am trying to figure out how to travel for an extended period of a year or more!

On my first day in Slovenia I only saw the Ljub train station, my hostel, and the bars next to my hostel. I started out early the next day to see the city. Ljub has been described as a mini-Prague, like that city was before it was discovered by hordes of tourists. Based on that I had an image in my mind of what the city would be like. And it wasnt like I imagined. It doesnt remind me of Prague at all, and that disappointed me. Still, Ljub is a nice, very small city. Its center is gorgeous, with beautiful old crumbly buildings (a favorite of mine!), some spires, a couple of neat old churches, and a big castle on a hill. (OK...sounding like Prague...but it still doesnt look like Prague at all, and is ... read more

I arrived in Ljubljana - which I still have trouble pronouncing, and spelling with all those consenants - mid-afternoon. I immediately went off to find and check into my hostel, the Celica. I liked the place right off the bat. As a former prison-turned-artsy-fartsy-hostel-bar, I was expecting something different from your average hostel and I was not disappointed. The place is really clean, has lots of cool spaces to hang out, and everyone is super-friendly. Within around 5 minutes of arriving at Celica, I was in my room - a 12-bed dorm unfortunately as all the smaller, prison cell rooms were already booked. I immediately met two blokes - 42 year old David from Whales and 23-year old Cathal (pronounced Ko-hal) from Ireland. We went down to the Celica bar where we drank a number of ... read more

Oh, I know you may think I made that name up but no - apparently Bologna is all about ass! Gay ass at that! How about that for a teaser? Read on, intrepid surfers... I have been to Italy 5 times before, all for a week or longer - a couple even in August. I had been all over the country but had not yet made it to Bologna so I decided to spend a couple of days there before I hit Slovenia (since it is such a pain in the ass to get to Slovenia anyway, Bologna was a plausible stop over). I mention these previous trips because I want to be clear that I realize a lot of Italians are on vacation in August and I did not expect every place to be open. ... read more

I am entirely packed. Just finished. One teeny backpack that an American airline might even let me take on board with me. Packed really really light -- 2 pairs of shorts, 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of khakis, some underwear and socks. No shoes! Just the sandals I'll wear onto the plane! I never thought I'd be that guy, but I'm excited about it! I was supposed to fly to Heathrow yesterday but didn't. Had a panic attack about the flight. I don't like flying at all despite the fact that I do it an average of 4 times per month. Had a very close encounter a few months ago -- my flight very nearly crashed -- and have been even worse ever since. And then with the terrorist warnings... It overwhelmed me for moment. ... read more

Planning a short Eurotrip

Back when I was a lad, I didn't have tons of money for travel but I still had the bug so I became a de-facto budget traveler. Before arriving at college, I had completed several cross-country (USA) trips in my "classic" 1980 Ford Fairlane. I did a couple of these with a friend, and one on my own. It was great fun being young, broke, and in the middle of nowhere with few commitments and an open mind. After my sophomore year in college, I landed a gig as a researcher-writer for the popular travel guide Let's Go: USA and spent 7 weeks covering a large swath of the country between Minneapolis and Billings, North Dakota down into the Chiuaua region of Mexico. I did it all on very little moula and had a blast sharing ... read more
