Asia August 2nd 2009

August 1 The air is fresh, the food is delicious and life is easier. No facebook, no BBC, no CNN no surprise. And recently: no public bus, no photos of any police people, and no entry to temples without a guide. Women can’t divorce without male consent but of course the man can, and lots of mei yu (don’t have) and bu qu (no go). The Dalai Lama means Dalai=ocean of wisdom and Lama=high. And monks wear shoes with their toes turned up so they do not squash bugs. At dawn we went to the gardens behind the Potala Palace and saw sword dancers (many were women), Tai Chi (which I decided to join along and try out the moves myself. I ended up mostly getting laughed at but the smiles were worth it - ... read more

July 26 With nostalgia and relief, we boarded our Ethiopian Air flight to Beijing. We’d learned much, slowly and belatedly, met with much resistance and fearful self-protection but Dandiwad (thank you) India, we had a wonderful time. The traffic and chaos, Bollywood MTV, tabla and sitar music and the melodic rolling sound of Hindi were left behind with the heat and the dust. Of course, our exit wasn’t exactly as smooth as it might have been. Although there were only 13 people on the flight, the check-in hosts wanted to force us to check one of our bags each. Mom was not about to let that happen with-out a fight and after whipping off her hair the host realized that one of our bags was “actually just a laptop” so we were able to proceed. ... read more

July 23 In Allahabad we had a girls day out. Along with the two other girls from our group we went Temple Hopping. We saw Hamnuman (the monkey god) laying down, the underground temple where we made puja (an offering), a three floor colorful temple, a new white marble middle-class temple, and an ashram for the worker’s relief agency. Great descriptions we know, but we had a wonderful, warm hearted Auto Rickshaw driver, and a good time was had by all. We felt very independent and accomplished. Then we took a four hour train to Varanasi (the city of learning and burning and the city of the Hindu god, Shiva.) Shiva is known as the God of destruction and creation and symbolized by the lingam - an erect penis. He meditates on a tiger as ... read more

July 19 Shimla is shrouded in mist. It floats even into your room like breath on a cold day which makes it really fun during the corkscrew turns throughout the Himalayas. We had contemplated wearing the “scream” masks as a group on the Toy Train yesterday, but thought it would have been much more apt to reflect our mood at dinner last night which set a new record waiting for 3 hours to be served. There was a lovely bon fire at the rooftop restaurant. In case you’re wondering what would be the most important things to pack if the airlines only allow you to pack 8 kilos, and you are traveling from the Thai beaches to the snow capped mountains of Everest, for mom that included: (T.M.I., I know) 6 books, and 4.5 pounds ... read more

July 15 While riding our small travel bus 9 hours from Amistar to Dharmsala mom and i discovered 556 different poses to squeeze and squish and mash our bodies into our seat (with out kicking the people in front or to the side of us...mostly in any case). Mom made the trip pretty embarrassing by interviewing the guy next to us for 6 of the 9 hours non stop. As always we had an adventure at meal time. These seem to be what the waiters believe are the rules of the game: People order for other people, change their minds so the kitchen shouldn't make some of the orders, surprises are always fun, eating should be an educational opportunity so serve the tourists things they never dreamed of eating, or ordering, hot things should be ... read more

July 12th The Taj is supposedly a symbol of eternal love but is rather a reflection of “the emperor’s meglomania, and unrivalled vanity than his legendary romantic disposition” - India Rough Guide. The Mughla emperor Shah Jahan had it built as a tomb for his wife after the birth of their fourteenth child. It cost 41 million rupees, 20 thousand men, and 20 years to build. It has 500 kilos of gold. The Shah was disposed by his son and in turn at the fort (our next stop) where he died gazing wistfully at the Taj Majal (Majal means “chosen one” and was the name of his wife). It is known for its symmetry and elegance and even on Mom’s third visit she wasn’t impressed. We were aroused from our slumbers - which happened every ... read more

July 10, 2009 The karmic setting has commenced. We were both lucky enough to sneak on the extra kilo in our backpacks. Mom and I already set the first bet: who is going to start adopting the wiggly head bob that Indians so notoriously speak with, (for those of you who don't know what we're talking about, just imagine the dolls that ride on the dashboards of cars.) Who is going to start singing the bollywood songs and dancing the bollywood dances? We're on the airplane now and have tested our our neck pillows that we've luxuriously invested in for the 14 hour flight to Delhi. Although i did at the last moment realize that when i was taking out the notebook from the bottom of my bag i accidentally left out a flip flop, ... read more

This blog post is more than just a test to see how to upload pictures, where our blogs will be posted, and how to format our words, this blog post will to start with our emails to my dad from last summer when we traveled for a month in Vietnam and Cambodia: Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 10:04am 24 hours of screaming babies later and having soaked our clothes through with sweat my mom and i can safely say that we have begun to settle ourselves in Vietnam!! Well in Ha Noi at least. Though we can not say we are struck by the beauty, we are enchanted by the Asian exoticness there is to see. We arrived without trouble around ten to our hotel to stumble upon a introductory briefing by our tour guide Krista ... read more
