Dorothy, Hyo, and I traveled to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. It was quite cold out and we were all exhausted from staying out too late the night before so we were quite unhappy when our bus seats were less than a ninety degree angle not in our favor. However, the trip was really inexpensive and we found plenty of hot milk tea places/spicy noodles/pumpkin bread to keep us warm. The palace temple was beautiful. The tourist part (the temple plus the irrigation stream) was full of grey and blue hues and punches of bright pinks and reds given to us by flowers and paintings. We braved a swinging bridge which swung violently and I ended up being grabbed by two Chinese ladies and helping them across the river. I enjoyed exploring with Hyo and Dorothy. They ... read more

The second day Dorothy and I woke up early and went on a hike through a bamboo forest and on a cliff hike. It was so beautiful. We were almost brought to tears several times just by how beautiful and enchanting the clouds were. Then we went to see several waterfalls (we were able to walk behind one). Then our guide took us to a mountain top temple and we climbed thousands of stairs. The temple was very colorful and beautiful and well worth the climb. By this time we had actually run out of money, and Dorothy accidentally got blessed by a monk who asked for a donation afterward- she guiltily opened her purse and tried to give them all her change, but they just told her not to bother. We ate a fitful lunch, ... read more

Dorothy and I set off on our adventure early Saturday morning. After a five and a half hour bus ride, we reached the town of Yibin where we were quickly hustled the worlds tiniest van and shuttled off to the Bamboo Sea. Our driver was a local who had grown up in the area. He offered to give us a tour and be our driver. We accepted enthusasticlly. It was possibly the best choice we made (besides deciding to go on this adventure in the first place.) He knew of a less expensive hotel and took us on all the best trails. Because Chinese students start school on Feburary 20, there were hardly any families hiking around. We had the park to ourselves, and Dorothy and I giddily enjoyed some of the most beautiful views in ... read more

February 6 was the last day of Chinese New Year and I celebrated it at my Modern Chinese History professor's house. Then Dorothy and I found a coffee street full of small coffee houses that were full of thoughtful Chinese students studying. We enjoyed milk tea and terimesu. I will be blogging about this coming weekend trip when Dorothy and I plan to visit the Sichuan Bamboo Sea!... read more

Dorothy and I made the mistake of sitting down to rest after a long day of hiking around an ancient city. It was not an actual ancient city, mind you, but was rebuilt as a model of one after the large Sichuan earthquake of 2009 destroyed the earlier city. Anyhow, we sat down and people started taking pictures of us, video taping us, and taking pictures with us. I'd say at least fifty to sixty people walked straight up to us, as if we were two metal statues of foreigners and took pictures of us. We were laughing up a storm. I wish I could have collected all of the pictures they took, but by the end I decided something- if you take a picture of me, I will retaliate in kind. So I have quite ... read more

I now know how to make dumplings! My professor of Modern Chinese History invited me to a family dinner at a former classmates house. There were four families there, and the conversation proved very interesting (even if I did not understand half of what was being said because it was being said in Chinese). We played monkey in the middle outside for a while (which I dominated at... not because of my athletic ability but because of my foot advantage).... read more

I am struck by the beauty of a new place, yet also by how much I miss home. This week I found a few American restaurants to quench my craving for chocolate, and have treasured speaking/emailing (especially communicating in English and understanding 100% of what is being said to me) with those back home. I have explored this tiny piece of China and am excited to explore even more in the coming months. The pictures I posted are of a park, enchanted by glowing lights. One of the reasons I was so excited to travel abroad was to experience change. It takes a lot of courage to board a plane, destined for unknown lands. It takes a lot of courage (or stupidity) to leave behind a perfectly agreeable life and venture into a place without knowing ... read more

Getting Gawked

In Chengdu people are pretty polite about checking out the foreigners. I can occasionally (okay more than occasionally) hear the term "white foreigner" thrown around (one of the first Mandarin words I learned). However, when we decided to venture further from Chengdu the looks got less and less subtle. Normally people just stare. Perhaps point a little bit. But in this small town people followed us. When I walked out onto the street- people literally stopped and beckoned for their friends to look at this tall foreigner. We heard the word for "tall" so many times today I would be rich if I got a penny for each time. Child reactions were most epic. They would yell out "Tall!!" to their parents who would also be standing out in the street. It was quite the experience- ... read more

What have I been up to in Chengdu, China so far? Well I have been sampling some of the spectacular food. My personal favorite has been a Tibetan restaurant (partially because it had the cutest kids). The sweet milk tea is to die for! I have also been attempting the language. I should emphasize the word attempting... But because of helpful and clever new friends I soak up a new phrase after saying it incorrectly the first few thousand times. I have also been freezing. I know Grap has been pretty cold too, but the sharp cold of Michigan is different than the lingering wet cold of Chengdu. It is a sort of cold that creeps up the edges of your coat and gobbles up your fingertips. My classes have been interesting, and my professors enthusiastic. ... read more
