Well, I felt like I should probably get a move on, so I left Singapore this morning and caught the bus across the causeway to the mighty country of Malaysia. Yay. I was trying to get to Kuala Lumpur, and you know how it is when you're in a strange country and have no idea what you're doing. I did my best to ignore the taxi touts swarming round outside the customs area -- it wasn't too hard because I couldn't understand what half of them were saying -- but then I got waylaid by one slick dude who convinced me that there were no buses leaving for KL from there, I'd have to go to the bus terminal instead. In my defence, I am new to the ways of con-men. So we get in his ... read more

Early pearly morning t'was when I ventured out to the Botanical Gardens once again to search for little nocturnal beasties. That was the plan yesterday but I got there too late and all the night animals were down and the day animals up. Raining it was, this morning, perfect weather for creatures of the froggy persuasion one would think, but sadly no. One black-spined toad, a little flock of little bats twirling like murderous butterflies as they dealt their evil ways amongst the moths, and the calling of a large-tailed nightjar who (of course) stopped calling and made his unseen departure before I drew near. That was the draw for the dawn, apart for the hundreds of giant gouramis lining the lake shores. Then I headed off to the Jurong Bird Park, where the rain ... read more

I returned to the Botanical Gardens this morning to see what I could see. It was all common stuff of course: plantain squirrels, cute little white-breasted waterhens, koels, flowerpeckers, etc. I fed the whistling ducks with the nutritious fare of white bread crusts. A snakehead came up as well to try out the offerings. The lakes in the Gardens are full of fish -- gouramis, cichlids, catfish, all sorts, as well as millions of red-eared turtles. I saw an Asian softshell turtle (Amyda cartilaginea) too, who was really nice but a trifle perplexed to see me. After I was done, I headed off to Sentosa Island, off the south coast. There's a lookout there labelled as the southernmost point of the Asian continent, which kind of begs the question of shouldn't the southernmost point of ... read more

Its still too hot and I'm not getting enough food. The 'free breakfast' at Cozy Corners appears to be limited to cheap white bread and spreads. Today I went to Pulau Ubin, which is an island off the east coast. To get across you travel on what they call 'bum-boats', possibly because they look like what a bum might use for shelter in an alleyway somewhere, and which seem to be just about as seaworthy. The crossing only took about five minutes which was fine by me. The sea is not my friend, but I had been prepared for the ocean waves by the considerate actions of the crazy bus driver who took me to Changi Village from whence the boats leave. On the way across I spotted a great crested tern. Once on the island ... read more

it has begun... I watched King Kong on the flight over. All I can say is I'm glad I never paid to see it at the movies. What a piece of rubbish. How can a film with so much action be so incredibly tedious? And the dinosaur stampede was the stupidest thing I've ever seen on a screen. Then the woman in front of me tilted her seat back as far as it would go and kept it that way for the next seven hours. Arrived in Singapore at 7pm, and saw some crested mynahs from the plane. Bird number one. I'm staying at a place called Cozy Corners Backpackers. Its a bit of a rabbit-warren of rooms and corridors (the sort of rabbit warren you'd get if some badgers moved in and turfed out all ... read more

I bought a new camera for my trip. It unfortunately cost half the money I needed for living, so I'll probably have to come home early but at least I'll have good photos. Here are some photos from my aquarium, so I can learn how to add them to the site (I'm not very technologically proficient, so I need to practice this stuff).... read more

Only five weeks to go before I leave and already my work "colleagues" are taking bets on how soon I come back, why I come back, and how many diseases I return with. So here are the following reasons for returning early (preferably alive): 1) Dengue fever -- 50% 2) Japanese encephalitis -- 50% 3) Malaria -- 5% 4) Other diseases -- 10% 5) Snake bite (or insect, spider, scorpion, giant centipede, etc) -- 5% 6) Mauled by bear -- 5% 7) Mauled by tiger -- 1% 8) Mauled by leopard -- 2% 9) Elephant attack -- 4% 10) Transportation malfunction (eg, bus crash, ferry sinking, etc) -- 40% 11) Killed by Muslim extremists for being called Israel -- 95% 12) Accidentally shot by hunters (or "accidentally" shot by poachers) -- 2% 13) Murdered for other ... read more
