As my train pulled in slowely to the station, i peered out my dirty window at the piles of garbage lining the streets. upon exiting the station i was confronted by a pile that neared 4meters high and looked 1k long. its quite unbelievable, as is the smell. but escaping this downtown refuse container, i discovered that much of the rest of the city has faired better, undoubtedly by dumping their garbage else where. being from jersey, i have a more intimate knowledge for this trash problem. This morning i got up at 6:00, showered and made it out the door by 6:30, made the 50 minute walk to the vatican and walked right into st. peter's basilica no problem. it was nice and of course i got yelled at for wearing my hat. then i walked around the corner to the museum where the sistine chapel is. i was there 30 minutes before it opened and the line was already 1k long, no joke. i stood there about 10 minutes and decided it wasnt that important for me to see the museum. i walked the line just [View Full Entry]

I had a bit of a surley night of drinking, and saying good bye to my new little irish buddy, rob. he's headed to naples first, so ill get the low-down on the town from him. Well this is it. the holy land of ancient treasures. Rome baby, yeah! I love this town. i got here yesterday and just sort of got my head around this place. Its magnificent. Today i went to the colesseum, its everything they say and so much more. the line was a bit long, so i weaseled my way to the front by saying id go on a guide tour, then i just slipped in line and paid for a regular ticket. i kno its wrong but i really hate lines and might not have gone in if i had to wait. Everything went accourding to plan, which of course worried the hell out of me. Its cold and rainy today so no beach for bobby. instead ive spent the morning working on some travel and accomadation plans. working with websites in italian can be vexing but im picking up alot of what im reading. i ought to be leaving tomorrow, but dont hold me to that. if theres one thing i was right about, its that any plan i could have made could be shot to shit in an instant. take my falling asleep on the train for instance. that would have blasted any plans or reservations i had in croatia. now i know what your [View Full Entry]

For all of you who put positive thoughts out for me to find my friend, cristian... it worked! yesterday afternoon i gat a call at the hostel from him. he came over to rimini with wife and baby girl(ciao emily) and took me to his village of san archangelo. yesterday happened to be "il fiesta del flur" and the whole town was out and about the town. they were all walking and taking and everywhere i went it was "ciao" and "bona sera" to me, a total stranger. Every once in a while, even the toughest tramp needs a little r&r. For me, Rimini was a great choice for it. Its just before the tourist season here so the hostel is somewhat empty. my room has 8 beds but im the only occupant. nice and quiet. this is aslo one of the cheaper hostels here as its 3 blocks from the beach and next to the railroad tracks. none of which bothers me. the rooms are clean, showers warm. i have a verranda to sit out on, wifi is free and strong, laundry is cheap, people are nice( bonegiornos [View Full Entry]
